When Johnny Comes Marching Home

SCP-4570 “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4570-A-D are to be maintained in Site 17’s Anomalous Weapons Locker, with standard safety procedures for antique firearms in place, with each instance of SCP-4570-A-D contained in a separate locker. Regular cleaning with cleaning rod and swab containing solution of ballistic lubricant. Gloves are required for cleaning, as skin to skin contact is to be avoided. Regular psychological evaluations are in place for subjects regularly in contact with instances of SCP-4570A-D or SCP-4570 itself. Access restricted to personnel without Level 2 clearance.

Description: SCP-4570 is a humanoid entity formed after the use of each component of SCP-4570-A-D, measuring 1.955 m in height. Subject appears to be an adolescent male of strong build. Testing has revealed SCP-4570’s intangibility and transparency. SCP-4570 appears to be clothed in apparel consistent with Union cavalry during the American Civil War. Subject has proven cooperative in interviews, displaying knowledge of cavalry movements of the Army of the Potomac. However, subject’s knowledge ceases on April 1, 1865 at the Battle of Five Forks, where the subject claims to have become deceased. When the manifestation of SCP-4570 occurs, the subject or subjects that have made use of SCP-4570-A-D will appear to be clothed in uniforms consistent with Union cavalry of the Army of the Potomac until demanifestation, which occurs when SCP-4570-A-B are reloaded to capacity, and SCP-4570-C-D are sheathed. Subject appears to be sentient, and often offers to assist the researcher or research subject operating SCP-4570-A-D in proper technique.

SCP-4570-A appears to be a Henry Repeating Rifle, in .44 Caliber Rimfire. Rifle accepts non anomalous, if rare, ammunition. Rifle appears in clean and operative condition, despite the dating conducted by Foundation researchers. SCP-4570-B appears to be a Remington New Model Army revolver (Colloquially referred to as the Remington Model 1858), chambered in .44 Caliber, cap and ball, weighing 1.27 kg loaded. Revolver accepts non anomalous ammunition. Revolver appears in clean and operative condition, despite age. When skin contact is made with SCP-4570-A-B, subjects will feel a weak compulsion to collect SCP-4570-A-D. Operation by D-Class personnel and later MTF agents report anomalous qualities beyond compulsion. When fired at a human subject, ammunition will infallibly contact the throat four centimeters above and two centimeters left of center of the upper terminus of the sternum, generally contacting the carotid artery. This anomalous effect is observed on the analogous anatomical parts of nonhuman mammals, extending to amphibians, birds, and reptiles. When fired at nonliving material, bullets impact the aforementioned 2x4cm off of center, regardless of proximity. Ballistics of wounds inflicted are consistent with non anomalous ammunition.

Note: It feels real smooth to fire - like the 45-70 back home, but with less of a kick (referring to SCP-4570-A). Generally for old rifles, the rust and corrosion would make it inoperable, so this was a joy to test. - Agent S.

Note: Again, I can’t believe I got the chance to test this old boy (referring to SCP-4570-B). The history behind these things is legendary. It feels smooth, and just kinda right in your hand. - Agent S_.

SCP-4570-C appears to be a Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, designated M1862, 104 cm long with a 88.5x2.5 cm blade, weighing 1.6 kg with iron scabbard. Saber appears to be in clean and operative condition, despite age. SCP-4570-D appears to be a knife 35.56 cm in length, weighing 0.566 kg, of the style colloquially referred to as a “Bowie Knife”, with brown leather wrapped handle and scabbard. Knife appears to be in clean and operative condition, despite age. When skin contact is made with SCP-4570-C-D, subjects will feel a weak compulsion to collect SCP-457-A-D. Operation by D-Class personnel and later MTF agents report anomalous qualities beyond compulsion. When operated on a living target, wounds inflicted will appear across the throat of the affected individual, the effect extending to reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds. When operated on items that do not fit the above criterion, wounds afflicted appear non-anomalous. SCP-4570-C-D accept standard oil, cleaning, and sharpening tools.

Note: This sword (referring to SCP-4570-C) feels fantastic, like the grip was made for me. Weapons aren’t works of art like these anymore. - Agent S_.
Note: Testing with Agent _ reveals SCP-4570-A-D might have another anomalous effect. That or Agent _ just really likes Civil War weaponry. Testing will continue. I will conduct an interview with SCP-4570 and Agent _ for posterity. - Dr. Maheris.

Note: A real Arkansas toothpick in my hands is like a dream (referring to SCP-4570-A). The weight is fantastic. It feels natural, perfect. I wonder if I can keep this one to replace my Ka-Bar. - Agent S_.
Note: Though I’m sure Agent _ would do excellent work with this knife, the risk of its loss should he become deceased is too great. Denied. - Dr. Maheris.

INTERVIEW LOG-SCP-4570-1

Dr. Maheris (observing): Okay, B_, you’re clear to fire.

Agent S: Thanks, Doc. Ears on. (Agent points out the ear protection is not covering Dr. Maheris’ ears)

Dr. Maheris: Right, thank you.

Agent S then proceeds to fire the sixteen shots of the SCP-4570-A’s magazine before moving on to SCP-4570-B, visibly smiling. Agent S_ repeats the procedure for SCP-4570-B, emptying all six chambers. It should be noted that only one round is required for manifestation of SCP-4570. Agent S then proceeded to draw SCP-4570-C reverently, slashing once at a dummy before placing it carefully on a table. Agent S repeats the process for SCP-4570-D before manifestation of SCP-4570.

SCP-4570: (Appearing in the in front of the table) Hello. Back again, am I? Hello, Doc.

Dr. Maheris: Hello, SCP-4570.

Agent S: (Clothed in Union cavalry uniform, though with noticeable differences. Long leather gloves are of different design, and epaulets denoting the rank of corporal have appeared on the uniform.) Hello, SCP-4570.

SCP-4570: (incredulous) Bill? Bill S?

Agent S_: …You know me somehow?

SCP-4570: Oh, God, it’s good to see you, Bill. (SCP-4570 is visibly excited)

Agent S: I was born in 19__. I’m sorry, SCP-4570.

SCP-4570: You mean you’re Bill’s… That’s a bit to take in. (a minute of silence) You ever heard anything about Bill?

Agent S: Just that he fought for the Union.

SCP-4570: (somewhat emotional) Come back another day, Mr. S, and I’ll tell you about Bill. He was a good man. For now, though, would you gentlemen mind if I took a small rest?

Dr Maheris: Not at all, SCP-4570.

Agent S: (reloading the rifle and revolver) Take your time.

SCP-4570: (as Agent S sheaths the saber) My name is J C. Thank you, from one man to the next.

SCP-4570 demanifests.

Note: Agent S’s effect on SCP-4570 appears to be connected to his family history. Considering classification of Agent S as part of SCP-4570, or at least a PoI-4570. It has also become at least a reasonable hypothesis that Agent S_’s reaction to SCP-4570-A-D is a result of said history, and therefore was affected by the anomalous properties of SCP-4570. - Dr. Maheris
