The monastery in which SCP-XXXX was first encountered

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX can not currently be contained.

Due to the infectious nature of SCP-XXXX, all SCP-XXXX-1 instances are to be kept in a Har-pa-khered Class Containment Vault.¹ Personnel are to avoid all contact with and observance of SCP-XXXX-1 instances. Observance of an SCP-XXXX-1 instance may result in classification as an additional instance.

Retrieval of SCP-XXXX-1 instances must be carried out via a double-blind operation by members of MTF Sigma-9 ("Elijah's Charioteers").² The retrieval team is to be equipped with partially occluded body camera systems and are to be directed by a coordinating team viewing the occluded footage. Upon retrieval the instance will be tranquilized and held in an HCCV.

Each HCCV can safely be utilized for the containment of five SCP-XXXX-1 instances through Eschaton Events. Upon the fifth occurrence of an Eschaton Event, the HCCV will be considered unusable.

Description:

SCP-XXXX is a Mi'raj-Bhakti Class Memetic Hazard.

SCP-XXXX has three phases of memetic infection, the Qoheleth phase, the Jehoahaz phase, and the Eschaton Event. Amnestics have not been shown to have any effect on the progression of SCP-XXXX.

During the Qoholeth Phase, those infected begin to experience vivid religiously themed hallucinations and an increase in the centrality and importance of religion. This increase continues³ until the infected enters a period of religious ecstasy at which point the Jehoahaz Phase will begin.

The Jehoahaz Phase is most clearly observed via an increase in the infected instance's Akiva radiation. The background Akiva radiation is drawn from the surrounding area via an unknown mechanism into the infected. After a short period of Akiva accumulation, the infected subject undergoes an Eschaton Event.

During an Eschaton Event, the infected subject combusts. It is notable that while heat and light are expelled from the infected. This is accompanied by a lack of audible or as of yet recordable sound within a varying radius of the event, whether this is an antimemetic component of the anomaly or anomalous physics remains unknown. It is presumed that this combustion is the built up Akiva radiation being converted into mundane energy and released from the infected in the form of light and heat. No remains of infected have been observed after an Eschaton Event, however clothing, equipment, and medical implements have been found, although badly damaged by heat.

Any persons who view an Eschaton Event or the preceding Jehoahaz Phase are to be considered SCP-XXXX-1 instances and contained immediately.

Foreword: Agent Ronald Chamberlain was the commander of the MTF originally assigned to recovery of SCP-XXXX in the Northeast of France.

Dr. Simmons: Your report says that they "exploded", can you elaborate on that?

Agent Chamberlain: I didn't see them myself, just the aftermath. Scorch marks, furniture tossed around the room. Ty saw it, he was in the room with one of them. But, he… You know, right?

Dr. Simmons: Yes, I know. We don't need to talk about that right now. You said that you saw the aftermath. That's a pretty small building, I expect that you should have been able to hear it.

Agent Chamberlain: That's the thing, we didn't hear it, we didn't hear anything. Everything went silent. Everything. I've been in that silent chamber at 17; that has nothing on this. Complete silence. He didn't want us to hear it.

Dr. Simmons: "He didn't want you to hear it?"

Agent Chamberlain: Yeah, I've been thinking about it a lot. It's like it was negative sound, somehow. He changed the rules.

Dr. Simmons: Who is "He"?

Agent Chamberlain: "He"? What are you talking about?

Dr. Simmons: You said, "He didn't want you to hear it." and then you said, "He changed the rules." Who is "He"? Who changed the rules?

Agent Chamberlain: He did.

Dr. Simmons: Who is "He"?

Agent Chamberlain: I- I don't know what you're talking about. I'm starting to feel pretty rough, here.

Dr. Simmons: Just a couple more questions, okay? After the… silence, what did you do?

Agent Chamberlain: Radioed the team. I got positives from everyone but Ty. I knew he was doing interviews with the captured GoIs, so I went over to the west wing.

Dr. Simmons: That's where you were holding them?

Agent Chamberlain: Yeah, only doors in the place that locked. Not that these guys were much into fighting, if I didn't know better I'd say they were drugged. So, I get to the hallway, and it's obvious which room it is immediately. Doors blown clean off the hinges. Smoke drifting into the hallway.

Dr. Simmons: Then you entered the room?

Agent Chamberlain: Yeah, I could feel Him there. When I got in the room, there were the scorch marks and all that. Ty was curled up in the corner, had hit the wall so hard he cracked the bricks. His clothes were half burned off, but he was fine. Fucking fine. Not a scratch, not a singe. You'd think hitting the wall like that would break his spine, his ribs, something.

Dr. Simmons: You examined him yourself?

Agent Chamberlain: On the scene, yeah. Enough to be sure he didn't have any heavy injuries.

Dr. Simmons: Okay, and what happened next?

Agent Chamberlain: The sound cut out again. Multiple times. I could feel the silence get heavier. Tangible somehow. His presence was palpable.

Dr. Simmons: These were from the other rooms?

Agent Chamberlain: Yeah, I went and checked as soon as I had Ty safe. Then I radioed the team and ordered an assembly in the courtyard.

Dr. Simmons: That's where you called for evac?

Agent Chamberlain: Yeah, I uh - I'm really not feeling good.

Dr. Simmons: Alright, let's continue this tomorrow, okay? Go get some rest.

Agent Chamberlain: Okay. He's watching, you know?

Dr. Simmons: Excuse me?

Agent Chamberlain: I'll see you tomorrow.

I've seen some messed up stuff. But I've never seen someone explode with the force of their own faith. And I know that's what it was. I could feel it flowing past me. Instinctively, the same way you can tell wet from dry. I could feel the faith in the air, then it entered him. And now there's so little faith here.

I've felt the others go as well. Less severe, but I was not in the room with them.

I haven't kept a journal in years. Habit I lost after seminary. The Foundation doesn't know that. I'm fucking ordained. Thought it was lucky that I'd get a religious artifacts MTF. It's like Indiana Jones, looking for the Holy Grail, although I hear we already have that.

Starting to see things. Like during the prayer fasts when I was a kid. Hovering just on the edge of my vision. Disappearing if I look too closely. I keep seeing leaves, red ones. That's different, maybe it's all the foliage here.

I saw Him today. The silence was incredible. It was heavy, like it was enveloping me.

I read my pocket Bible again today. Been a while for that one too. It helps with all the noise.

I think it's happening to me. The Initiative told us that the monks here had ascended, then The Initiative went, and they definitely had visions. Is this infectious? I'm sure the scientists know. I should ask them about that tomorrow.

It feels inappropriate to share this with anyone else. I'll just go through this on my own, it's probably better that way. If this is communicable, it's better if it happens to me here, away from the Site and everyone else involved.
