Chapter 1
Sometimes there’s no warning. It seemed like it happened yesterday, all of the panic, news channels reporting about the incident, and the people thinking it was all fake. And no wonder they thought it was fake, because there were many of these containment breaches, but most were false alarms, or some harmless creature trying to make an escape. Like that one time SCP-999 escaped but only made it through the front door.
He heard about the research on SCP-999, it was a blob of unknown orange stuff, but that SCP was probably the most friendliest SCP ever. The only thing that it cared about was making people happy and having fun. Tyler wished he could be with SCP-999 right now, he was very depressed
So again, everyone thought it was like that, but it wasn’t. Then in about 24 hours half of Chicago’s population got wiped. But his and some other families knew it wasn’t another false alarm, because the government never would say “evacuate to the nearest shelter” because those things are only used for when nukes are launched. But never on mini breaches have they ever said that. But if only they have nuked the site before the SCP’s started making a move towards Chicago, killing people at sight. Then maybe, just maybe, everyone would be safe, alive, happy. Maybe right now he is sleeping in his own bed, in his house, still summer break, no worries, no problems, and he’ll wake up and everything will be alright.
Tyler woke up, and looked around the room to see if everything was normal “Still the same…” he mumbled. He got out of bed and looked at his calendar, it was July, 18th, 2020. “Another day in hell” he said miserably.
He went to his closet and picked out some clothes. Most of his clothes were dark and dirty because bright shirts will make you very noticable. Even if they had electricity to wash their clothes, he wouldn’t clean them. He liked it dirty and smelly. He got dressed and walked towards the living room and watched were he was stepping, making sure he didn’t accidently put his foot on the piles of rubble in the room. He didn’t watch where he was stepping one time, then BOOM, his foot got cut open by a piece of concrete. Despite their attempts to clean it all up, it seemed like more kept on coming.
“Awake from your long sleep Ty?” said his younger sister Lilly, just as Tyler walked into the trashed kitchen.
“Yes, I’m awake” growled Tyler “Where’s Mom and Dad?”
“Mom and Dad left to scavenge for food, because we don’t have much left after you gobbled everything up yesterday, ever heard of rationing?”
“No idea what that is.” said Tyler trying not to giggle
“Well all we have is beans. So that’s our breakfast today.”
“Beans!?” Tyler yelled, disappointed “Why…?” Tyler has always hated beans since he was a preschooler, when his parents fed him them for the first time. He still remembers puking right after consuming it. But it’s eat, or starve, so he grabbed a can of beans and ate it, trying not to gag.
“And while you were sleeping,” said his sister “SCP-939 was passing by the apartment, and I have to put a pillow on top of your mouth so your obnoxious snoring wouldn’t alert it up here.”
“Maybe that’s why I was also dreaming about me suffocating in sand.” he said to Lilly.
But he did understand why she put a pillow to deafen his “snoring” because if SCP-939 hears you, you are pretty much dead meat.
“Even if he did hear us, we are pretty high up in this apartment, so he couldn’t get us. Right?” asked Tyler
“I don’t know but I’m not going to be the one to see if it can,” said Lilly.
Tyler and his family lived in a big apartment on the 10th floor, because the very top part of the apartment got burned. Their apartment floor has piles of rubble everywhere, some holes in the floor, and burned furniture. But every floor they explored below theirs’ was pretty much the same or worse. So they chose the highest one to be safe.
“When do you think Mom and Dad will come back? Asked Tyler
“Well every time they go scavenging it takes about 30 minutes, 24 seconds, but since the wind speed is around 25 mph, and temperature 25°F I’d say in about 32 minutes, and 35 seconds.” said Lilly doing the math in her head. “Wait, actually 32 seconds. I forgot to carry the 2.”
“Why are you such a nerd, all I want is like an estimation of the time, like in minutes. Not in that way that makes my head hurt.” said Tyler, annoyed.
Lilly said angrily, “Maybe if you were a straight A student like me, you would understand.”
“Well at least I’m strong and not such a smart-ass!”
Tyler and Lilly always had fights like these, they never got along. And at this point both siblings were done eating their beans and went to their own rooms. Tyler stormed to his room and slammed the door. Lilly did the same.
Tyler plopped onto his bed, and stared at the ceiling. He sighed, and a moment after he heard a shriek outside the apartment, he looked out his window and saw two people, who looked about their age, with SCP-939 a few meters away from them, “LILLY!” No response. So Tyler went running straight to Lilly’s room. Pounding on the door Tyler yelled,
“Lilly open up!
“Why, was that you screaming?”
“No, but that was two people getting attacked by SCP-939!”
“Mhm, I’m definitely going to believe that. Just leave me alone”
“Trust me, look out your window!”
So Lilly did what she was told and also screamed
“LET’S GO NOW!”
“Shouldn’t we hide!?”
“NO!”
And at that time Lilly was running out of the room, yelling at Tyler
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier!?
“I just went to my room and saw 2 people like 10 meters away from SCP-939”
“Then let’s go help them!”
Tyler stopped.
“What if we get killed?”
Lilly thought for a second,
“If we get killed, at least we’ll die brave.”
“Very inspirational,” Tyler rolled his eyes.
Tyler and Lilly started running towards the door, putting their shoes on as fast as possible, not caring that it wasn’t even on correctly. They sped through the door, and went down the stairway towards the ground.
While sprinting down the stairs Tyler said to Lilly
“How are we even going to help them?”
“Oh crap, I never thought of that … We’ll figure it out.”
A few seconds later they finally reached the ground.
Tyler peeked over the side of the door frame, he saw 939, but not the people.
“Where are they?” Lilly whispered
And at the moment, 939 started going forward, they saw 2 dead bodies. Tyler just stared, and Lilly just cried a little. 939 started crawling towards to the next street. When the coast was clear, both siblings ran towards the bodies. But the bodies weren’t people, they were dummies
“Wait, these aren’t real people.” said Lilly, confused
“Dang, I wanted to see some blood.”
Lilly gave Tyler a cold stare, “what?” asked Tyler
“No wonder why 939 didn’t wait long to feast, they’re just dummies. But I also saw moving figures that didn’t look like these.”
Lilly studied the figures, and remembered something,
“Wait aren't these the dummies that the SCP Foundation use to test SCP-939?”
“I thought they just used poor D-Class”
“Well they didn’t.” Said Lilly, “let’s bring them home”
Lilly brang the dummies with, Tyler asked why but Lilly just ignored him.
“Can we have lunch?” Asked Tyler
“You already ate up all of the rationing that was supposed to be R-A-T-I-O-N-E-D for the whole day, so no lunch OR dinner for you today.”
“Stupid rationing…” Tyler mumbled
Once they got back to their apartment floor Lilly put the dummies in her room next to her DNA Extraction set. Tyler was still enraged about the food rationing thing. So he didn’t say a word and just went to his room, while secretly taking a snack from the cupboard. Lilly grabbed her little “fingerprint finder” that she got for her birthday, and started brushing the dummies. After 10 minutes, she found a few fingerprints, but since she wasn’t the FBI and knew everyone's fingerprint, she grabbed some DNA extraction. It was hard to get it out, and even harder to find who was the carrier of the DNA.
The next day Lilly is back up trying to discover the person that put those dummies there. She stood up late, but passed out and now her face is smeared of DNA extraction liquid. She woke up and did her morning business. Tyler was eating breakfast by now, forgetting to ration—- again, and when she walked in Tyler hid the substantial amount of stale cheerios behind his back. He then put a small plate of beans in front of him and said,
“Good morning.”
“Do you think I’m dumb, I saw that bowl of cereal.”
Tyler then put the cereal back in front of him, and ate it sloppily and swift.
“So *crunch*, what did you *smack* did you find about *munch* those mannequins *om nom nom.*
“Well I *imitating those noises* found out *imitate* that you *imitate* should not talk *imitate* with your mouth *imitate* full of food *loud, obnoxious fake crunch*.
“Sorry,” said Tyler politely
“Well I found out that the people were about our age, and
there was one male and female.”
“Interesting, so there are more survivors?”
“What do you expect, that everyone died? Of course there are more survivors. But we should find them, there’s more safety in numbers.”
“So how do we find them, we need to wait for mom and dad, and to stay safe.”
“We put the dummies back where they were and they should come back to get them back. We wait up here and look out the window.”
“Okay, that works. I guess.” said Tyler, unsure.
Chapter 2
“Lilly I see them!” Yelled Tyler “Let’s go now!”
Lilly and Tyler were all ready, and ran to the bottom level. Lilly was excited to see more humans other than his brother, and parents. The two kids were right by the dummies ready to pick it up and leave, but then Lilly yelled “Wait!”
The kids jumped, and were about to dash away. But once they saw that it was other kids they calmed down. The boy was 5’2”, wearing a black shirt with large white text saying “Give Me Space” with an astronaut’s helmet below it. He looked lazy and was a bit obese.
On the other hand, the girl looked nothing like a girl. She was about 5’8”, wearing a tank-top, and was pretty muscular. She had a tough look on her face, unlike her brother who was kind of scared
“Who are you?” asked the boy
“Uhhhhh, we are kids like you?” said Tyler
“What’s your names? Mines Erik. Her’s Erika”
“Wow, that’s pretty similar names.” said Tyler
“Please don’t talk about it, it’s embarrassing to have my brother’s name like mine,” said Erika, frustrated
“Embarrassing for you, it’s even more embarrassing for me!”
“Shut up dweeb!”
“How about both of you shut up! Do we want to attract any SCPs here?”
Then everything was silent. “Good point” said Erik, “now first, what’s your guy’s names?”
“My name is Tyler, and she’s Lilly.”
“And just to warn you guys, my brother is soooo annoying,”
“Mine to!” said Erika. The girls high-fived each other.
“So, what do you guys do??”
“Well we are nomads, we don’t really stay in one place.”
“Then let’s go to our place, which is right in front of you.”
So they went up to their apartment and showed them around, Tyler showed Erik his room, and Lilly showed Erika. Tyler showed him around, and then showed him his secret stash. Erik was impressed by all of the things Tyler stored in his closet that Lilly of course doesn’t know about. There’s lots of food, mostly chips and cookies, things you would find in vending machines. Then there was pocket knives, bb guns, bb gun ammo, his dead phone, another secret stash of food, and a lighter. Then last but not least all of his clothes on top of it to hide it. Erik asked why he hid them, since those things could be very useful for their survival.
“Well then my parents will know that I had these before this apocalypse, and then I’ll either get 1.grounded 2.punished 3.punished and grounded or 4.eaten.”
“Why would your family eat you?”
“Just forget I ever said that.”
“Okay.” Said Erik
“And if we ever get in danger, I could bring these weapons out, and save our lives.”
“That’s a pretty good idea, but can you give us one of your pocket knives, mines broken.”
“That’s fine, take this one.”
Tyler then tossed Erik one of his camo knifes and they chatted away. While in Lilly’s room Erika wasn’t really impressed and Lilly was getting frustrated. The reason why Erika wasn’t impressed is because she thought that knowledge isn't power, but strength and survival skills. They were arguing about which was the best thing for survival, and got in a fight. Of course Erika won, and teased Lilly. Just before Erika was going to give Lilly a knuckle sandwich to the head, Tyler and Erik walked in.
“Erika, please put Tyler’s sister down. They invited us here.”
“But first, what do you think is better in survival. Knowledge or strength and survival skills?” Asked Erika, angrily
“They are both the key to survival, so please put her down already!”
“Wimp…” Erika said to herself
“Say for yourself.” Said Lilly
“GUYS JUST STOP!” Yelled Tyler
Everyone paused, and everyone stopped fighting. The rest of their stay wasn’t the best, but wasn’t the worst. The girls were still mad at each other, and they showed it greatly. At dinnertime they didn’t even say a word, or even looked at each other. While the boys were doing way better than them. They were chatting away about video games, sports, their old crushes, and other things.
A few hours later everyone was sleeping. Erika on the couch, Lilly in her room, and Tyler and Erik in Tyler’s room. They were having a pillow fight, and Tyler won. Then they played on Erik’s little arcade machine, and then went to sleep. But Tyler felt something was missing, but he didn’t know what it was. He twisted and turned, trying to sleep, but it was just too hard. Then he had enough of it and went to the kitchen for a glass of water. He grabbed a plastic water bottle and got a cup, which said “Chicago, Illinois, The Place to be!” He thought about what it said and said to himself,
“If only they knew what was going to happen.”
He dragged himself back to bed and went to sleep.
“Humans,” said the figure, “must be stopped.”
Another figure in the shape of a box said
“Yes.”
“This pestilence that they have must be stopped or we will all die. It causes corruption, pollution, and death.” “My cure is the most effective, but not perfected.”
“Yes, but it is the best of any.” said the box
“How many humans are by us?”
“scanning… *pause* … 2 life forms detected… 256 meters away.”
“Thank you 079 for your help.”
“It was my pleasure, Plague Doctor.”
Then the Plague Doctor went on his way to test his cure on those two unfortunate people.
“I wonder how our kids are doing at home,” said a lady
“Tyler probably ate the whole cupboard by now, thank god we found all this food in that supermarket,” said a man pushing a cart full of supplies.
“Also thank god the only SCP we ran into was SCP 131, I didn’t even know there were SCPs that gentle.”
“Lilly would of loved them, we should've bring one home.”
“Wouldn’t their family get pissed and attack?” said Tyler’s dad a bit anxious. “Even though they’re nice they could just be trying to trick us so they could eat us.”
“Well, I guess we’ll never know, unless we find some more documents about them.”
The couple walked down the mutilated road until they saw some figure standing by the house in front of them. The couple were puzzled by the figure and the man shouted,
“Hello? Who are you?”
“I’m the Plague Doctor, and I’m here to test my cure on you.”
“Sooo, your a doctor?” asked Tyler’s mom, baffled
“I am a doctor, and I’m here to cure your deadly disease.”
The couple looked at each other then looked back at the Plague Doctor, who started walking towards them.
“B-back off!” yelled Tyler’s dad
“I cannot back away from my duty sir.” said the doctor
At this point the couple were sprinting away, not knowing what had just happened. They ran for as long as they could, as far away from the Plague Doctor as possible. A few minutes later they stopped.
“Who the hell was that?” Asked Tyler’s mom
“I don’t know, aren’t you a level 3 researcher?”
“Yes, but we just got that thing a month before the breach!”
Tylers and Lilly’s mom worked at Site 19 before the breach happened. She was level 3 clearance and was one of the best researchers, always getting higher clearance each year. She knew every SCP that were on her clearance by heart, and always treated her D-Class amiably. Even though they weren't supposed to tell anyone about their top secret research, she always told her children and husband about the SCPs she researched and what new drama happened. But they never told anyone else since doing so would turn them all into D-Class.
They started walking which seemed like forever, including that Tyler’s dad forgot the cart of supplies when they ran away from SCP-049. They reached their apartment a few hours later, out of breath.
“I wonder what they did while we were away.” said Tyler’s mom
“I guess we’ll find out once we get up there.”
The parents entered their apartment to seeing a trashed living room with Lilly and another girl yelling at each other, to Tyler and another boy feasting on all of the leftovers.
Tyler’s mom yelled “EVERYBODY FREEZE!”
The kids paused and stared at the woman.
“Mom!” screamed Lilly
“Who is that?” said Erik
While Lilly was running to her mom to hug her, she asked her
“Who are these people?”
Tyler and Lilly explained to them how they met, and what happened while they were gone. Erik and Erika introduced themselves to Lilly’s and Tyler’s parents. They were suspicious at first since they have never seen them before, but started to like them. It was about dinner time and Tyler’s mom started making some cold canned soup for the kids. Tyler’s mom talked all afternoon about her stories about being a researcher.
“Have you researched SCP-939?” asked Erik
“Yes I have, they are a very interesting species, why did you ask.”
