Item #: SCP-4973
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4973 is stationed within Site-██, currently contained within Research Sector-03. It is to be kept within a cell with full insulation behind thermal, rubber-plated walls. The temperature must not drop below 100°C inside the cell while SCP-4973 is in it. Before any Foundation personnel are permitted to enter the chamber, SCP-4973 must be asked to put on the thermal suit held in its cell.
Once the suit's box has been unlocked, DO NOT ASK SCP-4973 TO COMPLETE ANY OTHER TASKS. Asking it to complete multiple requests at a time will to upset it, inducing anxiety-like symptoms and causing it to begin casting itself. Once SCP-4973 is wearing the suit, the chamber's temperature must be lowered to no colder than 20°C. Foundation personnel may now enter. The cell must return to at least 100°C once all personnel have left.
At least one member of staff with level two (2) or higher clearance must monitor the chamber's temperature at all times. In the event of a containment breach, the surrounding sectors' temperature must be set to below freezing and all personnel must evacuate.
No weapons are to come into SCP-4973's direct line of sight unless there is a breach as they upset it. Any personnel found purposefully attempting to aggravate it may be removed with force.
Description: SCP-4973 is a humanoid creature, capable of complex communication. Its body appears to resemble that of a human female with red-tinted skin and long, purple finger nails that have been reported to be unbreakable. Its internal body temperature is 700°C, and its blood appears to run orange before solidifying when directly exposed to oxygen, much like molten rock. It is to only wear thick, black clothing and hats that cover its ears specially made on site to help keep both its external and internal temperature high. Due to its sensitive nature, personnel working within Site-██ have advised against taking photos of it at this time.
When overly anxious, angry or upset, SCP-4973 breaks through its own skin, creating casts of obsidian across its body. The casts are usually present on the lower arms, legs and chest, almost resembling armor. Depending on how extreme the situation is observed to be by SCP-4973, it may also cast its head, neck, upper arms and waist. When the obsidian covers at least its arms, legs and chest, SCP-4973 travels on all fours to distribute the new weight more evenly across its form.
The obsidian is not unbreakable, but SCP-4973 should NOT be attacked while within the armor unless deemed absolutely necessary, as it will only continue to create the casts, increasing its defense. During a breach, guards may only begin the re-containment process after SCP-4973 has collapsed in the cold atmosphere and is producing smoke. This means its blood has started to harden, and it must be returned to its cell quickly to prevent any permanent damage within it. If SCP-4973 does not pass out, guards may begin to consider using force.
Addendum 4973.1: Discovery
SCP-4973 was found attacking a village in ████████ after the inhabitants threatened it. The creature was already fully coated in obsidian when it approached the village in an attempt to defend itself, although it was near collapsing in the low temperature. Researchers are unsure of how it got there as SCP-4973 appeared to be suffering. The SCP Facility captured it and immediately transported it to Site-46 for testing. It has since been moved to Site-██.
Addendum 4973.2: Updated Research
SCP-4973, although capable of complex communication, cannot complete more than one task at a time. It will not be able to produce more obsidian if it is attacking, which means it usually defends itself more than it fights back, although its claws are deadly if used. It appears to enjoy communication and has been granted 1-2 interviews with either D-Class subjects or Researchers per week. If it becomes hostile at any point during these sessions, they will be terminated until further notice, and SCP-4937 is aware of this.
Interviewer: Dr █████, Site-46
Interviewee: SCP-4973
Foreword: After multiple interviews with SCP-4973 that can only be described as 'small talk', the Foundation requested that more serious questions were asked to help the research team.[BEGIN LOG]
SCP-4973: I do enjoy our chats, Doctor. What are we talking about this time?
Dr. █████: The Foundat- er, I would like ask you some more serious questions, if at all possible. All I request is that you take your time with your answers. Now, do you remember the first time you produced obsidian?
SCP-4973: (Places a fist against its mouth, as if it is thinking) Y'know, I don't. I just kind of (Waves hand around) do it. It's like how your blood is surely red, Doctor. Mine is magma.
Dr. █████: Sure. And, do you know at all why we contained you?
SCP-4973: I guess I've never really thought about it. I mean, I can't be the only one here, and you're always talking about 'research' and asking me questions. (Goes silent for a moment before nodding slowly.) I suppose you're just trying to understand something you cannot.
Dr. █████: Something we can't understand? Can you be more specific?
(SCP-4973 shakes its head. Dr. █████ sighs.)
Dr. █████: What happens when your temperature drops too low?
SCP-4973: My blood begins to solidify. It's painful, Doctor, and I know you've done it to me before. I'm conscious the whole time, you know. I understand that it's for the safety of the staff and what not, but you could at least try asking me to do what you need me to next time. It'll save both of us the pain, trust me. (Laughs. Face suddenly drops.) The way you talk about me when you think I'm out of it is really quite rude. I'm not a 'creature' as you like to say. Just because I'm not like you doesn't mean I'm something horrible. (Appears physically agitated after that question. It may have upset itself.)
Dr. █████: I'm sorry. I didn't know. (Looks from his notes to his watch and shakes his head.) I'll make sure it's looked into, but not now. We must move on, as time is short. Do you have any weaknesses you know of?
SCP-4973: Other than the cold? Not really, no. But even if I did, why would I tell you?
Dr. █████: Well, because it's almost impossible to conduct our research without knowing them. We don't want to hurt you, 4973. So I'll ask you again. Do you have any weaknesses?
(SCP-4973 remains silent)
Dr. █████: 4973? (Glances down at its arms. It appears to be piercing the thermal suit, and obsidian is already beginning to appear.)
Dr. █████: This is the last question, 4973. I'm sorry to keep you like this, but I need an answer. Do you have any weaknesses?
(SCP-4973 lets out a low exclamation of pain as its arms fully cast themselves with obsidian. Dr. █████ immediately terminates the interview to stop it from exposing itself to the low temperature, and rushes towards the exit.)
[END LOG]
Closing Statement: SCP-4973 returned back to its normal state shortly after the interview, but interviews were postponed for two (2) weeks after the incident to ensure the safety of Dr. █████.
Interviewer's Note: SCP-4973 appears to be overly-dramatic and sensitive. This must be monitored to prevent any further outbreaks. It also appears to be developing a personality, which shows improvement from our first interview. All questions must be checked over before they are asked in all future interviews to ensure they do not contain any subjects that may upset SCP-4973 based on what we've seen it react to before.
