He walked slowly down the long, monochrome corridor that led to the conference room, dreading the conversation he was about to have. The 05 never spoke with him so directly unless they were demanding results from the experiments he was to govern or whether or not he’d made any breakthrough with the mortal cinderblock tied around his neck. But he knew exactly what this meeting was for. He was sick of working for such a cold establishment, and had announced his retirement just a few days ago. He cracked a smile as he neared the door. For such powerful members of the Foundation, the 05 were certainly behind when it came to receiving news about their own subordinates.

As he’d expected, there wasn’t a body in the room but his own. The conference room was dimly lit, only really illuminated by the glow of white screens along the wall on the farside of the room. Every screen only showed a number, labeled One through Five. He should’ve been terrified, given that these “people” were the most powerful members of The SCP Foundation. Instead, he smiled, defiantly robbing these executives of the powerful fear they held over his friends and colleagues.

“Hello, Doctor Bright. Please, take a seat.” 01 piped up, likely referring to the long table that sat between the screens and Bright. He complied and sat, cradling his head in his hands as he watched the screens. “We understand you had announced your retirement earlier this week.”

“We can’t allow you to do that, Doctor. You’re our most valuable researcher, and a test subject yourself. After all, you are bound to SCP-963, and allowing such an anomaly to simply walk out would fly in the face of everything we are trying to do here.” 02 interjected.

“I’m clearly not like the other anomalies. Yes, 963 is considered Euclid, but that’s entirely due to the fact that it’s a part of me. You can’t stop me, Council. I’m going to walk to my car after this meeting, I’m going to drive home, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life trying to figure out how to get me out of this damn thing.” Bright explained, struggling for the first time in his career to keep his cool.

“That’s where you’re wrong Doctor. You are SCP-963. You are, by the nature of this Foundation, meant to be contained. Most importantly, we don’t want the Foundation’s enemies to get their hands on such a powerful item. Doctor Bright, you are too much of a threat to Foundation security to be allowed to leave.” 03 responded, stopping every so often to cough.

Bright sat there, dumbfounded. He didn’t know what the 05 planned to do to stop him, but he knew there likely wasn’t going to be any escape from them. He couldn’t just walk out, and he’d never be able to overpower whatever they sent his way in their attempts to contain him. If he could, he’d absolutely kill himself to avoid the fate laid out before him. However, the amulet dangling around his neck made such a perfect last resort impossible.

“So, are you going to have security come and detain me?” Bright asked, not looking up from his shoes.

“Unfortunately, Doctor, we must. It is standard protocol in the event of a breach of this magnitude.” said 04, hardly trying to hide his amusement of the whole affair. “In fact, they’ll be in shortly to escort you to a proper containment cell. Any parting words?”

Bright smiled and stood up, looking at the screens with a confidence he’d only felt a few times before. He took a deep breath and recited the line he’d spent the past few days memorizing.

“2521.” He called out, sternly reciting these four numbers as he heard the council roar like a hornet’s nest. He hardly paid much attention as he felt the bandage-like tendrils wrap around him.

“Bright? What is this?!” 01 roared, infuriated by this new development. “Don’t think you can escape this way, Bright! We will find you!”

The last words of Doctor Bright parted onto the bewildered 05 Council left them relatively speechless. Never before had someone’s final sentiment chilled them so, even after their lifetimes of controlling a thing as dangerous as The Foundation. As he faded into the darkness with SCP-2521, they seemed to echo in the empty conference room.

“This is just my little Ace in the Hole.”
