Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a standard anomalous entity storage room. Access to this object is restricted to personnel with a Security Clearance Level 2 or higher and testing is only permitted for personnel with a Security Clearance Level 3 or higher approved by Senior Researcher Alex ████. Due to its memetic effect, testing is to be carried out in a sound-proof room. Subjects affected by the Alpha-level memetic hazard (see ADDENDUM XXXX-A) are to be given class-A amnestics, while subjects affected by the Beta-level memetic hazard (see ADDENDUM XXXX-ß) are to be terminated.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a white 3rd generation iPod distributed by Apple Inc. in the year 2003. Along with it, there is a pair of Apple brand earphones. Tests show that they cannot be removed.

The anomalous effects aren't observable until it's turned on, the earphones are put on and the only available option "Your favorite song" is selected. After this is done, the subject's favorite song will proceed to play. After the whole song is played and the device is turned off, subjects report feeling happy and relaxed.
If XXXX is not turned off, it repeats the song in a volume 10 decibels higher than before. This causes an Alpha-Class memetic hazard, that makes the user not want to stop listening to the song despite the discomfort caused by the high volume. This can be stopped when another person turns the device off. The affected individual will start acting aggressively towards them, though this does not always lead to physical violence. This effect can be nullified by applying A-class amnestics.
After listening to a song 4 or more times, a Beta-Class memetic hazard will occur, which puts the subject in a trans-like state, completely unresponsive to any outside sounds or even physical harm. The volume at this point reaches 150 decibels, which causes permanent eardrum damage. At this point, the song is audible to people near the affected individual, it does not cause any anomalous effects in them. When the song is paused the subject will turn extremely violent, lashing out and attempting to [DATA EXPUNGED] the person who stopped the song. As of right now, there are no ways to revert the damage caused by a Beta-Class memetic hazard.

This object was discovered on 23/05/20██ in a neighborhood in downtown London. Civilians reported to the local authorities that "the guy from the house across the street was playing "Highway to Hell" extremely loudly. When the police went inside the building, they found Andrew ██████ , the owner of the house, sitting in his chair with SCP-XXXX in his hand. Even though the earphones were in his ears, officers reported the volume was similar to club speakers. He wasn't responsive to any commands directed by him, and when one of the officers took SCP-XXXX and turned it off, the subject attacked them, killing 1 police officer and injuring 3 before he was terminated. Agent Timothy ████ was dispatched to seize SCP-XXXX and all of the individuals present were given A-class amnestics.

ADDENDUM XXXX-A
Testing of the Alpha-Class memetic effects of SCP-XXXX

Subject: D-9814, Caucasian male, 32 years old, convicted of murder.

Procedure: D-9814 was placed in a soundproof room with SCP-XXXX inside with a Site Guard assisting him. Researcher █████ ordered the subject via a computer screen inside the room to put the earphones on and select "Your favorite song" on the device. D-9814 said the song playing was "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics, which the Site Guard reported via a shortwave radio. After 7:08 minutes, equal to the song being played 2 times, the site guard was ordered to instruct D-9814 to turn the song off. He refused, even though he was held at gunpoint. Then the Site Guard was ordered to turn the device off. This resulted in D-9814 becoming hostile to the site guard, but this did not escalate to violence. The Subject was escorted out of the testing room and Class-A amnestics were administered.

ADDENDUM XXXX-ß
Testing of the Beta-Class memetic effects of SCP-XXXX

Subject: D-9852, Hispanic male, 25 years old, convicted of several armed robberies

Procedure: The procedure was carried out the same way as with the previous test, however the Guard was equipped with earplugs. It was reported that "Jesus Walks" was playing. After 12:56 minutes, equal to the song playing 4 times, the Guard was ordered via a computer screen to turn the music off. This resulted in the subject turning towards the site guard and attacking him in a rage-state. The subject continued on with the attack even after receiving a shot to the knee from an HK UMP 45. Another Guard was deployed to the room and terminated D-9852. The first Guard received minor injuries to his arms and was treated accordingly.
