Item #: SCP-XXXX

Item Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept and monitored within site [REDACTED] and kept under Infrared CCTV surveillance by at least one class 3 researcher assigned to SCP-XXXX at all times. The headset must be kept inside a container made of Gamma-wave proof glass and should only be taken out under research conditions approved by staff with level 4 clearance or above.

Foundation personnel are not to be directly visually exposed to the light emitted by SCP-XXXX without adequate protective equipment, except under research and testing conditions, at which researchers must be wearing Class-A, Euclid-Level glasses that disallow the passing of any gamma waves until the specimen has been securely contained.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a VR headset of 10 cm by 30 cm. The object weighs exactly 607 grams. Inside the headset are two LED screens, capable of emitting 7000 to 8000 lumens. The outside of SCP-XXXX is covered in a layer of matte black plastic and bears many similarities to a VR headset known as the "Oculus Rift". However, it is to be noted that there is no oculus logo on the front of the headset.

The serial number on the headset does not match any number in the database of the manufacturer, ████, and is otherwise a perfect replica of the Oculus. However, the date of manufacturing and creator of SCP-XXXX is unknown and it is hoped that the answers will resurface with further research.

Testing of SCP-XXXX on D-Class personnel suggests that it has a form of anomalous mind-swapping ability, of which the origin is unknown. People who have been affected by SCP-XXXX become instances of SCP-XXXX-A and have consistently claimed to be the previous user of the headset.

Proper protective equipment must be used when within 5 meters of SCP-XXXX. Though viewing the light of the headset with proper protective gear (Gamma ray blocking visual protectors) is normally safe for the user, incidents have and may occur as the effects may still leak through slightly varied wavelengths that might pass through the glass. See Incident Log XXXX-53 for more information.

Fingerprints and dried sweat found on the surface of the object match that of [REDACTED], male, aged ██, referred to as SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-1 was reported as insane due to an extreme change in personality and mannerisms and was sent to ███████’s Hospital for the Mentally Ill on ██/██/20██, five and a half days after the reported purchase of SCP-XXXX from an unknown vendor. An with the guardian of SCP-XXXX-1 was conducted on ██/██/20██ (See Log XXXX-74).

Opening and examining the electronics of the headset reveal that the copper wiring within the specimen has been replaced with an unidentifiable compound. Despite this, the electric intake does not suggest any change in energy-use performance when compared to models that are commercially sold. Researchers have been to refrain from removing the material to allow for more testing to be done.

It has been found that the low-energy gamma waves emitted from the LED lights results in a low range of effect. Due to this, SCP-XXXX cannot affect users from more than 50 cm away.

Finally, it is to be noted that test subjects report a non-anomalous screen when looking directly at the headset. Though when viewed through Gamma wave-blocking glass, the screen appears to emit 5 to 10 lumens of light. The reason for this is unknown.

Recovery and History: The headset entered foundation custody on ██/██/20██ and arrived at site [DATA EXPUNGED] in a state of heavy disrepair. Examination into damaged sections of SCP-XXXX suggests that damage was sustained from a fall, and foundation engineers were able to repair the specimen to a less damaged state.

The foundation was alerted of SCP-XXXX's anomalous properties due to an unusual report of mental instability that occured in █████, USA.

The occurence regarded a male, aged [DATA EXPUNGED], who claimed to be a previous owner of the headset, becoming an instance of SCP-XXXX-A. The previous owner of the headset, male, aged ██, was found dead on the floor with SCP-XXXX attached to their face. It has been traced that the headset was then donated to a nearby store for selling by an unknown individual.

Addendum: Tests regarding D-Class personnel (D-XXXX-02, D-XXXX-06) were conducted on 28/10/20██ and ██/11/20██, one and ██ days after the retrieval of the headset and the first tests since the headset became foundation property. These tests were done to further understand the nature of SCP-XXXX. The recorded transcript of the test can be seen below.

Note: Test Log SCP-XXXX-24 was recorded on 28/10/20██, the first test after subject came under foundation custody.

Note: Incidence Log XXXX-53 was recorded on ██/11/20██, the second test after SCP-XXXX came under foundation custody.

Note: Interview was conducted on ██/11/20██, after the termination of all tests regarding SCP-XXXX from the 05-council.

Addendum-B: Due to the less that optimal outcome of Incidence XXXX-53, the 05-council has terminated further testing until informed otherwise.

Addendum-C: In light of Interview XXXX-74, SCP-XXXX-1 was brought from ███████’s Hospital for the Mentally Ill to site ██ for further interrogation. The log of the interview can be found below.
