SCP Class: Euclid
Containment Procedure:
SCP-4956-1 is to be contained in a standard large containment room at site 66. The room is to be specially modified with double-sealed cabinets to allow for testing, a feed chute in the ceiling, and wall lights that emit UV radiation to allow for control of SCP-4956-1’s phase. The room is to be kept pneumatically sealed and all direct entrances are not to be opened without class 4 biohazard gear. While not in testing SCP-4956-1 is to be kept in its dormant phase. SCP-4956-1 is to be fed roughly 20 lbs of brain or bone matter per week. The mix of bone and brain does not matter nor does the type of animal from which it is sourced. SCP-4956-1’s food intake is not to exceed 95 lbs per month.
**SCP-4956-2 instances are to be contained in a containment cell appropriate to their size and kept in (). SCP-4956-2 instances do not need to be fed and any Foundation staff interacting with instances should wear Kevlar body armor protecting the neck, back, and spine.
Should SCP-4956 instances of any kind escape with only the option being termination, explosive weaponry should be utilized. Typical guns and incineration will have little to no effect on SCP-4956 instances. Explosive rounds for guns are able to disable instances but can prove ineffective in some circumstances.**
Description-
SCP-4956-1 is a large plant-like creature. Its appearance is a central bulb similar in appearance to a closed lotus flower with numerous fern coverings and a number of vines sprawling outwards. The main bulb is a dark red color while all other parts are a forest green. SCP-4956-1 is at max height 1.8 meters tall and its main section is roughly 1 meter in diameter. The vines have a length of 1 to 3 meters and are tipped with a large spike. SCP-4956-1 has no root system and can survive harsher temperatures and conditions than any non- anomalous version of the plants which make up its main body. As it has no root system SCP-4956-1 requires roughly 20 lbs of bone and/or brain matter per week to survive. SCP-4956-1 has no requirement for watering nor does it need to be placed in soil to survive. SCP-4956-1 is also not especially vulnerable to fire as it needs to be exposed to temperatures exceeding 2500 degrees Kelvin before it will sustain any injury.
SCP-4956-1 will spend most of its time in a dormant phase. While in this dormant phase SCP-4956-1 will not move, attack or display any anomalous effects. However, while exposed to direct sunlight or a similar amount of similar radiation SCP-4956-1 will enter an active phase. During this active phase, the central bulb will open to a diameter of .3 meters and shrink vertically slightly and the ferns will open outwards. If SCP-4956 detects the presence of any medium to large land-based vertebrate creature within range, the vines will animate and attempt to pierce the neck or spine of the detected creature. If the creature is not within the range of the vines, the bulb of SCP-4956 will instead produce a large cloud of yellow spores (SCP-4956-A) which will drift towards the creature. SCP-4956-A has no apparent means of propulsion but will drift towards the creature at a speed of 24 km/h. Should the vines succeed in piercing and fully injecting a liquid form of SCP-4956-A or the creature inhales SCP-4956-A they will become infected and henceforth be called SCP-4956-2-1 to SCP-4956-2-n.
If the subject inhales SCP-4956-A they will be immediately infected and there is no interrupting the process aside from killing the subject. SCP-4956-1’s infection targets the spine and nervous system. The infection will progress causing no damage until SCP-4956-A has completely encased the nervous system over a period of 2 days at which point it will assume control of the subject, destroying all organs and muscle tissue as well as all brain matter. All matter that was destroyed will be replaced with a dark purple translucent substance. This substance is capable of acting as needed such as contracting to act as a muscle and softening to allow for impact reduction. The nervous system of the animal remains and now glows the same color as SCP-4956-A.
As the subject is replaced with the substance it will undergo some physical changes. The subject will retain its basic proportions, but bipedal subjects will become quadrupeds and the subject’s mouth will become elongated with additional canine teeth resembling a bear or wolves muzzle. If the subject is missing limbs they will also be recreated, but only as existing limbs. e.g subject missing a right leg will gain a replacement left leg. SCP-4956-2 instances gain speed, strength, and damage resistance as compared to their normal counterparts. The bones of the animal also remain but undergo no change. However the nervous system and bones also now hold no purpose and removing them will have no effect on the performance of the SCP-4956-2 instance.
The subject is now an SCP-4956-2 instance and will begin to act as such. SCP-4956-2 instances will actively seek out other valid subjects and either convert them in the same manner as the vines of SCP-4956-1 or will kill the subject and bring it back to SCP-4956-1 as food. SCP-4956-2 instances will display different behaviors depending on which animal was used to create it. Wolves, dogs, and humans will all display pack tactics and may gang up to assault towns or villages while other animals such as bears, deer will act as solitary hunters. Herd animals such as cows will also retain herd behaviors and run if a designated leader is spooked or killed. As the SCP-4956 -2 instances have no way of communicating it is believed that they also gain a mild telepathic connection. SCP-4956-2 instances will hunt during the day and guard SCP-4956-1 at night as SCP-5649-1 is in its dormant state. SCP-4956-2 Instances do not require substance, but will consume all the meat and fat from any prey brought to SCP-4956-1 leaving SCP-4956-1 to only consume bone and brain matter. It is not known what purpose of SCP-4956-2 consuming meat has.
Should SCP-4956-1 be brought enough material (about 10 times its weekly requirement over an unknown period) it will produce from the central bulb a smaller version of SCP-4956-1 (SCP-4956-B). Multiple SCP-4956-2 instances (2-5 depending on the size)will then combine into a larger SCP-4956-2 instance and retrieve SCP-4956-B and bring it to a new location roughly 1000 km away. The larger SCP-4956-2 instance will then protect SCP-4956-B until it grows to half the size of SCP-4956 over a period of a month. It will then act as a regular SCP-4956-2 and retrieve more food for SCP-4956-B. After 2 more months, SCP-4956-B will be full-grown and be designated SCP-4956-1-1 to SCP-4956-1-n
Should the subject be infected through the vines of SCP-4956-1 or the teeth/claws of the SCP-4956 -2 instance, the full infection process will happen over about 40 seconds. However, this process can be interrupted. If the subject is removed before the nervous system is completely taken over by SCP-4956-A they will not become a full SCP-4956-2 instance. These SCP-4956-n instances fall into roughly 5 categories depending on the percentage of conversion.
SCP-4956-3) 0% to 25%
These instances are functionally identical to the subject before the attempted conversion and sustain no anomalous effects other than having a portion of their nervous system covered in an inert form of SCP-4956-A.
SCP-4956-4 ) 25%-75%
These instances are mostly mentally identical to the subject before the attempted conversion, but SCP-4956-1 will attempt to trigger the transformation into a full SCP-4956-2 instance. This results in all bodily functions to shut down, however, the subject will no longer need these functions causing no negative effects. The subject now has no blood pressure, no heartbeat, no breathing, and hair will no longer grow. The subject will also gain some increase in strength, speed, and durability. Through testing these instances they gain no increase or decrease in mental capability, personality, or memory leading to the belief that the brain is the last body-part to be converted.
SCP-4956-5 ) 75% to 90%
These instances are the same as SCP_4956-4 but also seem to gain the telepathic abilities of the full SCP-4956-1 instances.
SCP-4956-6 ) 90%-9?%
At this stage the infection appears to make a final surge towards completing the conversion, recedes, then progresses again to complete the infection. Interrupting this seems to mildly destroy the subjects mental capacity and/or their telepathic abilities.
SCP-4956-2) This is the standard fully converted SCP-4956-2 instance.
Testing
Procedure:
By baiting SCP-4956-1 into spraying SCP-4956-A and obtaining it, tests can be carried out by exposing a subject to it. A number of tests using the gaseous form of SCP-4956-A were carried out, however, all tests using it resulted in an SCP-4956-2 instance forming.
By placing SCP-4956-1 into a dormant state and separating one vine and restraining it in a separate room, tests can be performed. If SCP-4956-1 does not attempt to inject the subject forcibly pushing the subject onto the spike will cause the vine to inject anyway. Attempting to cut a vine off and using it will cause the SCP-4956-A to become inert and the vine will act as any other dead flora.
Interviews
Acquirement:
SCP-4956 first came to the attention of the Foundation when reports of glowing monsters from hikers were reported in from various locations along the western side of the Rocky Mountains. Mobile Task Force Theta-4 was dispatched
After some investigative research, an SCP-4956-2 instance was located. MTF Theta-4 witnessed a deer being killed and retrieved by said instance. Tracking devices were placed on various other wildlife to locate the nest or community that they operated in or around. A successful tracking lead MTF Theta-4 to SCP-4956-1-1.
In the process of discovering a way to contain SCP-4956-1-1 MTF Theta-4 was attacked by 4 SCP-4956-2 instances. Gunfire proved ineffective and the team retreated. During the retreat, one member used a grenade to attempt to distract the instances but succeeded in killing an instance. The force’s remaining grenades dispatched the rest and MTF Theta-4 temporarily retreated to resupply and arm themselves with more explosive weaponry.
After resupplying MTF Theta-4 used a high powered scope to watch SCP-4956-1. During which time, MTF Theta-4 witnessed the guard activity of the SCP-4956-2 instances, the conversion of a deer into an SCP-4956-2 instance, and SCP-4956-1’s dormant transformation at night.
After witnessing the dormant phase of SCP-4956-1 MTF Theta-4 set up a perimeter to prevent any more conversions and to exterminate all SCP-4956-2 instances. Once all SCP-4956-2 instances were exterminated, MTF Theta-4 waited for nightfall and began containment.
To ensure no Theta-4 members were killed and to ensure the dormant state a large metal triangle was constructed and placed over SCP-4956-1 by helicopter. SCP-4956-1 was then transported to Site 66.
3 more SCP-4956-1 instances were found along the Rockies. Once it was determined that these were copies of SCP-4956-1 they were similarly captured and used to determine containment procedures.
