Traitor By Annie Williams

In those waking dreams
or half lucid reading
of pages which flowed
through my visions
lassos lashed out
catching axons and slowly
so slowly that often the moment passed
synapses and receptors
union of some
seemingly defunct past and struggled
to find some sensible place
in a narrative mysteriously revised
by an outside influence

quasi poetic imagery
augmented images
danced in and out of view as selections
from a collection of photo albums
logos symbols landscapes paintings
with so many
words and meaningful references
unfamiliar allusions
all flowing by
for all to see

alarmed by an image
of my distant past self
face obscured by unusual editing
with a childrens book
about a biblical character
pasted in a tree
a figurine of a cartoon
with glasses and a book
in hand free-floating

memory is funny
so maybe it was unclear
maybe memory or merely
reminding me of similar things
so much familiarity even in what
I had never previously seen
an odd colloid of immiscibility
featuring frustration and shadows
shadows for shadow's sake
as well as shadows of murky things
I couldn't see clearly
desire, derision, care, hurt
warnings, invitations, instructions,
words invoked sight and a little sight
slowly came along
but so slow

were it not for my trepidation
I would have saved a facsimile to study
or even asked more directly for meaning
something felt strange and dangerous
like the photo of the sandpainting
a ritual for healing
an image meant to be returned to the earth
once it's part in the ceremony is complete

the sum of my knowledge is
infinitesimal in the grand scheme
I could have been bolder but the risk
felt incalculable
which could have merely been timing
compounded by my mind's overactivity
concerning things which I don't understand

The book was the size of a paperback she'd buy at an airport but had to weigh fifty pounds. She plopped down at the desk and began to sketch on the paper, explaining as she drew. Finished. As she shut the drawer, the envelopes on the top of the desk caught her attention. Invitation in bold stamped on the top one. Perhaps answers will be told if she returned.
