SCP-5986

Item #: SCP-5986

Object class: Safe

Description: SCP-5986 is a 3 year old domestic Mongolian gerbil, known as 'Honeybunch' weighing approximately 50g. SCP-5986 exhibits distinct brain activity that is anomalous in comparison to other gerbil specimens, and is able to perform tasks that would be otherwise impossible for a gerbil.

SCP-5986 was purchased from a pet store in T███████, New Zealand, on █/██/2018, and displayed anomalous properties almost immediately. Posts on social media made by SCP-5986's owner from around the time of purchase indicate that SCP-5986 showed remarkable intelligence. Examples of this include:

  • █/██/2018: An Instagram story, showing SCP-5986 formulating words by running across a keyboard
  • █/██/2018: An Instagram story, showing a fragment of carrot that SCP-5986 appears to have chewed into a flute-like instrument
  • █/██/2019: A tweet, reading: "Honeybunch just picked the lock on my drawer. What the actual fuck. SMH this gerbil playing too much"

SCP-5986 was brought to the Foundation's knowledge in March 2019 when New Zealand authorities reported abnormal activity on their servers. The Foundation were able to establish that SCP-5986 had been gaining unauthorized access to NZSIS computers while its owner was out of the house. Despite the apparent security threat posed by SCP-5986's extensive knowledge of technology, Foundation staff researching SCP-5986 believe such black hat activity is not spurred by malice, but rather a lack of mental stimulation.

Wassup. I'm currently monitoring Honeybunch (that funky little gerbil genius thing) and I feel bad > for him, I really do. He's stuck in his tiny little mesh pet cage but he's smarter than all of us
combined. Can we not give him something to do? Maybe some low-level document sorting? I don't > want him to be bored.

Hi Dr. ███ ████,
We discussed your request at our Monday briefing, and while we agree that it is morally and
professionally wrong to leave SCP-5986 unstimulated, it would be far too risky to allow unfettered > access to Foundation documents of any kind. Motion accepted to find tasks for SCP-5986 to perform, but motion denied to allow SCP-5986 to deal with any of the Foundation's work.

Thanks,
SCP Foundation Ethics Committee

MRI scans performed on SCP-5986 show that its brain activity is approximately 1078x more than that of a non-anomalous Mongolian gerbil. Regular testing is recommended to ascertain how such activity is medically possible. While testing is ongoing, SCP-5986 is to be kept at Site ██, Hunga Tonga. Class C amnestics are to be administered to SCP-5986's original owner.
