Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be quarantined from all sides by organometallic walls, spanning 2x2 kilometers in diameter with a height of 20 meters. All buildings must remain inside the wall, preferably not adjacent to it. Any civilians inside the wall under the effect of SCP-XXXX are to be ignored unless they show signs of basic cognition and response, and if the time required to retrieve them is less than 20 minutes. Foundation guards positioned at 8 entry stations around the wall are to prevent any humans from entering with verbal cover-ups as to why the wall was built, and with physical force if needed.
Individuals retrieved affected by SCP-XXXX are to be examined for neuron loss and possible mental issues arising from prolonged exposure to SCP-XXXX, provided they do not die after being taken out of SCP-XXXX. Upon recovery, those individuals are to be administered Class-A amnestics and sent away.
In the case SCP-XXXX experiences a sudden vast expansion in size, civilians close to the wall at possible risk of exposure to SCP-XXXX are to be evacuated until it is safe. However, these civilians should be ideally relocated to another farther location.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an unidentified, very translucent brownish-orange gas with a current diameter of ███ meters, located in United States, Texas in the city of ███████. SCP-XXXX is extremely cohesive unlike other gases, causing it to appear as one large mist that does not diffuse outwards and lose density over time.
A snapshot of a region inside SCP-XXXX. A faint brown atmospheric tint is visible.
SCP-XXXX contracts and expands randomly, but can range from a size of a couple of meters up to 1800 meters, although the maximum limit can be bypassed and modified at unknown times. This process of altering size is completely random and unpredictable.
SCP-XXXX induces several effects on exposed materials. Inorganic substances touching SCP-XXXX will slowly corrode over time, regardless of durability or resistance to corrosion, with a percentage mass loss of approximately █% a year. Organic substances however are immune to this corrosion effect, instead, the effects caused by SCP-XXXX are described in document XXXX.
Any humans exposed to SCP-XXXX undergo various mental effects over time. These effects will only manifest if they are present in the gas for 20 minutes or longer, allowing safe traversal of SCP-XXXX within that time limit. This effect has not been observed on any living beings other than humans, regardless of their sentience or level of cognition. SCP-XXXX causes euphoric feelings in those affected by it, akin to the usage of common drugs that stimulate the release of happiness-stimulating endorphins in the brain. As the person spends more time in SCP-XXXX, this feeling intensifies but eventually halts its intensification after around 40 minutes. SCP-XXXX causes a rapid and unexplained death of neurons in the brain as long as the subject experiences those euphoric effects, which can leave various mental deficiencies if the subject is retrieved alive. The following effects typically happen after exposure to SCP-XXXX:
- After nearly 25 minutes, the subject experiences blurry vision and reduced hearing
- After nearly 50 minutes, all feelings of fatigue in the subject subside abruptly
- After nearly 80 minutes, subject may lose feeling in extremities of their body
- After nearly 120 minutes, the subject may enter a vegetative, sleep-walking state where all higher brain functions have ceased. Civilians who have reached this state have been reported wandering the streets and homes enveloped by SCP-XXXX without a clear direction or aim, and do not respond to external stimuli.
These effects may be associated with the deterioration of neurons in the brain that SCP-XXXX causes, which can reach 80% neuron loss. Subjects that have reached the described final stage anomalously do not die of natural bodily causes, such as starvation, and their hearts and lungs continue to operate normally despite the lack of signals from the brain. All organs and tissues in these subjects do not decay despite their possible prolonged exposure to decomposers in the environment. However, death of these vegetative subjects is still possible by physical means if they manage to injure themselves heavily while wandering.
If a subject in the final stage is forcibly removed from SCP-XXXX and introduced back to the normal atmosphere, they will be immediately rendered unconscious and die within an hour as their heart and lungs cease to work and their brain is starved from oxygen. All body-preserving effects caused by SCP-XXXX are undone as well. Subjects removed from SCP-XXXX before reaching the final stage are rendered unconscious as well but have a mortality rate of ██%, and often report memory loss, possible paralysis, schizophrenia or other mental disorders depending on how many neurons have died as the subject remained within SCP-XXXX.
Brain scans of affected subjects interestingly show that SCP-XXXX not only deteoriorates neurons, but also restructures the connections between them in the brain. Subjects report the creation of false memories, or the modification of existing ones due to this restructuring. In special cases, mental disorders the subject previously had can be reversed due to it, although this is extremely rare, and does not necessarily mean that any disorders SCP-XXXX can form will be reversed.
