SCP-3648

Item #: SCP-3648

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3648 is to be kept in one of two (2) connected lead-lined concrete boxes at least 15m x 15m x 7m in size with a single dispenser for food (primarily meat), a continuously running water fountain, and a pedestal with at least fifty (50) grams of uranium on it. The rest of the internal layout should be thin walls of wood for SCP-3648 to roam around. While SCP-3648 is in one of the boxes, the other is to be sealed off, cleaned, and repaired.

Cameras are to be connected to a nearby observation room via a closed circuit. Personnel armed with weapons with armor piercing rounds containing sedatives are to be kept nearby at all times. Should SCP-3648 create SCP-3648-1, SCP-3648 should be herded by itself into the other room while a team wearing stab-resistant body armor and radiation-resistant suits should be sent in to dispose of any and all instances of SCP-3648-1.

In the event that SCP-3648 needs to be transported to a different location, SCP-3648 should be moved to a lead-lined modular cell 6m x 3m x 4m in size and sedated. Once sedated, a small chunk of uranium should be placed in the cell, and the cell should be sealed off. SCP-3648 is to be moved to and from this temporary cell as quickly as possible to decrease the risk of it regaining consciousness in the middle of a facility.

A security team with lethal equipment, including anti-tank weapons and armor piercing ammunition, are to be kept on standby at all times. If SCP-3648 breaches containment, priority should be given to incapacitating it. If incapacitation is impossible, the facility's director may give security teams permission to execute SCP-3648. Should SCP-3648 break containment, the guards on standby should use their armor piercing sedative rounds to knock out the creature and put it into a temporary sleep, at which point the guards should drag it back to one of its containment cells.

Description: SCP-3648 appears to be a semi-humanoid creature about four (4) meters tall with a tail and horns, as well as spines running down its back. Its skin is made of scales which are immune to normal bullets, and it has teeth long claws made of a material similar to steel. It will try to sharpen these claws and, should one break off, said claw will become SCP-3648-1. SCP-3648 is drawn to radiation, and becomes more passive while any sort of radiation is nearby. However, should it leave a radioactive area, it will become extremely aggressive and attack any creature it sees.

Any images of the creature rapidly degrade, meaning that footage and photographs cannot be saved for any period of time beyond a few minutes. Theories about why this occurs include some undiscovered form of radiation, psychic abilities or being able to influence space-time. Tests should be carried out to find the root cause of this degradation.

SCP-3648-1 is, as previously mentioned, one of SCP-3648's claws. SCP-3648-1 vibrates very slightly, creating a low-pitched noise and allowing it to move slowly. However, should any live creature that is not SCP-3648 come nearby (within approximately one (1) meter), the claw will act like a spring and lunge at the creature, often severely injuring or even killing it. Once this is done, SCP-3648-1 will be permanently inactive.

Mass sightings of SCP-3648 began during cleanup efforts just after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. However, excerpts from a document from the Soviet government written in December 1983 demonstrate that these were not the first sightings of the creature, and it had been a mystery to the local government officials at the time. The excerpts are included below:

Excerpts from Document ███-███, Provided by the Soviet Union in 198█

On top of possible safety violations, we have received reports of a mysterious creature in the area of the town of Pripyat. So far, we've collected little data on it and suspect it to be some sort of wildlife, possibly mutated by some sort of contamination from the power plant. I've advised Alexei ██████ about the situation, and he believes we should assess the reactors for any leaks…

…I have seen a report about the creature mentioned earlier in this document attacking fishermen and wounding one of them. They described it as "about four (4) meters long, with four legs, a tail and sharp claws that tore through flesh." This makes me believe it is some sort of creature mutated by the waters of the cooling pond, as the fishermen were in that area.

…I believe that policy changes should [not] be implemented… in regards to this supposed creature. An inspection should be carried out on the reactors and the radioactivity of the cooling pond, however.

Discovery: SCP-3648's capture was a part of a cooperation with the Ukrainian government to search the area around Chernobyl for any anomalies. After being located in January 2004, efforts were made to understand its behavior. Finally, in 20██, a retrieval team was sent into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (approximately three (3) kilometers from the reactor). The team initially tried using sedative darts, but these proved ineffective due to SCP-3648's scales. SCP-3648 retaliated and caused █ casualties before it ran through through a wall of an apartment building, collapsing the wall and floor above. A piece of debris struck SCP-3648 on the head at a high velocity, incapacitating the creature temporarily. While it was incapacitated, it was extracted via helicopter. The incident was explained as a group of tourists venturing into a dilapidated building, causing a minor collapse and injuring one of the tourists badly enough that they needed to be rescued via helicopter.

Addendum 3648.1
A set of new security equipment has been procured, allowing for non-lethal containment of SCP-3648 in the case of a breach. This equipment includes: armor-piercing rounds with tips containing sedatives, radiation-resistant suits, and stab-resistant body armor. Containment measures for SCP-3648 have been updated accordingly.

Addendum 3648.2
Following a containment breach in December 20██, SCP-3648 was injured by the accidental use of lethal armor-piercing ammunition. Following this injury, it displayed accelerated healing abilities. All wounds were fully healed only five days after the injury occurred.

Addendum 3648.3
An interview with one of the two fishermen attacked by SCP-3648 in 1983 was conducted by Dr. Boris ████████. Parts of the interview were conducted in Russian and Ukrainian, and have been translated. This has been noted in the interview below.

Interviewer: Dr. Boris ████████

Interviewee: Anonymous SCP-3648 attack survivor (henceforth referred to as "S")

Foreword: S is questioned about the 1983 attack and the circumstances surrounding it.

[BEGIN LOG]

Dr. ████████: [S], do you know why you're here?

S: It's something about the incident in 1983, where my buddy and I were fishing and we were attacked by a monster.

Dr. ████████: You seem very uncomfortable about this subject, [S].

S: Well, you can chalk that up to the language barrier. (S laughs)

Dr. ████████: (In Russian) Would you prefer this? (In Ukrainian) Or perhaps this?

S: (In Ukrainian) As much as I'd like to speak in my native tongue, I believe it would be best if we talked in English.

Dr. ████████: (In English again) Alright then. So, tell me, [S], what happened on that night in 1983?

S: My friend and I were fishing near the cooling pond for the Chernobyl power plant. We heard some strange noises off towards the shore. Our boat was a small rowing one, so it took us a few minutes to get a decent line of sight with the shore. It was night, after all.

Dr. ████████: (Writing) Sighting was at… night. Okay then. What happened next?

S: My friend shouted over to the shore. He asked who was there, and there was just sort of a strange silence. The animals nearby had stopped making noise. I told my friend I felt a bit nauseous and leaned over the side of the boat to vomit. Then I saw a reflection in the water, a strange sort of pale color. It was moving quickly towards us. I looked up and saw some sort of four-legged… (Disgusted) monstrosity with claws at least fifty centimeters long. The creature itself must've been four meters long, if you included its tail. I gasped in shock, and my friend dropped his fishing rod to grab his knife.

Dr. ████████: And?

S: It splashed down into the water next to the boat, hanging on with its claws. The claws began to tear through the wood and it slid down. However, it managed to pull itself onto the boat. My friend stabbed at it with his knife, which made a slight sort of noise as if metal was hitting metal. The creature quickly attacked my friend, slashing upwards. This left a great gash from about the lower right side of his torso - the left side if you looked at him from the front, just to be clear - to the upper left side of his chest. (Motions across his torso to his chest to demonstrate the wound) It wasn't terribly deep, but it was certainly painful. The creature saw my friend fall back, impaled some fish from the bucket of what we'd caught, and then hopped off after showing the fish into its maw.

Dr. ████████: Was there anything noteworthy about the wound, maybe how your friend felt afterwards?

S: I felt nauseous just before the attack, but by the time we reached the shore, we both felt extremely nauseous.

Dr. ████████: Do you have any idea why that happened?

S: Upon reflection, it may have been due to the creature dousing us in possibly radioactive water from the power plant.

Dr. ████████: (Writing) Why thank you, [S]. That will be all. You may go.

(A chair is heard moving, and a door opens and shuts as S leaves the interview room)

Dr. ████████: (In Russian) What a fool I was to think that he'd given all of the information to the government officials! This was the Soviet Union, after all. If they'd mentioned the nausea, especially if they'd already realized the fact that it could've been due to radioactivity, I don't know what the officials would've done to them. (In English) Ending log, and submitting notes.
