Tab 2: Bed of Nails
Tab 3: Haunted House
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures: Due to high demand, shipment of SCP-XXXX must be arranged and negotiated with the Foundation Logistics Committee. [will expand on this]
Description: In its original form, SCP-XXXX took the form of a traditional ‘bed of nails’, a 150x80x20cm oblong wooden board with many metal spikes protruding from its surface. The object differed from a traditional bed of nails in that it only featured one 10cm long nail slightly left of its centre; despite this, the object performed the same functions as a bed of nails would, allowing users to rest comfortably on its singular nail regardless of their position upon the nail. The object allowed its users to negate the normal effects of uneven distribution of weight, centre of mass and gravity deviating from support, and physical wear-and-tear upon the individual nail.
SCP-XXXX was recovered from a street magician in Prague, Czechoslovakia, after reports surfaced of local citizens becoming aware of the anomalous properties of the object; it was restrained and placed into Foundation custody shortly afterwards. The initial response by Foundation personnel to the recovery of SCP-XXXX was that of mild amusement; the object was initially denied SCP classification due to its apparently surface-level anomaly, and it was subsequently submitted to the Log of Anomalous Items as such:
Item Description: An object superficially resembling a traditional ‘bed of nails’, but with only one nail; despite this, object essentially functions as a regular bed of nails, allowing users to lie comfortably on its surface.
Date of Recovery: 16-03-1988
Location of Recovery: Prague, Czechoslovakia
Current Status: Kept in the Site-31 break room.
Notes: I can confirm that naps taken on this object are indeed very cozy. - Dr. Sloane
The widespread potential application of SCP-XXXX’s anomalous properties were only realised around 3 years after initial containment, after Incident XXXX-1 in which Junior Researcher ███ Twomey accidentally shattered the object in two after an accident in the Site-31 break room, separating the nail from the board and fracturing both the board and the nail in several places. Initially, the response of fellow Researchers was to reprimand Twomey and to use the wood of the backboard to kindle the break room’s fireplace.
Upon breaking the object, however, Researcher Twomey found that the nail of SCP-XXXX retained the anomalous properties of the object even when isolated from the board it was attached to. Not only was this discovered, it was also found that the object retained its anomalous properties even when the nail itself was fragmented and divided into smaller pieces. After reporting these properties to the Foundation infrastructure committee, further testing was approved to investigate the potential application of SCP-XXXX as a potential construction material for Foundation infrastructure, such as containment facilities and Sites, as well as MTF equipment.
The results of these tests illuminated the potential of SCP-XXXX as a construction and infrastructure material to the Foundation as a whole; it was found through rigorous testing that SCP-XXXX had the ability to withstand masses in excess of 10,000 tonnes per cubic millimetre, as well as the ability to balance objects in excess of 1km away from the object’s centre of gravity. Any structure that supported SCP-XXXX was seemingly unaffected by massive weights applied to SCP-XXXX itself, allowing for enormous weights to be carried by relatively weak foundational structures. Another anomalous factor in SCP-XXXX's suitability as a construction material is its highly malleable nature; despite its toughness and durability, SCP-XXXX can easily be shaped and reformed without considerable effort, one of the factors that lead to its initial fragmentation.
At this point, SCP-XXXX became a widely desired material among Foundation infrastructure workers and architects; its potential to support enormous weight and balance any object regardless of physical improbability had the potential to maximise the Foundation’s security over its anomalous objects. Production of SCP-XXXX as a building material began the following month; further tests proved that a ‘vertical slice’ method of fragmenting SCP-XXXX was most effective, as horizontal slices were found to weaken SCP-XXXX’s effects, and production technology was refined to the point that SCP-XXXX slices became as thin as 0.03 micrometres in thickness without compromising on the effectiveness of the object, allowing for millions of SCP-XXXX specimens to be created and used.
SCP-XXXX technology is now used in approximately 17% of all Foundation containment facilities, especially with regards to containment facilities for Keter-class entities. One of its most notable roles is as an integral component of Scranton Reality Anchors; without SCP-XXXX, the internal mechanism of the Scranton Reality Anchor would collapse in on itself due to the sheer weight of the Hume-fragment matter generated through its functioning.
Addendum XXXX-A: In March 2003, Foundation researcher █████ Turley recovered a 0.3cm x 0.4 cm x 120mm fragment of the original wooden board used as the backing structure of SCP-XXXX from the former Site-31 breakroom fireplace; upon attaching a regular iron nail to the board, Turley found that the nail was weakly affected by the anomaly that affects the original SCP-XXXX.
The new nail, classified as SCP-XXXX-1 was given supporting abilities far beyond a conventional nail, being able to support and lift objects 20 times its original weight; researchers were even able to lie on XXXX-1 on its own without considerable discomfort, though they were not able to balance themselves upon it as effectively as was possible with the original SCP-XXXX specimen. The weakness of XXXX-1 notably corresponded with the relatively small size of the SCP-XXXX fragment it was attached to; it is therefore hypothesised that, had the SCP-XXXX backing board not been destroyed, it likely could have been used to produce more SCP-XXXX specimen.
Special Containment Procedures:
Description: SCP-XXXX is an enormous non-Euclidean space enclosed within the exterior of a 20th Century era terraced three-story home in Dublin, Ireland. The building is non-Euclidian to the effect that its inside far surpasses the size of its outer walls, and that the interior geometry is warped. Many rooms are physically far too small to fit a human being, but easily occupy several in spite of this fact; rooms can appear to ‘overlap’ each other, such that entering the same space using a different door would yield a different resulting room.
It is unknown from what source the special anomaly derives from, but it has been retrofitted to function as a block of residential housing, fitting approximately 250 units or so where Euclidian geometry would fit only four. However, the room layouts are very sub-standard; access to many rooms involves passing through several other housing units, fitting oneself through extremely narrow spaces or passing through corridors several kilometres in length. Many of the rooms of the house appear at this point to be inaccessible, with some rooms having never been entered in years. In addition to this, many of the rooms exhibit signs of poor craftmanship and a lack of maintenance, including faulty electrical wiring, uneven flooring and vegetation growing in corners. More details can be found in Document XXXX-01.
SCP-XXXX was first discovered on 16/03/2018 after an anonymous tip to the local housing authority on substandard living conditions. When discovered, SCP-XXXX was found housing hundreds of individuals, each with full apparent knowledge of the anomalous nature of their premises. The living quality of many of the tenants was substandard, with many suffering from a lack of sunlight or disease due to their poor living conditions. Some tenants seemed confused as to where they were, claiming they had tried to find an exit for hours beforehand. When questioned about their presence in the building, most responded that they had full legal rights to remain in the building. Extraction procedures were carried out nonetheless, using force where necessary.
Once extracted, residents were brought into nearby Site-355 for questioning. They claimed they were legal tenants of the house and had paid rent to live there. When asked why they chose this residence, many claimed that the €400 euro a month rent had significantly undercut the rent of other properties in the area; many others claimed they could not move out due to the high prices of the area. Several residents took the opportunity to voice their dissatisfaction with the living conditions, under the mistaken belief that the Foundation was a housing authority. When questioned as to why they never came to authorities with their dissatisfactions, they claimed they were threatened by the landlord with eviction if they ever spoke up about their conditions. Of those who complained about issues involving their housing conditions:
• 51 complained about a lack of windows or natural light/air causing quality of life issues.
• 36 complained about sanitary issues, including pest infestation and dampness in the floor.
• 31 complained of a lack of insulation or temperature control resulting in cold living conditions.
• 19 complained about the inaccessibility of their rooms, including having to walk several kilometres to leave the building, or having to fit through excessively small spaces to leave their rooms.
• 11 complained of medical problems, such as sore joints, from the effects of spatial distortion on their bodies.
• 6 complained of their furniture dramatically decreasing in size once extracted from the building, rendering them worthless.
Once the questioning retrieved information on the landlord who owned the property, all residents were amnesticised, their keys to the property were removed from their person, and they were removed from the Site. The subsequent search for the landlord resulted in the arrest of John Landon, the legal owner of SCP-XXXX and hereby referred to as POI-XXXX-1. He was brought into Foundation custody and interviewed by Dr. Kiely. Interview transcript is as follows:
Dr. Kiely: Could you please describe your background to me?
POI-XXXX-1: You’re definitely not the guards are you? I’m not speaking without a lawyer, I have my rights.
Dr. Kiely: Please relax, sir. We’re just scientists, interested in the effects of your property. Nothing said in this interview will be used against you in a court of law.
POI-XXXX-1: Sure, okay. I’m a landlord, been working in the business for years. I own a few properties around the country, though none quite like this. Obviously no freaky stuff going on in the other places, everything above board.
Dr. Kiely: How did you first come into possession of this building?
POI-XXXX-1: Bought it. It was going cheap, needed a bit of development, so I mortgaged it so I could rent it out. The seller warned me that there was something freaky about the kitchen, but sure there’s always freaky things going on when you buy a house like this.
Dr. Kiely: What condition was the house in when you first found it?
POI-XXXX-1: A real shithole. Paint was all stripped, cobwebs everywhere, windows boarded up and broken in. But there was the obvious as well. The big thing. In the kitchen.
Dr. Kiely: The kitchen?
POI-XXXX-1 I hadn’t seen anything like it. There it was – the kitchen was the size of a football field. It was insane. I felt like I had gone insane! And – and – the things in the kitchen, the countertop and all that, they were normal sized, but somehow they fit the space as usual. But the space was enormous. It didn’t make any sense to me.
Dr. Kiely: And you didn’t mention this to anyone?
POI-XXXX-1: I did of course. I went online with it. Looked for anyone who could help. Got one response from a guy. Sounded like he was experienced with this stuff.
Dr. Kiely: Who was this person?
POI-XXXX-1: No idea. Said his name was Jack or something. His online handle was ‘The Spaceman’ on the forum. He said he’d meet me there so we met up.
Dr. Kiely:How did this meeting go?
POI-XXXX-1: He went in to take a look. He came out, said he found some room to add a few more spaces for more residents, and he’d make it worth my while. I obviously did not expect the improvements he made to be so dramatic, even with the massive space in the house, but I wasn’t complaining.
POI-XXXX-1: No no, no qualifications or licenses or anything like that. He did show me his handiwork, though, showed me this box thingy. I could fit my entire arm in it, and like, it was the size of a Rubik’s Cube or something. It was mental. I believed him after that. Anyway, he went in and built about fifty units
