SCP-4152
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-4152 is to be kept in a standard minimum-security subsection in Non-Interactive Non-Ambulatory Organic Containment Greenhouse 2 (High Humidity Sector) [hereafter referred to as "the Greenhouse"] at Site-47.
SCP-4152 is to kept in standard full-sun growing conditions and be watered once per day by any available D-Class personnel. This watering can be done whenever the Greenhouse's routine maintenance schedule permits, as long as it is done during daylight hours. This task requires no special PPE beyond those precautions described in the Greenhouse Best Practices manual under subheading B.12: "Basic Non-Interactive Non-Ambulatory Organic SPC Handling".
Personnel performing watering duty are required to have consumed at least 95mg-105mg of caffeine (roughly one standard cup of coffee) no earlier than four (4) hours prior to watering.
SCP-4152 is to remain at all times in its original media and in its original condition — repotting, pruning, training, etc are, as of this writing, considered unnecessary.
SCP-4152's subsection is to be monitored at all times by video surveillance. Security personnel are instructed to watch out specifically for anyone sitting, resting, leaning, or giving the appearance of sleeping or approaching sleep. The ranges of SCP-4152's influence is still in question. As such the Greenhouse Policy and Procedures documents have been updated to reflect that ALL security monitors should be on the lookout for sleeping personnel anywhere in the Greenhouse. Proper signage has been posted. [We have no indications that SCP-4152 has had any effect on any personnel sleeping in their assigned quarters. Until such time as we have a better understanding of SCP-4152's area of effect, Euclid classification should be maintained. —Dr. Roland]
Any personnel found sleeping or giving the appearance of sleeping should be detained and sent to Medical for psychological evaluation. If the subject shows signs of having been affected by SCP-4152, they should be transferred to the Human Research section for further testing and data collection. Subjects showing no signs of being affected are to be reassigned. As the issue of D-Class personnel serving the entire duration of their 30 days has become a sensitive budgetary issue, termination of D-Class violating this specific safety protocol is no longer recommended. —Dr. Roland
Description:
SCP-4152 is a privet bonsai tree (Lingustrum lucidum) measuring 45.72cm tall with a dripline of 73.23cm.
SCP-4152 in its subcontainment
SCP-4152 has not increased in size or foliation at any point outside of authorized testing on D-Class subjects. During such testing, minute increased in growth have been measured.
SCP-4152 shows signs of distress when deprived of water, oxygen, and/or sunlight in a manner indistinguishable from standard, non-anomalous Lingustrum spp.
Effects:
Any subject in a state of REM sleep exposed to SCP-4152 at first describes the experience as entirely peaceful. Testing on D-Class personnel diagnosed with sleep disturbances caused by PTSD or cPTSD (insomnia, nightmares, and/or night terrors) report a complete and immediate cessation of such disturbances.
Relief continues even after the subject is taken out of the presumed area of activation of SCP-4152. The subject is completely cured of all nightmares and/or night terrors, and will not experience them again.
Over time, the subject slowly stops dreaming altogether. Time until complete cessation of dreaming during REM sleep varies by subject, with the quickest observed effect being at 23 days, and the longest being at 49 days. The variability seems to correlate positively with the severity of pre-testing symptoms; subjects with more severe PTSD and cPTSD appear to resist the loss of dreams for longer periods of time than subjects with less pronounced conditions.
Once all dreaming ceases, the subject begins to experience feelings of ennui, hopelessness, and dispair. Plans for the future become progressively more vague, until such time as the subject can foresee no positive future events for themselves at all. Potential neutral or negative futures appear to be unaffected. Progression to this stage is much more rapid and more consistent than the previous, with the time from the elimination of REM dreaming to the onset of critical levels of depression varying from 10 to 12 days. No correlation between pre-testing psychological state and critical depression has been determined.
Subjects at this stage rapidly begin to suffer from suicidal ideation, and will eventually take any opportunity to terminate themselves.
SCP-4152 does not appear to be capable of affecting more than one subject at a time.
To date, there have been no successes in halting or reversing this process. Once activated, SCP-4152 has a 100% fatality rate. Further testing on humans is suspended, and anyone wishing to conduct a test SCP-4152 involving living humans must submit a full proposal to Dr. Roland (Project Head), which will be reviewed by the 05 council and the Ethics Committee.
Proposals for tests not involving living human subjects will be reviewed and approved or denied at Dr. Roland's discretion.
Discovery:
SCP-4152 was discovered by Agent ██████, embedded with the ███████, ██ police force while investigating the murder-suicide of the ████ family. Against protocols, Agent ██████, mistaking SCP-4152 for a non-anomalous bonsai tree, removed it from the scene for his own personal use once the investigation was completed.
Agent ██████'s suicide came two months later, after he had rotated into a new assignment as head of security for Site ██. The incident was investigated under standard Foundation protocols, which included a background history check for every non-Foundation-issued item in his quarters. Investigators discovered that SCP-4152 had been present on the scene of several prior suicides spanning at least the previous █ years. Further experimentation revealed its anomalous nature and need for confinement.
Deeper investigation into SCP-4152's origins revealed that SCP-4152 was shipped to America from a wholesaler (██████████████, Inc) in Japan. As of this time, we assume SCP-4152 is a singular anomaly, but due to the incomplete purchase records from the wholesaler, this cannot be confirmed. Field Agents have been instructed to be on the lookout for any bonsai trees when investigating suicides.
