William K Gray: Brainstorming and ideas for the broken Library concept.
Listing of Ideas surrounding my "Broken Library" SCP concept.
This Library is in a completely abandoned town. (Still have not decided on a location.) The Foundation does their best to figure out where the inhabitants of the town went, but their efforts are to no avail. Upon finding the library they quickly discover it is populated with a library staff team that do not have any identification of any kind. As far as the Foundation knows, the library staff only exist in the library. A base of operations is quickly assembled inside the ghost town and exploration into the library begins.
Bullet point ideas below for simplicity
- The Library never ends? The library has seemingly infinite floors that descend by a spiral staircase. This staircase is poorly illuminated and anyone trying to peer over the rails to see how far down it goes, can hardly see a few floors down before it becomes to dark to see. While the library has hundreds or maybe thousands of levels. It does have an end. Another interesting idea I had that should be pointed out is that the library will expand to be larger and larger the further down. While the rooms on the first floor match the geometry of the building, the lower floors become cavernously massive. The farthest distance ever dug down is the Kola Borehole which was 40,230 feet! (12,262 meters.) It took the people working on it almost 20 damn years to dig that far. This library will go much farther than that.
- As for books that are contained within the shelves of the library The books are going to be important, but not until the lower floors of the library. Initially( Within the first 100 floors or so.) all books will be catagorized by catagorey and titles by alphabetical order. Past 100 floors and books that are on the shelves have never been written by a real author and many of the books are cognitohazards.
- The Library is "broken" This idea is the whole main focus of the SCP. The library on the first floor is normal. (Aside from the library being the only populated building in a ghost town.) Inside the staff are friendly to all, but it is quickly realized that the staff are not sentient. They work like mindless drones and only stop working to answer any questions they are asked. The staff however cannot answer any questions that are not about books or some other question regarding the library. All of the books contained within the first one hundred floors have little to no issues. Books are organized by genre and alphabetical order. A large variety of books are contained within the library but there is nothing out of the ordinary until it is noticed during exploration that at floors lower than thirty, small problems arise. Books have minor typos and are no longer longer getting organized properly. Other minor problems include a lack of cleanliness both in the library and the staff members. Past floor eighty the staff begin to also suffer from a variety of problems almost like how the books have become increasingly messed up. Staff become lazy and some have even stopped working, some appear to have significant injuries and major psychological problems. Overall, the place only gets worse. Past floor one hundred all staff are considered hostile and the threat of books being cognitohazards comes to light.
- What would make this SCP dangerous? The library staff are the main threat. They become hostile entities past floor one hundred and though they can be dispatched with standard weapons. There is a unknown amount of library staff on each floor and just simply eliminating everyone is not exactly feasible. At certain points books will also become dangerous or maybe even helpful cognitohazards. Because the library goes for possibly thousands of floors down, the dangers of exploring the lowest levels are extreme.
- What is the object class? This SCP is Safe for sure, but if at all possible I would like to list it as Neutralized. Even though this is my first SCP, I would love to make a well written document fully explaining how the foundation explores the library all the way down to the last floor. If I cannot fulfill that wish, then the object is Safe. The Librarians mentioned above have no care to leave the library, and even though the Foundation sets up a perimeter defense around the outside of the library to prepare for a possible breach. Through all of the Foundations time with this SCP, they can confirm the Librarians do not go outside the main door. The foundation may likely even consider making that ghost town into a base of operations to support the many exploration missions they will undertake while exploring the library.
- How does one enter the library? The library itself is a normal building on the outside. Entrance is as easy as walking through the front door. Exit from the building is as easy as walking out of the exit doorway on the first floor.
- Containment This one is important.. Containment of this library is rather simple though. I had imagined that the library is located in a small rural abandoned town, with no explanation as to how this town became abandoned so civilians are not likely to enter the library or the town at all since it is so out of the way of any other populated area. The foundation will establish a small base and use it as a point to prepare teams to enter the library for exploration. Therefore securing both the library and the town from a breach or attack by a group of interest should one ever occur.
- Exploration of the library I really want to elaborate heavily on how the foundation explores this library!! My ideas of how this will get done is with drones initially. The foundation has no idea what is in there or what happens as you go down the many levels. So a few different kind of drones will be the first to go inside save for the Foundation Agent who reported the existence of the SCP. Very quickly however, the foundation comes to understand the dangers of the library. A second phase of exploration is enabled and small groups of D-class personnel will be used to do the first manned explorations while being prepared to spend days inside. I really really like the idea of the need for specialized MTF to explore the libraries deepest levels.. But I still don't fully understand the rules of making a MTF team. So I will get back to this
- Infohazards, memetics, cognitohazards and all the other fun stuff! I love the idea of this library getting more and more dangerous, the lower and lower anyone goes. So what better than all the books in the library becoming deadly infohazards that can make a man blind just by reading the cover of the book! There can be many other extremley dangerous infohazards etc, or even some "helpful" ones.
