“Hypothetical Equilibrium”
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is currently contained in a tempered-glass cell for observational purposes. No personnel are to come into physical contact with it during its ‘weeping’ phase. No further actions are required.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a carved hardwood statue measuring three feet in height and one foot in width, weighing fifteen kilograms. It depicts the Virgin Mary standing against a cross with her arms spread, palms facing up.
At certain times SCP-XXXX leaks a red fluid from each of its eyes, appearing to weep. There has not of yet been any pattern established as to when this will occur, though tentative study suggests it may be tangentially linked to the lunar cycle. The liquid has been positively identified as human blood. Furthermore, the blood type has been identified as AB negative, present in 0.6% of the human population.
Two Class D personnel were assigned to place SCP-XXXX in containment. At this time, SCP-XXXX began a ‘weeping’ phase. The first of the Class D personnel retained a healthy level of eyesight, while the second was partially blind in both eyes due to a prior incident. When the first touched SCP-XXXX they cried out and reported a searing pain in their left eye. On inspection, their left eye had been removed in its entirety, down to halfway up the optic nerve, with surgical precision. Since the second Class D subject was nearly blind it was assumed that SCP-XXXX would not affect them as severely. Upon touching it, the second subject reported a similar pain, but in their right eye. They also claimed their sight had suddenly grown much clearer. Upon inspection, their right eye had also been removed, but their left had been replaced with the first subject’s.
Further tests confirmed that this effect only occurred during the ‘weeping’ phase.
SCP-XXXX was discovered in the possession of one Peter Deverell.
Deverell Interview
Interviewed: Peter Deverell
Interviewer: Dr Lynch
Foreword: This interview followed the apprehension of Peter Deverell and his transport to a secure site, upon which SCP-XXXX was removed from his possession and placed within its current containment.
Dr Lynch: How did you come by the statue?
Deverell: You promised immunity, right?
Dr Lynch: We will not inform the police if you cooperate.
Deverell: All right, all right. I, uh, found it in one of the country houses out in Derbyshire. I’ve been tracking it for years.
Dr Lynch: Tracking it?
Deverell: Yeah, it’s been all over the place. That’s what you want to know?
Dr Lynch: Go on.
Deverell: Well, it was carved at Iona Abbey in the 800s, stolen by the Vikings in the 800s, then it passed through a lot of different hands. Vlad III, Peter Stumpp, Thiess of Kaltenbrun, only to be sold off by a museum director with too many debts and the favourite saying “there's no problem a round of dice can't solve”. Shameful, innit?
Dr Lynch: Iona Abbey?
Deverell: Well, yeah, it’s called Our Lady of Iona. Classic weeping statue, isn’t it?
Dr Lynch: So it depicts the Virgin Mary?
Deverell: No, it’s not Mary.
Dr Lynch: But it was carved at an abbey?
Deverell: Did you think the Virgin herself came down to model for the monks? No, they based it off someone they saw right in front of them.
Dr Lynch: Someone?
Deverell: Something.
Dr Lynch: Let me be clear, your immunity depends on your cooperation.Deverell: Don’t you understand? Mary wasn’t the model. Mary, Mary, quite contrary. She hates a mess. She craves order. Pretty maids all in a row.
Afterword: Deverell refused to communicate further. The statements of his interview are being investigated, and the results of that investigation will inform any actions taken with regards to SCP-XXXX.
