What You Need to Hear or, a very insightful desk

Class: Safe

Containment: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a standard room decorated by wallpaper with a repeating fleur-de-lis and a large closed curtain on the back wall. Illumination must take either the form of incandescent bulbs or candlelight.

At least every three (3) days, SCP-XXXX is to be used by a member of foundation staff determined by site psychologists, with priority given to personnel who have recently taken time off due to personal trauma (see additional resource x for full criteria.)

As of [redact], testing on D-class is strictly prohibited without 04 approval.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a letter writing desk [dimensions] in late 19th century American style, though carbon dating of the wood shows it to be at least [four digit redact] years old. There are five (5) drawers on the desk, though four (4) of these appear to be either decorative or unable to be opened. The openable top drawer contains a letter opener made of gold, and an anomolous white letter of standard postage dimensions (SCP-XXXX-1)

SCP-XXXX-1 can contain a variety of different types of mail, most commonly letters or postcards, though in each case they are addressed to or in some way recognized by those who open it. These can be recorded through transcription, scanning, or photography, though instances of SCP-XXXX-1 disappear after being replaced in the envelope and drawer. If instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are not replaced within [redact] minutes, they vanish and a new instance of SCP-XXXX-1 appears in the drawer simultaneously.

SCP-XXXX-1 invariably provokes a strong emotional response from recipients, with increased tear production and weeping in every recorded instance, as well as smiling and audible expressions of gratitude (both in 90% of recorded instances.) In a sizeable minority of those who interact with SCP-XXXX-1, admissions of guilt and expressions of regret or apology, usually culminating in a self-harm or suicide attempt.

SCP-XXXX exhibits certain anomolous effects should it be ignored for more than three days. Among these are an echoing sound of fingers rapping on wood perceived by those in a xm radius, increasing in volume and area by xdb and xm every half hour. After four days of isolation, weeping is additionally perceived. After a week or more of isolation, a feeling of longing or loneliness is experienced by those in perception range. Should SCP-XXXX-1 be interacted with, these effects immediately diperse, with no apparent long term effects resulting.
