Item #: SCP-4956
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4956 is to be kept inside a standardized safe surveyed by surveillance cameras at all times. The subject is to be kept under an object weighing approximately 3.5 kilograms. Any attempts to gain access to the SCP should be reported to site security immediately. Only personnel passing a psychological exam without any evidence of emotional distress can No experiments involving SCP-4956 are allowed following event 4956-4.
Description: SCP-4956 is an eleven sided Canadian $1 aureate coin. The lack of a date and other security features have led to the belief that the coin is counterfeit. It is unknown where the coin originated from, however, an analysis of the object has demonstrated that it was most likely manufactured in the early 2000s, and was in circulation before being acquired by the Foundation.
SCP-4956 has been classified as a dangerous anomalous object which has the ability to reverse the outcome of one event upon being tilted 180 degrees onto its opposite face. This effect was discovered by Dr. Micheal when flipping the coin in his personal residence while pondering the possibility of such an object existing. When reversed, SCP-4956 affects one past event having taken place within five minutes, ten minutes, one hour of its activation, changing the outcome of the selected event to its polar opposite. No details surrounding the modified outcome are changed, only the result of the main action or inaction. These changes are reflected in current time, creating a cascade effect in which the reversed outcome modifies any event dependent on that outcome. No subjects exhibit any knowledge of events before their modification by the item, except by those possessing an understanding of the anomaly, or suspecting its power over causality. The object views all events as having binominal outcomes, with events with multiple effects being simplified into individual actions. This process is performed with varying degrees of accuracy.
To clarify, the subject has the same effect as if it were to: rewind time, reverse the outcome of one action and then fast-forward back to the present.
Events modified by SCP-4956 seem to be selected on a random basis. However, the object does seem to modify events as specified by a human subject, if it receives auditory instructions preceded by the words “what if”.
Addendum 4956-1: Documented Uses of SCP-4956 by Foundation staff.
• User: Dr. Michael. Cause: Unknown. Effect: Unknown. Modified Outcome: Unknown.
• User: Dr. Shullman. Cause: Laboratory mouse was exposed to a controlled shock. Effect: The mouse entered cardiac arrest. Modified Outcome: The subject experienced no adverse effects.
• User: Dr. Lucas. Cause: D-0086 was injected with 0.10 milliliters of saline. Effect: Subject exhibited signs of emotional distress. Modified Outcome: The subject was neutralized within three minutes.
• User: [Data Expunged]. (See document below).
• User: [Data Expunged] Cause: [Data Expunged]. Effect: [Data Expunged]. Modified Outcome: [Data Expunged]. This staff member was highly reprimanded.
Addendum 4956-2: Event 4956-4.
Following an unprecedented containment breach of SCP-████, [Data Expunged] attempted to utilize SCP-4956 to return the subject to its enclosure. Upon retrieving the object, [Data Expunged] came into contact with SCP-████. [Data Expunged] activated the item, resulting in his neutralization. SCP-4956 was later found in its safe, and video evidence demonstrates that it was never removed.
Following this event, further experiments with the object provided increasingly more sporadic results, with the coin affecting causation beyond the initially hypothesized boundaries. It has been theorized that the object may possess intelligence. Experimentation involving the object was declared to be too hazardous and discontinued on the order of O5-█.
Addendum 4956-3: Petition regarding the use of SCP-4956.
We the undersigned staff of Site ██ believe that SCP should be utilized for the good of the Foundation, instead of being locked away from further discovery and experimentation. This tool has unlimited potential to further the interests of the organization, in order to continue to “Serve, Contain and Protect” the wider populace:
• By acting as a defense against the enemies of the Foundation.
• By preventing unnecessary loss of life during dangerous operations.
• By providing protection threats within foundation sites.
• By providing an increased understanding of temporal mechanics through experimentation.
Signed: [Data Expunged].
Following this petition, extra security was added to the containment of SCP-4956. All signatories were relocated to different sites.
