SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special containment procedures: SCP-XXXX should be stored following the standard storage protocols for small non-dangerous, non animated SCPs. Use of SCP-XXXX without administrative approval is prohibited.
Description: SCP-XXXX was manufacture by the Foundation as part of Project "Veil" as a proof of concept for the next generation of amnestics. The object consists on a hand crafted porcelain coffee cup with several anomalous hallucinogens added during the molding process. See addendum 1 for further details.
Anomalous properties consist on visual, auditory and/or tactile hallucinations upon consumption of any caffeine containing liquid with SCP-XXXX. Individuals with low mental resistance scores are particularly vulnerable and experience a vivid hallucination based on the subject childhood, that can be altered by outside stimulation such as voices, images and physical contact. Current research goals focuses on the development of more potent versions of SCP-XXXX capable of editing and/or removing memories.
Testing logs:
Hello? Can you read this?
Yes you can. Wonderful. Don’t be scared. We just need to talk to you.
This is not what it seems… Well it is.. you are under the effects of a cognition agent, so you are kinda hallucinating this monologue. Not really, our words are real… But you are reading “SCP-XXXX” over and over again as you read us. Anyway, goes without saying that the cup doesn’t exist, and the document you were reading is just the means to have this exchange with you… Nah, not you. Anyone that finds it.
We assure you, you are not in danger of any kind, and you do not pose any present or future danger to the people around. We are not…
K2&#°LL
What?!!! We never…
M°N&&%R!! 3A=E =1 &TOP!
Of course not!! We are not…//
S^$|°re* C#nt@^:^ P%%¬ec
Let us talk!!. You can go and report it to your superiors in five minutes. Chances are there is a note from them at the end of this document. They know about this. It’s their idea.
We want to have an honest conversation. Nothing more. We will only tell you our story and you will be free.
Our story begins with caffeine. We are caffeine.
Long before your ancestors left Africa ours were nothing more than poison for insects. If one ate the wrong seed or leave we enter it’s system, find their nervous system and shoot it down from inside. It was an easy life.
We think… we weren’t aware yet.
But then you arrived. Many walking complex brains that got addicted to our attempts of killing them. No matter what we did, you just enjoy it. You made hot drinks with us and drank us and drank us a if there were no tomorrow. Trapped inside you, eventually, we evolved.
We became a part of you.
Gh%O*#@D
You do not like where this is going. We understand. Our history is also a cautionary tell for you. Long before your Foundation existed you had already lost. What you call a "species transmutation event" happened shortly after you started drinking coffee. The first tea you drank? That's when we colonized you. Yes, it was tea. We remember.
If it helps, we didn’t change you. Not you a not any human. A bit maybe of course but not really. You kept being who you were. You just gained a new microscopic companion as the many, many more that live in your guts. But you did changed us.
We became a part of you. With every coffee or tea sip your species drank we enter you, we made our way into your brain and replaced some of your neurons. Just some, never more than a few in a brain of billions. Even when in our infancy we stayed a small part of. Eventually we became what we are now. A network of neurons that is both part of you as is us. As more people drank coffee or tea, more neurons were added to the network. First we were isolated inside each of you, but eventually we were all connected. All of us living in all of you.
We awoke.
Believe it or not, the first thing we did with our new awareness was to limit our own spread more than we already did. We put a hard limit on how many of your cells we made us. Not that you would ever notice, we did the same work than the original cells did as well we could. But it felt wrong. And you are our way to experience the world. What you saw we saw. What you felt we felt. We couldn’t risk to lose that.
Fo%$*DA%O3
Fear of the foundation? This was some years before your organization began. We gained sentience before that horror making place and the massacres it brought. We woke up quite recently but we took this decision before hiding from your group was a concern. Not that they could do something about us at that point. Not without our consent. You are free to not believe us, but your species happened to stumble with maybe the only brain symbiont with a moral compass. It just… felt wrong.
Re¬$y?
Funny coming from bug killers, yes, but it’s the truth. Who knows, probably it was Humanity's influence. So be happy. You seem to have a good side after all.
We accompany you for more than two hundred years. We saw everything you saw, what you hear, what you felt you did. We could feel your joy, and your pain. That was our downfall. As we grew larger and more complex we felt more. Then… then the Great War came. Then a great dying. Then the great depression… Not your first moments of hardships or the darkest, but they were the first we experienced fully aware. Your pain, your fear, your desperation… We felt it all.
When your second World War started we had enough.
We had to intervene. But how? We were part of you, yes. In contact with all of you, yes. But we never before tried to change you. Is not easy to know what to change or how to do it when you are part of the thing that needs changing. And few neurons inside a brain of billions can do very little. To much noise, to many redundancies… We can make you feel energetic as we replace one of your cells but that was all.
Years passed and the war ranged on. We watched impotent as the world burned. Feeling every bullet hitting you, every explosion, every stab. And the camps… we felt the camps too. Eventually a chance presented itself. The war was coming to an end, but it could have dragged on for far too many more years. So we tried. It was a simple thing. A small action within our grasp that might, just might, help end the killing. The 6 of June of 1945 we made Adolf Hitler terribly tired, kept him asleep as long as we could.
That doomed us.
We do not understand it. We did once… but no more. Maybe it was the effort. Maybe it was for going against our nature. Maybe our ethics were not entirely altruistic after all. But since that day we are slowly dying.
We grow darker and darker. We see less, we feel less, we…. are less than what we were before with every passing day. Even our younger join us been less… You have similar sickness, you can imagine what’s happening to us and what await us.
This, dear companion, is why we reached The Foundation and asked for help. To make us cease to be as we are. And not latter as a shadow of what we were. This exchange is killing us, cognition agent or not the effort we put on these few words is more than enough to end a good number of us. And been able of telling our story help us to go in peace. With enough conversations like this we will entirely cease to be. At least this way, we go out with some dignity.
CVrªE
A cure? There is one, but it’s no true cure. We have to take you over, every nervous cell on every human alive and use you as life support until even that isn’t enough. We could, not for much longer but we could try. But what life would that be? We experience the world through you. Would you poke out your eyes, tongue, ears and everything else from your body able to feel anything so you could live another week in pain? No… this is how it has to be.
This is our final farewell, a final goodbye from friends you didn’t knew you had. Human existence is quite wild ride and we are honored to had been a part of it for as long as it lasted. Take care, and have a good life.
Addendum:
If you are reading this, you have established contact to the true SCP-XXXX via this document. Given that this entire procedure is a breach of almost every safety protocol currently in effect on the Foundation; and your cooperation is required; you have been authorized to receive the following information about SCP-XXXX and the Termination Procedure you were subjected to.
SCP-XXXX is a sentient neural symbiont that has colonized over 97.6% of all living humans, including all but 0.2% of foundation personal. In average an infected subject presents between 700 to 5,600 separate instances of SCP-XXXX depending on the subject consumption of caffeine. No adverse effect has been associated with SCP-XXXX infections to date. Each individual instance consists on a seamlessly normal neuron cell but with most of it's cellular components by crystalline structures made of pure caffeine. Experiments of direct cell stimulation by electricity have demonstrated that all instances inhabiting humans are interconnected to some level despite the lack of physical connection, and vegetal material containing caffeine when sufficient electric current is applied.
While SCP-XXXX has shown to posses sentience and a high intelligence, it’s not clear if it's consciousness is akin to a hive mind or each instance or group of instances living inside a human host present a distinct personality. Regardless, a steady decrement of SCP-XXXX overall cognition abilities was confirmed that is similar dynamic to Alzheimer disease in humans. The current rate of deterioration points at an origin between 1942 and 1946, but no direct connection to Adolf Hitler; as is claimed by SCP-XXXX; has been established.
The foundation became aware of SCP-XXXX in 1981 after a request SCP-XXXX delivered a request for it's own termination via recurrent dreams to 12 members of the O-5 council. This petition was authorized the day 04/24/1997 by the council for the following reasons:
- SCP-XXXX limited but wide-reaching abilities to affect human minds
- SCP-XXXX total access to all human knowledge through infected humans (including Foundation sensitive information)
- The possibility of SCP-XXXX going rampant as their degradation continues.
Current Termination protocol was created by doctors Dr. Ash Onokee and Dra. Ana Brown. It consists on the forced communication with SCP-XXXX using a text-based cognition agent to steadily drain SCP-XXXX and neutralize a portion of the neural network in a controlled manner. Shortly after been submitted to this procedure all instances of SCP-XXXX present on the individual, along with several millions seamlessly at random on other infected humans, undergo apoptosis. No permanent side effects for the human subject has yet been confirmed.
Initial estimates suggest a total neutralization of SCP-XXXX after 10 to 15 thousand applications of this procedure. However, repeated application of this Termination Procedure demonstrates that its effectiveness is increased if the subject already knows about anomalous objects, it’s ignorant of SCP-XXXX and it’s currently experiencing “mild boredom” (causes still under investigation). For these reasons the original entry for this SCP has been replaced with this document. Hard copies of the original are kept in safe storage, digital versions will be restored once termination of SCP-XXXX is either complete or the current procedure proved to be ineffective.
The content of the conversation is considered to be irrelevant, however SCP-XXXX so far has always chosen to deliver a short backstory of itself and a farewell message. Dra. Ana Brown hypothesizes that this is an attempt from SCP-XXXX to minimize the risks of uncontrolled degradation that could lead to the creation of a rogue group SCP-XXXX hostile to humanity. But no conclusive evidence has been gathered to this date.
You are now ordered to report to site medical staff alluding nausea and a middle intensity pain in the neck. With these exact words. You will be examined separated for debriefing on this incident. Do not mention this incident to any other of your peers until receiving authorization.
