Dr. Jen: Hello, Daniel. I'm here to-
Daniel: Listen, I didn't want to do it, I swear!
Dr. Jen: Daniel, don't worry, I believe you. We just need to know how you appeared behind that counter.
Daniel: Remains silent for a few moments
Dr. Jen: Daniel, it's very important that you tell me what's going on, or else they'll think you actually wanted to rob the place.
Daniel: It's just that… god, this is crazy, you'll never believe me.
Dr. Jen: I'm not sure about that. There's a lot of weird shit I see in my job. Come on. Try me.
More silence
Daniel: I promised the her I wouldn't say anything.
Dr. Jen: …her?
Daniel: Listen, I know it sounds crazy, but she was talking to me! I swear on my mom she was!
Dr. Jen: Do you mind telling who "she" is?
Daniel: Sighs Well, I might as well tell you everything.
Dr. Jen: Please.
Daniel: So I decided to go on a camping trip here in Alaska. I've done it before with some buddies, but this time they didn't want to go with me. The tour guides wouldn't take me either, they all warned me of some snowstorm that would come in a couple of days. They all said I should wait it out, then come after it was over. I just thought, "Fuck it. How bad could it be? It's just a little cold. I've camped during a snowstorm." I thought I would be fine. I didn't think it wouldn't be that cold. I thought I was going to freeze to death out there. I'm pretty sure I was getting frostbite, I couldn't feel my fingers, toes, nose. I couldn't move, I was so cold, so I decided to cut my trip short. Tonight, the night I was planning on leaving, the storm really hit. It ripped up my damn tent. Jesus Christ, it so was cold, I couldn't think. I just got up out of what was left of the tent, and had the bright idea of just hiking all the way back I came from to my car! It made perfect fucking sense, "Let me just waltz through this storm to my car." I guess the cold was messing with my judgement. I was shuffling along in the snow, and I could barely walk. I couldn't see an inch in front of my nose, I'm not even sure I was walking the right way, it was so damn cold, I couldn't feel my arms or legs. I think I fell, I couldn't tell, everything felt the same. It felt like I was laying there forever, when suddenly, everything felt so nice. I wasn't cold anymore, I was all warm. I thought I died and went Heaven or some shit. I look up and I see this giant tree. Like, it's just this enormous tree.
Dr. Jen: Did you know what type of tree it was?
Daniel: Yeah, a Redwood. I camped at some state park in California and saw them everywhere. It's my favorite type of tree.
Dr. Jen: Go on.
Daniel: Sure. So, I stand up and look up at the tree. Now I really thought I was dead. All the other trees around it are the normal spruce trees from before. I looked around and as far as I could see, there wasn't any snow anywhere. It all looked orange from the sunset. I didn't feel any pain from before, I could feel all my extremities. God, it was unfathomably big. Just thinkin' about her makes my brain hurt. I'm sure that two side-by-side cars could easily drive through! I heard an old lady's voice ask, "Are you warm now?" Her voice was everywhere. It was the tree. I told her I was and thanked her. She made me promise not to tell anyone so they don't come looking for her. She told me she hates the attention. We talked for a long time, but the way she talked reminded me of my grandma. She had dementia and would speak really really slow. I think the tree had… dementia? Towards the end of our conversation she was just speaking full nonsense, just like my grandma before she died. I can't help but think that that tree was my grandma.
His voice begins to crack
Dr. Jen: Don't worry, take your time.
Daniel: Nah, I'm good. That's all I got, I'd like to leave now.
Dr. Jen: Thank you for your time.
