Item #: SCP-3441

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3441 is held in a cubic

stone room with a single entrance, a wooden door. The dimensions

of the room are 12 feet by 12 feet. No security or intense

containment procedures have been deemed necessary by the

Foundation. Two security cameras are set in place at the upper

corners of the room.

Description: SCP-3441 is presumably humanoid in shape,

though no assumptions can be made of its actual appearance.

SCP-3441 will take on the physical appearance of a deceased

loved one, depending on who is viewing it. This visual

appearance is only evident through the eyes of the viewer, and

will be the loved one of fondest remembrance in the memory of

the viewer. Documented appearances have been typically those of

family members, most commonly mothers, fathers, and siblings,

but at times have been grandparents, cousins, and good friends.

An emotional attachment of an extendable degree is not required,

as some tests have shown SCP-3441 can appear as a celebrity or

admired official by those with distasteful personal pasts and

relationships. If viewed on a security camera, recorded piece of

media, or photograph, SCP-3441 will consistently appear as a

deceased person with emotional attachment to the viewer. A

picture of SCP-3441 is not provided due to potential loss of

human life.

First documentation of SCP-3441 occurred on February 3rd, 2013,

when the Foundation was contacted to investigate reports of an

indigenous native population in Nigeria under consistent

distress by a being referred to as "Mutuwar Matattu",

translating to "Demon of the Dead". Agents encountered SCP-3441

cornered inside of a small village house, however not detained

in any way. Several of the agents on site became distressed

immediately, and reported seeing an impassive form of their own

mother, father, sister, etc. A translator within the unit was

able to garner basic information from the natives, who claimed

to have found the creature wandering in a nearby patch of

jungle. One hunter apparently viewed it as its mother, and,

initially rejoicing, led it back to the village. SCP-3441 showed

no signs of resistance, and was led along easily merely by

pulling on its arm. It was at first perceived to be some sort of

gift from the gods, but was soon after seen as something

unnatural and dark. One of the villagers admitted to attempting

to stab SCP-3441 with a crude knife, but was not able to pierce

the skin. SCP-3441 apparently did not react in any hostile way.

Task force easily detained and brought SCP-3441 back to Site

[REDACTED] merely by pushing it along. It paced about slowly and

sporadically while held on the aircraft, choosing not to sit

down. It should be noted that all task force members during the

operation experienced great discomfort at viewing their deceased

loved ones for the remainder of the trip, and requested not to

be involved with SCP-3441 any longer. No special containment

procedures were required for SCP-3441, save for a locked door.

Testing on SCP-3441 proved inneffective in nearly every attempt.

Attempts to draw a blood sample were inneffective, as the needle

failed to pierce the skin. Photographs taken of SCP-3441 somehow

display the same visual effect viewed in physical form,

appearing as a deceased loved one with the strongest emotional

bond. SCP-3441 does not seem capable of intelligent

conversation, and does not respond to any questions asked or

things spoken to it.

SCP-3441 does not require food or sleep, and typically remains

active at all times of the day. Movements performed by SCP-3441

are considered to be casual, showing no signs of emotional

distress or concern for its containment. There is no pattern for

its movement. It has been seen pacing, sitting down, standing

up, crouching down, presumably wandering aimlessly. When SCP-

3441 is touched, and contact is prolonged, it will cease any and

all movement. A personnel-D individual was brought in for

testing of this, and did visibly embrace SCP-3441 for a period

of 20 seconds, producing no response from SCP-3441, failing to

move. SCP-3441 does have a regular pattern of blinking, which

occurs every 5.63 seconds, but has not been shown to breathe in

any way. SCP-3441 exudes warmth as a healthy human being would,

and appears to have a body temperature of 97.7 degrees

Fahrenheit, 36.5 degrees Celsius. SCP-3441's weight is

consistent at 68.04 kg, and somehow is able to keep consistent

physical volume and shape depending on who it is being viewed

by. Two researchers who touched SCP-3441's arm were viewing two

different people, one a petite female, the other a large male,

and yet both found physical resistance at the same spot to all

researchers viewing the test. It has been speculated that some

sort of visual hallucinitory effect aids in this. SCP-3441 has

appeared to be a varying number of different heights, but when

objectively measured, is always 6' tall. Invulnerabilty is

speculated, but has not been fully tested. One personnel-D

individual, distressed with whomever he was seeing, struck SCP-

3441 in the jaw with his fist. It should be noted that this

personnel-D was an inmate of considerable size and stature.

SCP-3441 remained unflinching, and the personnel-D individual

was later treated for a shattered hand and fractured wrist.

SCP-3441 showed no signs of hostility.

Upon a note of curiosity, Doctor [REDACTED] placed a request for

a specific personnel-D individual, a serial killer scheduled for

execution who suffered from significant psychopathy since birth,

to be introduced to SCP-3441 in an attempt to discern its actual

physical appearance. This request was accepted. Incident 1-A

occurred as follows, and was viewed on standard security camera

and audio recording devices.

Personnel-D individual, who will now be referred to as SCP-3441

-1, was asked to step into SCP-3441's containment cell. SCP-

3441-1 opened the door, entered the room, and shut the door

behind him. It should be noted that SCP-3441 was sitting in the

left corner of the room, with it's head facing the floor. Doctor

[REDACTED] instructed SCP-3441-1 to look closely at SCP-3441,

and describe what he saw. SCP-3441-1 turned to look at SCP-3441,

and immediately became incredibly distressed, whimpering in what

appeared to be overwhelming fear. SCP-3441-1 was asked again to

describe what was being viewed, but did not respond in any

coherent way. SCP-3441 turned it's head up to view SCP-3441-1,

its eyes becoming much wider than normal, and its normal pattern

of blinking ceased. All researchers viewing the incident

described SCP-3441's eyes to be filled with what appeared to be

"intent". Upon making eye contact, SCP-3441-1 screamed

profusely, and ran into the far right corner of the room,

slamming into the stone and cutting his own arms upon impact.

SCP-3441-1 curled up into a ball, and began to mutter incoherent

ramblings, shaking in apparent terror. SCP-3441 continued to

stare intently at SCP-3441-1, before saying in a monotone voice,

"look at me." This is the first documented occurence of SCP-3441

speaking. Researchers witnessing the event claimed that SCP-

3441's voice mimicked that of their own loved ones. Upon hearing

this command, SCP-3441-1 cried out in anguish, and began clawing

at his ears and eyes sporadically. After ten seconds of this

behavior, SCP-3441 repeated the command "look at me". SCP-3441-1

proceeded to scream violently, and 5 seconds after the second

command, died from a stress-induced heart attack. SCP-3441, upon

SCP-3441-1's death, immediately lost interest, and began to

resume its normal pattern of blinking, its eyes returning to

their normal state. SCP-3441-1 was removed from the containment

cell, and was disposed of without incident.

It should be noted that Doctor [REDACTED], who was present at

viewing the incident, has been in intense psychiatric care for a

current 3 months after the incident. Doctor [REDACTED] collapsed

during the incident, and has shown a great deal of mental stress

since. Doctor [REDACTED] has not been able, or is unwilling, to

speak of the incident, or anything, since. Investigation

revealed that Doctor [REDACTED] at one point had a strong

emotional attachment to his now-deceased grandfather, who was

mute since birth, and thus communicated through sign langauge.

It is presumed that Doctor [REDACTED] heard an unfiltered

version of SCP-3441's voice. Their family has been compensated

for this incident, and pictures as well as recordings of SCP-

3441 have been restricted from public viewing.

Addendum: Doctor Earnson has put in a formal request for

SCP-3441 to be introduced to SCP-682, in order to attempt to

discern it's true form, under the assumption that SCP-682 has no

love for any human being. This request has not yet been

approved.
