Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a room which doesn't require to be larger than 3 x 3 metres.
The room should be equipped with systems regulating humidity and temperature, keeping the air in between 45%-55% relative humidity and 16°C-18°C of temperature. A ventilations system should provide for air circulation. Personel handling SCP-XXXX are required to wear rubber gloves in order to preserve the object.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a book with dimensions 23 cm x 19 cm x 2.3 cm. The book is bound in black leather with no visible markings on the outside. The book has a total of 6764 pages, all of which are blank when the object is not in use. The number of pages exceeds the physical limitations of the book. The remains of another ██ pages can also be found in between pages ████-████ and in between pages ████-████, indicating that the book originally had ████ pages. It is unknow when the object suffered from this damage or who is responsible for it.

The origin of SCP-XXXX is currently unknown. The object was found at the Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Cairo by Agent J█████ F███████. The Agent claims to have bought the book from an elderly merchant showcasing the object and various other books on a temporary stand. Initially unaware of the object's nature, the Agent bought it as a memento. The same day, as the Agent started writing in SCP-XXXX, he noticed the object's supernatural nature and immediately contacted the Foundation. SCP-XXXX was secured without further problems. A general description of the salesman was provided and a team was deployed to the bazaar, but has not yet been able to identify the salesman.

SCP-XXXX looks and acts like a normal object as long as nothing is written in it. Once something is written in SCP-XXXX an effect manifests itself which is designated as SCP-XXXX-A. When something is written in English on page 1, it will also appear on all following pages translated into all known languages and numerous yet unknown languages. All known languages have been accounted for, implying that the damaged pages used to translate to unknown languages, which could be a reason for the pages' destruction. SCP-XXXX-A will only manifest itself if a text is written in a spoken language. Drawings, formulas, or programming languages won't be copied to other pages. The writing has been observed, appearing on the following pages as the original text is being written. The book can correctly translate complex sentences which answer to different grammatical rules in different languages and would be wrongly translated word for word. This possibly implies a mental connection to the author, making the book know what the they intend to write before actually writing it. SCP-XXXX can not only translate from English to other languages, but if something is written in the correct language on the correct page, it will also be translated on all other pages, including the English page. If prior to use something is written on a page in a different language than the page would translate to, the page is rendered unusable for the duration of the day.

During the night the pages will turn blank, allowing the book to be reused the following day. Observations show the gradual disappearance of ink over the course of approximately 4 seconds. Small damage done to the pages can repair itself over night. Test have show up to 30% of a page can be destroyed and will regenerate over night. Damage over 30% do not repair and cause the page to be lost forever (this was found in experiments with page 325-326, Gujarati-Konkani, which has been damaged beyond repair). Despite the regenerative effect SCP-XXXX does show to suffer from wear over time, hence the containment procedures.

Tests with D-class personel show there's approximately a █% chance of encountering a second supernatural effect, hereby named SCP-XXXX-B. In certain cases the writing will not be translated, and instead a translation of a seemingly random text will show up on the following pages. These often include gruesome descriptions of murders or tortures, with very detailed portrayals of the acts. The background of the personel encountering SCP-XXXX-B shows no decisive connection, though all subjects are slightly more susceptible to depression. Approximately 7 hours after the SCP-XXXX-B manifests itself, the subjects develop depression, moderate dementia, paranoia and psychosis. █ subjects have also developed schizophrenia. It is notable that even subjects which don't witness SCP-XXXX-B, or even subjects which don't known of the exact nature of SCP-XXXX, develop these disorders. The effects are temporary, lasting up to 2 weeks, with subjects suddenly healing and not showing any signs of the disorders anymore. In interviews with subjects after regaining health it was found the majority do not remember taking part in the experiment and few only having vague memories. When asked the question "What have you been doing for the past 2 weeks?" all of the subjects appear confused and can't answer the question.
