Tower of Echoes

Item #: SCP-5678

Object Class: Safe

Threat Level: Green (Blue pending further investigation)

Special Containment Procedures: A perimeter 10 meters from SCP-5678, comprised of a 3.5-metre-high chain link fence, topped with scaling deterrents in the form of barbed wire and accessible via a single locked gate, is to be continually patrolled by precisely four armed guards on a four-hour rotation. No other personnel are authorised to enter this perimeter. Precisely four D-class subjects are kept on-site and may be allowed to pass beyond the fence and enter SCP-5678 for experimental purposes on approval from Dr Darnham. Complete medical records of all personnel - including DNA, retinal signature, and fingerprints, as well as thorough psychological profiles - are to be securely kept on-site, as are detailed life histories available only to Level 2 personnel or above. These records are to be kept continually up-to-date.

Upon completion of their rotation, all guards are to be thoroughly examined, including retinal scans, fingerprint analysis, and psychological evaluation. If a number of returning guards greater than four is noted, no overt action is to be taken until completion of these tests, though all personnel including the guards are to be prepared for containment procedures. Any individuals whose results do not match any on-site personnel records are to be classified as instances of SCP-5678-A, at which point they shall be documented, catalogued, and/or immediately detained at the discretion of Dr Darnham. No instance of SCP-5678-A is to be allowed to leave the site and any possessions found upon SCP-5678-A instances are to be stored, catalogued, and examined for age, weight, and material composition at Site-45. Relevant manufacturers are to be contacted with inquiries regarding any objects with serial numbers or similar identifying marks. Any anomalous items with resemblance to equipment or possessions of on-site staff are to be compared with their genuine equivalents according to these procedures and reclassified as instances of SCP-5678-B.

Description: SCP-5678 is an abandoned 20-storey residential building called [REDACTED] Towers, built in 198█ and located in the [REDACTED] town of [REDACTED], United Kingdom. The circumstances of its construction, previous habitation, and subsequent abandonment have no currently known association with its anomalous properties. According to local government records it was scheduled for demolition in 199█ and all former residents were successfully rehoused, but the demolition project was never completed due to budgetary reasons, and the structure simply fell into disuse. SCP-5678 was first brought to the attention of the Foundation when a group of ██ university students, aged between 23 and 27, broke into the building for recreational purposes in 201█. They soon informed local authorities that they could hear signs of numerous other people inside, mostly describing footsteps and muffled speech on higher floors and within unentered rooms. Unnerved, and suspecting the presence of potentially dangerous homeless squatters or gang activity, the group had quickly exited the building.

Interviews with members of this group, all of whom were administered Class B amnestics once interviews were concluded, confirm that an individual exited SCP-5678 anlong side the group who was completely unfamiliar and who had not entered the building with them to their combined knowledge. This individual, a humanoid male classed as SCP-5678-A1, nonetheless demonstrated at least cursory knowledge of each other individual, even being able to recount accurate and intimate details surrounding several of them. It was able to describe in depth its purported relationships and experiences with members of the group, ranging from acquaintances, friendships, past and current rivalries, and romantic relationships. However, it vehemently denied knowledge of [REDACTED], similar to the way every other student denied knowledge of it, and grew visibly distressed when speaking or being told about him, claiming repeatedly that he was ‘not real’.

To date SCP-5678-A1 is the only known living instance of SCP-5678-A, all other documented instances having been terminated by the Foundation. It is currently contained at Site-88, where interviews are ongoing. For a selection of details from these interviews, see Interview-5678.

Addendum-5678-1: The anomalous properties used to apparently create SCP-5678-A1 have been used in experimentation several times since original discovery (see Exploration-5678-A). Like SCP-5678-A1, all anomalous humanoids created by this phenomenon appear to be ordinary humans, complete with memories of past experiences and with current relationships, particularly to individuals within the group.

All individual SCP-5678-A instances have been found to appear to be real people. The described events involving them are fictitious, though internally consistent and generally credible considering the personalities and life circumstances of the individuals concerned. SCP-5678-A instances also demonstrate distinct personalities, including mundane preferences and dislikes, various religious and political beliefs, and different emotional tendencies and psychological profiles. These characteristics are consistent with their stated backgrounds, upbringings, and life experiences.

As the few intentionally created SCP-5678-A instances have resulted from experiments involving D-class subjects, they have almost all reported criminal records, which are often lengthy and include such offences as armed robbery, assault, sexual assault, and murder. These reported events correspond to no recorded crimes. Such instances who do not report such records are universally found to be deliberately lying.

Addendum-5678-2: SCP-5678 does not limit its effects to human subjects. One researcher, after attaining Z-Epsolin Level clearance, guided a long haired tortoise shell house cat through the doors of SCP-5678. After 4 hours and thirty minutes it was coaxed back to the entrance with positive reinforcement. ██ SCP-5678-As returned alongside the original subject, all of which have been relocated for study.

Instances of SCP-5678-A have been shown to possess no knowledge of their irregularity. Each studied instance of SCP-5678-A seems to possess knowledge of not only its current mission objectives but also the objectives of prior missions that it had been involved with. When given clear physical evidence of its false existence it simply [REDACTED].
