Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4291 is to be contained within a secure glass lockbox located in the library of Site-81's D Wing.
SCP-4291 is not to be accessed by anyone without Level 3 Security Clearance as well as express permission from on-site administrative staff. Site-81's site directors and administrative personnel are to be formally warned of any testing of SCP-4291 in advance to prevent potential clerical errors. Identifying information regarding each test subject is also to be obtained prior to experimentation. These procedures are to be followed regardless of security clearance, and any who fail to follow them are to be formally reprimanded.
Furthermore, any and all readers affected by SCP-4291 infohazardous state are now to be designated SCP-4291-1 pending further reclassification.
(See Addendum-4291-A for further instruction.)
Description: SCP-4291 is a small, paperback book comprised of 250 initially blank pages and a design reminiscent of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series of books, sans cover art, which is replaced with a sheet of reflective foil. Despite appearing to have been printed and designed similarly to the aforementioned series, the cover references no author or publisher and is titled "Choose Your Biography! 5", a title that is not shared by any books published by Bantam Books1 or any known publishing house. As the title implies, SCP-4291 appears to be the fifth volume in a supposed series of books, and the collection of information regarding other instances of SCP-4291 is ongoing.
Upon opening SCP-4291 to it's first page, SCP-4291 will generate an interactive story with details collected from the memories of the subject reading it. This story will vary from reader to reader, but will always be presented in the first person, begin at ages 1-2, and end with a description of the reader's current condition. The story generated appears to always recount the reader's life perfectly, regardless of the choices the reader makes.
When SCP-4291 is opened, a passage will be generated at the first page describing the one of the reader's early memories and a set of choices to make, from there, the reader will be instructed to turn to one of two specific pages in accordance to their choice. This process will continue until the reader reaches an ending; a page which upon reading, the reader will become the version of themself described therein, and SCP-4291 will enter a short infohazardous state before becoming inactive.
In this infohazardous state, all personal recollection of SCP-4291-1's pre-ending self will be unknowingly forgotten and replaced with artificial recollections of SCP-4291-1's post-ending self. This effect is not currently reversible and is not lessened by any factors such as distance or intelligence.
Testing Logs
Obsolete testing logs for SCP-4291 have been declassified as they still provide some insight into its anomalous properties. ~O5-█.
Date: 7/15/2016
Subject: D-332
Brief Description: 20-year-old male, demonstrated a Foundation Intelligence Quotient of ██. Subject was instructed to prioritize choices that would further their education.
Result: SCP-4291 generated a 214 page story with a total of 143 choices made during the duration of the test. Following the experiment, D-332 was retested and displayed a Foundation Intelligence Quotient of ███ as well as a significant amount of knowledge pertaining to fields of Foundation research. Requests for D-332 to be allowed a position as a junior researcher have been approved.
As of Junior Researcher Dean Ambrose's employment, no further attempts to improve the FIQ or general skills of Foundation personnel are permitted without written permission from Dr. Jean Karlyle Aktus, especially not attempts to further one's status in the Foundation. ~Dr. Borley
Addendum SCP-4291-A: Following research into SCP-4291's anomalous properties, it should be noted that choices generated by SCP-4291 do indeed affect the subject's condition as well as recollections of said subject. Due to this, all experiments will require previously stated access and permission as well as the following:
- (1) Written account of the subject's life.
- A voice recorder, which is to be live for the full duration of the test.
- Any and all applicable medical records.
- In the case of the subject being D-class personnel, any and all applicable criminal records.
