Item #: SCP-5000
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: All instances of SCP-5000 are to be contained in a standard Foundation facility, with the exception of those that have been proven to be non-anomalous and have no further anomalous properties. Any new instances discovered must be destroyed or disposed of by the Foundation's Ethics Committee.
Description: SCP-5000 is an entity composed entirely of water, which has been classified as a "living organism" by the Ethics Committee due to its non-anomalous nature. In reality, however, it is not living, but rather an essence residing in water; this essence is what grants life to all things. By killing living things with water, a connection is made between the essence and the killer, allowing them to utilize all of its powers.
Being made of water, it can be divided into individual droplets, each with their own consciousness, and can reform the whole entity; this is how it can travel in water and through the air, as well as how it can survive anything. Its primary purpose is to traverse the globe and kill "wickedness", as defined by the Ethics Committee. When a person, place, or thing is listed as wicked, then the water essence will target them and bring them to justice.
Despite being classified as an "entity", it is actually more of a force of nature. It acts independently of any other forces, but is susceptible to alterations of reality to a limited degree. For example, if a person murders another in an altered reality, that killing will not be counted as "wickedness" by the essence, and it will not travel to that reality to bring justice. Instead, it will remain in its altered reality with their presence acting as a beacon to pull more wickedness towards them.
Traveling to other realities has proven to be an effective way of stopping the spread of the water-being, as long as the person doing the altering doesn't bring it into their own reality. Once it's in Foundation hands, reality alteration is no longer an option.
The water-being is non-violent by nature, but when provoked, it can easily destroy an area of several miles with just a few drops. Fortunately, it has proven incapable of doing this to the foundation.
The water-being seems to hold a fascination with the nature of pain and death, as well as the art of slaughter. Several of its entries in the journal contain poems and prose describing these subjects. It has also been seen altering the natural flow of rivers and lakes, seeing as it can pull people down to their untimely deaths. This is most likely without its direct control, however.
It has been written that if the right person could be found, an alliance with the water-being could bring forth fantastic powers. Unfortunately, due to the aggressive nature of the being, only a few individuals have had the required skill and luck to even meet it. Most who have attempted have tried to find a way to alter reality to gain its powers, only to fail and die horrific deaths.
Addendum: Journal Entries
The following are journal entries of past encounters with the water-being.
Journal - December 16, 2013 Entry 1: The month of January is nearly over, and the weather in this region of Canada has continued to be unusually warm for the time of year. It would seem that the water-being has been taking a break from its usual routines. Nevertheless, it has still managed to pull many people to their death this month. I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't possible that the death rate is the exact number of people the water-being was able to get a hold of this month. The deaths could just be "natural", but it's as if the being was deliberately letting people die. I've been keeping a list of all the people it managed to snatch away, and the very strange pattern I've noticed is that every single one of their deaths correspond with an increase in snowfall in the area. As if the water-being was creating more cold to go with it. We've had several close calls in the mines here, and it's almost been a blessing that our main prize, the spinal column of eye-333, was successfully thawed out of its cryoll pod in time. Still, we could have done without the two-day power outage that occurred shortly after the water-being went on a rampage through the mine. Luckily, nothing of any value was destroyed. I'm beginning to wonder if the water-being is actually a force of nature here. Perhaps it was dormant for so long because this area used to be so much colder. Once it started warming up, it returned. I wonder if it will stay around long after we've left this planet. Unlikely, but who knows? I suppose the best way to find out would be to ally with it.
Journal - January 18, 2014 Entry 2: The water-being has been attacking more aggressively since the first snowfall started. It's odd, but the attacks have seemed to intensify as the amount of snowfall has increased. It's almost as if it wants more of it. I've had a difficult time concentrating on work as I've had trouble sleeping due to the frequent attacks. Now that the water-being has gone into "breeding" mode, we need all the sleep we can get! I've been keeping a log of the attacks, and I believe I've found a pattern. The water-being comes out at night, and prefers to attack people as they sleep. It also favors digging its way into a room through the ceiling and dragging people down below ground. I've seen this first-hand when I was sleeping and was dragged down to the depths of the lake. The unfortunate part about that was I was woken up to the sight of a gigantic tentacle violating me. It took quite a bit of effort to get loose. After that, I only got my freedom by shooting the tentacle in the face and severing it at the base. As disgusting as it sounds, severing the tentacle did result in a great deal of blood being spilled, and that's when the rest of the crew came to my aid and attacked it with whatever they could find. It appears that the deeper we go into the mine, the more the water-being seems to lose its ability to harm us. It seems to have some sort of weakness against fire, so we've set off several explosions in the deeper reaches of the mine, but the attacks continue. The water-being must be going insane down there, and it's only getting worse. Today is a good example. We've been attacked several times today, and it doesn't seem to let up anytime soon. I hope this nightmare ends soon.
Entry 3: I can't take it anymore! The water-being is going to win this fight, and then what? We'll be at its mercy when it decides to come after us in greater force. We're going to have to try something else. The only other thing I can think of is to go back to the plan we had for the mine. The entrance is too small for it to escape from, even if it manages to chew through all of our defenses. We'll just have to seal it in. But that means going back underground, which is as terrifying for me as it is for everyone else. I know there's no going back from this, though. Everyone needs to be on board with this plan, or this is going to end very badly. I'll start gathering everyone immediately.
Entry 4: We're all in agreement that we need to go back to the original plan of digging through the mountain. This way is just madness. The water-being has been attacking us at an unprecedented rate, and none of our defenses have stopped it. I don't how much longer we can hold out. I just wish we could get some help from outside our community. As grateful as I am of everyone's support, we're all frightened for our future and this is a community decision. I hope we're making the right choice.
Entry 5: We're nearly finished digging through. I tried to keep morale up by playing music for everyone, which worked well until the digging began. Now the whole works has become a bit of a mine-rescue and defense center. We're finishing up now, though, and I can't wait to see this thing get sealed in. I just hope we don't get surrounded by the water-being in the process!
Entry 6: We're finished digging and that was the easy part. The water-being keeps chewing through our defenses and we're being overwhelmed by it in the process. I can't bear to look at what's happening outside, so I'm stuck in here with everyone else trying to seal the door. I just hope we get it done in time.
Entry 7: The door is nearly done. I'm surprised we're still alive, but then we're all doing our part. That's one thing we've never lacked. It's just a matter of sealing this door now and hopefully keeping the rest of the water from chewing through to us.
Entry 8: We're sealed in! It might not be the ideal solution, but the creature can't get in and we're all alive. I just hope this thing doesn't decide to leave like the old mine-smasher did.
Entry 9: I think we got it. The water-being has left the mine. Hooray! I'm really glad to be out of there. I don't like to think about what would've happened if we hadn't succeeded in sealing it in. I'm just glad to be out of there. Now we just have to hope that the water-being doesn't decide to come back later…
Entry 10: It's back. The water-being has somehow managed to get back into the mine. We're doing our best to seal it up again, but we haven't been able to do it yet. We're really going to have to try hard now.
Entry 11: We sealed it! The water-being can't get in anymore! We're all breathing a sigh of relief, I guess tonight we sleep well. Now we just have to decide what to do next.
Entry 12: The being is still out there. Despite our best efforts, it still managed to get in somehow. The seal only holds for so long, and who knows what will happen next.
Entry 13: The water-being is taking over. Something must be done but we're getting overrun as it is. I can't even find the strength to type anymore, The water-being has killed us all. Nothing can be done.
