Special Containment Procedures: Specimens of SCP-###-1 are to be located and terminated as soon as possible. No more than 10 specimens of SCP-###-2 are to be held in containment at any time. Specimens are to be held in otherwise completely empty containment cells equipped with Scranton Reality Anchors at Site-██. Containment cells must be at least 25m apart. Specimens of SCP-###-2 must not come into contact with humans at any time, except in the case of testing. At least four extra containment cells should be operational at all times so that the specimens of SCP-###-2 may be relocated for maintenance and inspection of containment cells. All testing of SCP-###-2 must have written approval by no less than two level 3 personnel prior to the testing date. All other specimens must be terminated.

As of incident-###-█, Personnel working within close proximity to SCP-### instances must undergo monthly psychological examinations to ensure their minds have not been affected by the SCP-### instances. Those that have been affected must be quarantined for no less than two months to determine if they will become instances of SCP-###-2. Those that do not become instances of SCP-###-2 will still need treatment to become functional once again. Amnestics have proven to be an ineffective form of treatment, but regular therapy has proven moderately successful in cases where the mind has only been minimally affected. Personnel working in close proximity to SCP-### instances must be reassigned to new posts and new personnel must be brought in every six months to minimize risk of over-exposure. Even after re-assignment, personnel must undergo psychological examinations for two months.

Any and all personnel at site-██ that develops a sudden or intense interest in dancing must be quarantined as per the containment procedures above.

By unanimous vote of the O5 council, under absolutely no circumstances are any reality benders either working for the foundation, or in Foundation custody allowed to be within 100m of any SCP-### instance, nor stationed at site-██.

Description: Instances of SCP-### are reality bending entities that are best described as several shadows of people in contorted positions overlaying each other in the same three-dimensional space. These shadows constantly “dance” as their appendages flail around and their bodies twist. Each instance of SCP-###-2 have between 4 and 8 shadows at any given time and each instance of SCP-###-1 have between 7 and 15. Inside these shadows is a small core of human tissue that levitates. The cores are nebular in shape and usually weigh between 10-12 kilograms. The shadows created by SCP-### are either an illusion or are intangible, but the cores are material and can be destroyed, and if destroyed, terminate the entity.

The power of SCP-### specimens’ reality bending ability is highly dependent on distance to the entity. For SCP-###-2 instances, the maximum the noticeable area of effect is 10m and for SCP-###-1 instances the maximum the noticeable area of effect is 70m. Inside the area of effect, reality is warped at random. A few patterns are common within the area of effect, such as light being distorted to change and oversaturate colors of objects, smooth surfaces becoming rough, and rhythmic loud, low frequency sound waves from all directions manifest. More detailed accounts of what occurs within the area of effect can be found in interview logs ###-5, 6, 11, and 15.

Despite the fact that instances of SCP-### tend to destroy most anything around them, when a human enters their area of influence, instances will instead attempt to transform the human into another instance of SCP-###. Only if the human puts up significant resistance will the instance attempt to eliminate the human. The transformation is a three step process. First, the instance will make the human have an uncontrollable interest in dancing and a strong urge to dance at all times. This effect is not memetic, as the SCP-### instance will change the brain structure of the human to achieve this. Secondly, the instance will give the human low-level reality bending abilities and a desire to become an instance of SCP-###. How the instance gives the human reality bending abilities is unknown as most reality benders are not capable of doing this. Once this step has been achieved the human can effectively be considered an instance of SCP-### as the last step is to transform into a full instance of SCP-###. This is completed by the human either with help from the original instance or on their own using their newfound abilities. The time it takes for this process to occur is heavily dependent on proximity to the SCP-### instance, with variation from 18 months as in the case of [DATA EXPUNGED, SEE INCIDENT REPORT-###-█], to less than a second as in the case of an instance getting close enough to touch a human subject.

People who had no prior reality bending abilities become instances of SCP-###-2 and people who had reality bending abilities prior to becoming an instance of SCP-### become an instance of SCP-###-1. Instances of SCP-###-2 and SCP-###-1 are relatively similar, but instances of SCP-###-1 pose a significantly greater threat. The main differences between them are that SCP-###-2 instances retain the intelligence level of a cat whereas SCP-###-1 instances appear to retain sentience. Furthermore, the reality bending abilities of SCP-###-1 instances are significantly more developed. To illustrate the danger SCP-###-1 instances pose some examples of things SCP-###-1 instances have done during Incident-###-1 are included below.

  • A response team located an instance of SCP-###-1 near a collapsed building and the team fired upon the entity. Video footage shows the tracer rounds fired from the response team’s guns changed trajectory as they flew through the air to the point that they missed the entity entirely, despite the fact that it remained stationary. The entity then appeared to animate pieces of rubble into what survivors called “golems”. These golems attacked the response team and appeared unaffected by small arms fire. After a 3 minutes, the entity fled the area. The golems became inanimate once they were outside of the instance’s area of effect and collapsed. Only 20% of the response team survived the fight, and all survivors were badly wounded.
  • An instance of SCP-###-1 in a parking lot spotted helicopters operated by the US Air Force approaching its location. It preceded to levitate between 30 and 40 cars into the air and twisted them into spikes. It then launched the spikes at high speed toward the helicopters with great accuracy, destroying many of them, and forcing the others to retreat. Apparently it had recognized the threat the helicopters posed before being exposed to them, suggesting that instances retain at least some of their memories after being transformed into an instance of SCP-###-1.
  • As the town of ██████████ was being cleared of SCP-### instances an instance of SCP-###-1 was spotted fleeing and heading towards ██████████████ village. It was observed teleporting from one spot within its area of effect to another multiple times in one second, allowing it to effectively move at speeds up to 125 m/s (450 km/hr). It was eliminated before it reached the village by an AC-130 gunship operated by the US Air Force. The crew of the gunship, when interviewed, stated that eliminating the instance was particularly difficult, not only because it was moving so fast, but because it could change direction instantly as it did not have to overcome momentum. See interview logs ###-20 through 24 for more details.

Discovery: SCP-### was discovered on █/██/20██ in ██████████, Pennsylvania, when the nearby Air Force base, ████ ████████ requested foundation assistance in containing an outbreak of “monsters”. Approximately 30% of the town had been infected by the time the military had intervened, and by the time the outbreak was fully contained, approximately 55% had been infected, 30% had evacuated, and the remaining 15% were either confirmed to have died in the chaos or reported missing. This outbreak is considered incident-###-1. Of the recorded four SCP-###-1 instances in the town, two were terminated, but the other two escaped the area. It is estimated that several SCP-###-2 instances also escaped before the situation could be brought under control.

The survivors as well as those that lived in the nearby village of ██████████████ were given class B amnestics. A cover story that a massive landslide had occurred in the town was fabricated, and that the nearby [DATA EXPUNGED] plant’s storage tanks were breached in the disaster, rendering the area unsafe. The latter part was added so that the foundation could do an independent investigation into why this outbreak had happened as well as ensure the eradication of SCP-### instances in the area.

On █/██/20██, guards who were stationed at a checkpoint on a road leading to the town detained Owen ████████, a 1█ year old teenager with low level reality bending abilities. Owen walked up to them and claimed to be responsible for the outbreak of SCP-###. Below is an interview with him that sheds light on the origin of SCP-###.

Interview log-###-25:

Interviewed: Owen ████████

Interviewer: Field Researcher Dr. ███

<BEGIN LOG>

Camera footage begins. Owen is handcuffed to a chair which is bolted the ground and is sitting at a small table. Behind him is a portable Scranton reality anchor that was brought in for the interview. Dr. ███ enters the room and sits down across from him.

Dr. ███: Hello… Owen, is it?

Owen: Yes sir.

Dr. ███: Okay. So Owen, you claim to be the creator of the anomaly?

Owen: No, not the creator, but I came up with the idea… kind of. We weren’t trying to hurt anyone, though! I swear! The whole thing was an accident, like when you think you’ve put out a campfire, but it reignites and the whole forest goes up in flames.

Dr. ███: I see. Now, you say “We”. Who else was with you?

Owen: M-my brother and some of his friends.

Dr. ███: how many friends?

Owen: Four, I think? No, no wait it was five because two of them were twins.

Dr. ███: Okay, thank you. Why were you in ██████████?

Owen: Because my brother had wanted to meet up with them, specifically so that we could mess around with our powers. ██████████ is essentially nowhereville. It’s in the middle of the woods, is relatively far away from other towns, and has a population of, like, █ thousand. Maybe █ at most.

Dr. ███: Are you saying that your brother’s friends were reality benders as well?

Owen: I… uh… guess that’s a good term for it. Yeah.

Dr. ███: How does your brother know them?

Owen: He met them on the internet. They are all part of some chat group called Gamers against Weed, I think.

Dr. ███: I am familiar with the organization.

Owen: You are? Really?

Dr. ███: Yes. Can you tell me how the anomaly was created?

Owen: Oh, uh, y-yeah. We had been in the town for one night and all we had done was stupid shit, like making characters in movies take their clothes off, or how we made the one statue in front of the library dab, and other dumb things like that. At some point we went back to the motel we were staying at and we were all bored. Then I got an idea of something we could do. I called it “deep fried dancing”. All it was was doing dances like fortnite dances, or Oppa Gangnam style, or other stupid meme dances while blaring music and distorting the light around you so it looked like a deep fried meme. That’s all it was intended to be. It wasn’t intended to turn into… this.

Dr. ███: How did it turn into this?

Owen: Well, uh, everyone liked the idea at first, but after 15 minutes we all got bored of it, except one of my brother’s friends. I think his name is Gary. He was drunk when we were doing it and found it the funniest thing in the world. Even after we stopped he asked us to keep going. He didn’t want to do it himself, he just wanted to watch us doing it. At a certain point he started to get annoying, so we decided to go out to lunch and leave him at the motel. We got his girlfriend to stay with him to make sure he didn’t get into trouble and we promised to bring them food when we got back. When we did actually get back, Gary’s girlfriend was deep fried dancing. We found it weird because she was the first one to get bored of it. We asked her if she was doing it to appease Gary, but she said that she just really enjoyed it. She refused to stop and continued throughout the day. At one point she literally passed out, I guess because dancing is a lot of exercise, but as soon as she woke up she started dancing again.

Dr. ███: You didn’t call for help when your friend passed out?

Owen: She was only out for like 10 minutes and we were afraid of calling 911. We knew that the government is afraid of people like us and didn’t know if they would arrest us when they arrived or what would happen. It’s not like we weren’t worried or didn’t care! It’s just that calling the police isn’t really a safe option for us!

Dr. ███: I understand. Please continue.

Owen takes a few seconds to regain his composure before continuing.

Owen: Once… once Gary’s girlfriend passed out we all confronted him and demanded he tell us why she was suddenly acting so weird. He said he… just… made her want to dance. I don’t know how he even did it. I didn’t think it was possible for us to control others’ minds. I don’t think anyone else knew that either considering the looks on their faces. I knew Gary was a little scummy, but I didn’t peg him as someone who would just fuck with other people’s brains, even if he was drunk. We asked him if he had ever done something like this before and he said this was the first time he had even attempted it. Honestly though, I think that was a lie. Brains are really fucking complex. If this was his first time, he would probably would have fucked it up instead of making her do exactly what he wanted her to. There is no way he has never done something like this before.

Dr. ███: I understand that learning your friend is willing to control other’s minds is upsetting, but please try to remain on topic. What happened next?

Owen: O-Oh, yeah, sorry. We told him to bring her back to normal, and he was going to do so, but he said that she needed to be awake so that he could be sure he was doing it right. Like I said before, once she woke up she immediately started to dance again, and wouldn’t stop when we asked her to. Apparently Gary couldn’t fix her if she was moving so much so we had to hold her down. Gary’s girlfriend was small, and already overexerted herself dancing, but despite that it took two people to actually restrain her. Gary put his hands on her head and then… then…

Owen stops speaking. Several seconds pass before Dr. ███ speaks.

Dr. ███: What happens?

Owen: We… We fucked it up. She was struggling with all her might while she was held and she was shaking her head constantly. Like, madly shaking it. I think that while Gary was trying to change her brain back to normal, because she was shaking her head so wildly, he… accidentally changed other parts of her brain as well.

Dr. ███: What do you mean by that?

Owen: She started screaming nonsense. Like at first it was “let me go” and “just let me dance”, but then it changed into random words, like how people sometimes say strings of random words when they have a stroke. After that she just started making noises, like it sounded like she was speaking English, but the sounds she was making didn’t form into words. Then she just started yelling and screaming at the top of her lungs. She… sounded like she was in pain. That was before she shrunk her arm though.

Dr. ███: Shrunk… her arm?

Owen: Yeah. It’s the best way I can put it. She started changing herself. She shrunk her arm so she could pull it away from my brother and she… popped her other arm off… It wasn’t bloody or anything, it just… came off, kind of like how bubbles come off the wand when you blow them, if that makes sense. She started running over toward the door, and actually blasted it off its hinges with her mind, but David, one of the twins, made the floor beneath her slippery so she fell down. She didn’t hit the ground though, she just started floating. One of the other guys, Dan, approached her so he could grab her leg and it just… retracted into her body. He moved forward and grabbed her center body and… I don’t know what happened. Dan just started roaring.

Dr. ███: Roaring?

Owen: Yeah, just… screaming. He let go of Gary’s girlfriend and started flailing around. He twisted around and looked into my eyes and… I think she fucked with his mind just like Gary did to her. Dan’s expression was not… human at all. I turned around to the window and blew it open, just like Gary’s girlfriend did with the door. Gary was closer to the window than I was and climbed out of it before me. While he was climbing out I turned around and looked at everyone. I… saw Dan first. He had fucked up his own body like Gary’s girlfriend had. He didn’t have legs or a head anymore and the only reason I knew it was him was because he was still wearing his shirt. Dan was floating toward the twins. David was just spazzing out. It looked like he was having a seizure or something but he was still standing up. David’s brother was throwing stuff at Dan and was trying to run away, but had backed himself into the corner of the room. Then I looked at my brother… and at first I thought… I thought he was ok… but… that was because I didn’t… see her at first…

Dr. ███: You are referring to Gary’s girlfriend?

Owen: Yeah… She had kinda blended into the wall. I don’t know if she had skin anymore, but whatever it was, was the same pale color the walls. She wasn’t even human anymore. Neither was Dan, I guess, but she was totally unrecognizable. All she was was a glob of flesh, kinda shaped like a water molecule, and about the size of a soccer ball. I don’t even know where the rest of her went. She was right in front of my brother, right in front of his face, just floating there. I saw his eyes… he was not… not… he wasn’t…

At this point Owen started to hyperventilate. Medical staff was called in to calm him down. After 15 minutes the interview was resumed at the request of the subject.

Dr. ███: Are you sure you want to continue?

Owen: Yeah.

Dr. ███: Absolutely sure?

Owen: Yes.

Dr. ███: Alright. So you were saying that… you and Gary were exiting the motel via a window. Once Gary got through, what happened?

Owen: I… I threw myself out. I had to go either left or right because of a big stone wall with wrought iron spikes on the top, so I chose left at random. I ran blindly I guess because I ran right into a wrought iron gate that was locked. I could’ve broken the lock with my powers, but I was so panicked I just turned around and started running the other way. As I was running, in front of me, someone, came out of the window I broke. At first I thought they were fine because they… looked human. All I saw was their silhouette, and I swear it was shaped like a person1! Then the silhouette disappeared right in front of me and all that was left was just another glob of flesh. It was shaped like a… jellyfish I guess… or maybe a short, fat mushroom. I don’t even know who it was, or… used to be I guess. I screamed at it to stay back, but it kept floating towards me. As it moved it looked like everything around it was melting and it made loud thumping sound like an irregular heartbeat. I… I thought I was going to die or… turn into one of those fucking things.

Dr. ███: How did you escape?

Owen: As I backed away from it I realized if I kept backing up that I would eventually hit the gate from earlier and it would get to me. That realization gave me enough focus to actually use my powers. I tore one of the spikes off of the wall and held it in the air with my powers. Even then I was still begging it to stop and go away. Only when I turned around and realized the gate was right behind me did I launch the spike at it. The spike tore straight through it and it fell to the ground with a splat. It started convulsing like it was going to throw up and made a gurgling noise, and then it stopped moving altogether. I stared at it for another 20 seconds before I realized I heard more thumping coming from the direction of our motel room. I finally got the peace of mind to actually break the lock to the gate. I opened it and ran. I ran out of town. I ran until I got to ██████████████. When I saw all the helicopters and heard explosions I ran further. I slept on the side of the freeway that night and when the next day came I kept running.

Dr. ███: If you ran so far away, why did you come back?

Owen: I… feel responsible for it. I know it’s not my fault, it’s fucking Gary’s fault, but I had the original idea. If I never suggested it, none of this would have happened, literally none of it. Plus, I killed one of them. One of my brother’s friends, or maybe even my brother, I don’t know. I can’t just… live with that. Also, if I tell you guys, maybe it can be helpful or something, I don’t know.

Dr. ███: Trust me Owen, it was very helpful. Thank you for your time.

<END LOG>

Final notes: When SCP-### first appeared, there were four SCP-###-1 instances. Owen stated that there were seven total people in his group at the town of ██████████, all of which were reality benders. Of those seven, Owen was not infected and reportedly eliminated an instance before it could fully develop. From this data it is not only possible, but probable that the individual known as Gary evaded the developing SCP-###-1 instances and avoided being infected by SCP-### entirely. I recommend that efforts be made to locate Gary and detain him. On a different note, Owen seems traumatized by the event. I recommend that he be amnestized so that he can forget his involvement in the incident, and so he does not have to live with the memory of his brother being turned into an instance of SCP-###-1.
-Dr. ███

Addendum: After his interview, Owen ████████ was administered class C amnesiacs and kept at site-██. After the events of incident-###-█, and containment procedures were updated, Owen was relocated to site-██ where he currently resides. The individual described as “Gary” by Owen ████████ was identified as Gary ████ who lived in an apartment in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gary’s home was raided by MTF Pi-1 (“City Slickers”) who located him within his residence, but failed to capture him as he ran into his bedroom and disappeared. Upon entering his bedroom no anomalies were present, other than the fact that his bedroom window was open on a day in which the temperature was significantly below freezing. Also of note is that Gary ████’s apartment is on the fifth story of the building. More information can be found in Incident Report-###-4. Gary ████ has been declared POI-###.
