An instance of SCP-XXXX within SCP-XXXX-1

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-1 are to be held within an unmarked crate with the dimensions 1 X 1 X 0.5 m and placed at site [redacted] storage facility for the foreseeable future.

Description: SCP-XXXX appears to be a woman's ring that is approximately 16.9 mm in diameter and roughly weighs 6 grams positioned vertically inside of SCP-XXXX-1. Around its edges, SCP-XXXX contains eleven diamonds of a blue color and ten diamonds of a white color all of similar size. Two of these eleven blue diamonds are positioned adjacent to each other surrounded by a repeating pattern of a single white diamond followed by a single blue diamond of which cover the entire outer edge of SCP-XXXX. Due to the ring's complete outer edge being covered in diamonds of a similar size, it is impossible to discern between an upper shank or a lower shank; however, it can be argued that the two adjacent diamonds of a blue color may provide a point of reference due to its irregularity in the surrounding pattern. The band of the ring appears to be made out of a stainless steel but require further testing to confirm. Due to the band's poor quality of symmetrical design as well as dents and inconsistent settings, it appears that SCP-XXXX was created without the use of advanced tools and most accurately fashioned and designed by hand.

SCP-XXXX-1 appears to be a ring box with the dimensions 6 x 5 x 4 cm with an approximate weight of 55 grams. SCP-XXXX-1 opens and closes due to a metallic hinge similar in quality to SCP-XXXX's metallic band, insinuating both metals being of the same origin. SCP-XXXX-1 has an exterior and interior wrapped in what appears to be a black velvet material of unknown origin with the exception of the upper inside of the ring box being wrapped in a white silk-like material of unknown origin. Further testing of the material of the ring box is required.

Exposure to SCP-XXXX causes subjects to experience changes in personality and mood that will eventually metastasize into suicidal tendencies. These effects have only been observed in men among the age of 20-26; however, this is believed to be an inaccurate testing pool as only men of that age purchased SCP-XXXX for ownership in the attempts of gifting SCP-XXXX to an individual of whom they were currently in a romantic relationship with. There are cases of men fitting this description not being affected regardless of exposure to SCP-XXXX and there are currently no cases of women experiencing such symptoms. Given the low testing pool and scattered correlation between exposure of SCP-XXXX and the experience of such symptoms, further testing will be required.

Addendum: Circumstances of retrieval: SCP-XXXX was located at the address [Redacted] inside of an old Pawn Shop of mediocre standards. SCP-XXXX was positioned vertically inside of SCP-XXXX-1 and displayed inside of a clear acrylic display case and priced to be 1,200 USD despite its poor quality of craftsmanship. The SCP Foundation became aware of its significance after a dramatic rise in suicides among men between the age of 20-26 within the city of [redacted]. All of whom having bought SCP-XXXX a week prior to their suicide only to return to the establishment to sell it back to the Pawn Shop for an incredibly low price. Shortly after returning SCP-XXXX inside of SCP-XXXX-1 to said Pawn Shop, all subjects committed suicide leaving behind notes that described their intentions of wishing to live in a better world.

All male Pawn Shop employees of whom were exposed to SCP-XXXX, presumably by holding or positioning SCP-XXXX, experienced none of the same symptoms as the individuals who bought and returned SCP-XXXX. It is important to also note that all cases of symptoms only occurred between men, seemingly having no affect on women regardless of their duration or means of exposure.

INTERVIEW AT TIME OF RETRIEVAL

Interviewed: Female employee of the pawn shop [Redacted]
Interviewer: Lead Researcher Daniel Williams

Foreword: Interview took place at the counter of [redacted] as Lead Researcher Daniel Williams posed as an interested customer wishing to purchase SCP-XXXX in order to possess the item under the SCP Foundation's control.

<Begin Log>

Interviewer: Hello Miss, I'm Danny, and I was wondering if I could purchase the white and blue ring in the clear acrylic case near the back of the store.

Person: Oh! Of course! Follow me.

Interviewer: I was also wondering if you knew anything about the ring, where it came from or who made it?

Person: Hmmm… No, not really. We get a lot of random items from desperate people who've sold us stuff for quick cash. Though, now that I think about it, we've sold this same ring several times before but it always seems to find its way back here. (laughs)

Interviewer: It does?

Person: Yeah, it's like kind of sad, really. Guys will come in here looking for a ring to give to their girl or whatever and then after a few days, just come back and give us the ring back, practically for free. They just don't want it anymore, I guess. The first time it happened I figured the dude got dumped but then it happens again and again with more people who buy the ring coming back. Weird, right? I really don't see the need in getting overpriced rings though, personally I'm more of a pizza and milkshake kind of girl.

Interviewer: I see… the people who normally buy this ring, do you know if they were all in a relationship?

Person: Oh, yeah definitely. Every single guy who came in here who bought that ring came right up to the counter talking about how they needed the best ring for the love of their life because (exaggerated mocking tone) the best girl ever deserves the best ring ever. (Normal tone) Ugh, cheesy, right? Anyways, it's gonna be twelve eighty-seven after tax.

<End Log>

Closing Statement: Lead Researcher Daniel Williams bought the ring shortly after and returned to Foundation Site [redacted]

Addendum: Material testing of SCP-XXXX SCP-XXXX has undergone additional testing to discover anomalous properties at the request of Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams. The additional testing of SCP-XXXX has caused several assumptions about the creation of SCP-XXXX to be altered due to its incredible levels of durability. It was originally assumed that "due to the band's poor quality of symmetrical design as well as dents and inconsistent settings, it appears that SCP-XXXX was created without the use of advanced tools and most accurately fashioned and designed by hand."

For reasons unknown, regardless of the amount of energy or heat introduced, SCP-XXXX always remains to be an exact temperature of 23 °C. The anomalous property was originally noticed at the time of original temperature measurement when over the course of an hour at every 10 minute interval Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams attempted to measure the surface temperature of SCP-XXXX using a non-contact infrared thermometer of standard SCP Foundation design. At each measurement interval, SCP-XXXX remained to be exactly 23 °C.

This one hour long, 10 minute interval average temperature measurement was repeated an additional 3 more times with various non-contact infrared thermometers of standard SCP Foundation design to rule out faulty equipment. Even with the introduction of new equipment, this anomalous property continued and at each measurement interval SCP-XXXX remained to be exactly 23 °C.

At the request of Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams, further heat testing, including durability testing was assigned and SCP-XXXX was temporarily relocated to [redacted] to undergo said testing. The written reports are as follows:

Written Report from lab [Redacted]

Heat Testing: Upon [redacted] receiving SCP-XXX for testing. We began with the instructed recommendations written out by Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams to test for anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX relative to its inability to retain added energy (I.e. Increased temperature) and the properties it has demonstrated relative to its homeostasis.

Introduction of heat from equipment [redacted] began at [redacted] and ceased at [redacted] for a period of 30 minutes in duration. Despite SCP-XXXX's exposure to the prolonged heat source of 500 °C, there was no immediate change in surface temperature of SCP-XXXX and it remained at a constant temperature of exactly 23 °C. Numerous tests continued with the following data.

Duration of Exposure Heat Introduced SCP-XXXX Surface Temperature
30 minutes 500 °C 23 °C
60 minutes 500 °C 23 °C
120 minutes 500 °C 23 °C
30 minutes 1500 °C 23 °C
60 minutes 1500 °C 23 °C
120 minutes 1500 °C 23 °C
30 minutes 2500 °C 23 °C
60 minutes 2500 °C 23 °C
120 minutes 2500 °C 23 °C
30 minutes 4000 °C 23 °C
60 minutes 4000 °C 23 °C
120 minutes 4000 °C 23 °C
30 minutes 5500 °C 23 °C
120 minutes 5500 °C 23 °C

Given the latest heat testing, lab [Redacted] has concluded that SCP-XXXX is unresponsive to all forms of heat or introduction of energy. Considering the SCP-XXXX withstood temperatures the equivalent of the surface of the sun, lab [Redacted] has ceased all future heating attempts.

SCP-XXXX has no obvious mechanisms of homeostasis but persist to remain at the exact temperature of 23 °C. It is also interesting to note that there was no change of any kind that occurred to SCP-XXXX and further requests for Durability testing has been motioned by lab [Redacted]. Scientists at lab [redacted] have also noticed that areas immediately underneath or around SCP-XXXX remain to be heated as if there were no object blocking the introduction of energy. Due to this observation, lab [Redacted] has reached a unified conclusion that SCP-XXXX allows energy to pass through its entity that would cause an excess of introduced energy and retains energy in the event of a lack of introduced energy. The mechanisms for this anomalous property are not understood or testable at this time.

Durability Testing: Immediately following Heat Testing, SCP-XXXX was then introduced to a series of durability tests. Durability testing was requested by lab [redacted] after close inspection of SCP-XXXX when scientists of the lab [redacted] failed to notice any changes in the material regardless of the introduction of large amounts of heat energy and subsequently pressure.

SCP-XXXX was affixed to [Redacted] that held SCP-XXXX in position as it was then moved across the surface of a 30 X 30 X 30 cm block of various materials. Numerous tests continued with the following data.

Material Dimensions Effect
Copper 30 X 30 X 30 cm No Effect
Stainless Steel Alloy 30 X 30 X 30 cm No Effect
Titanium Alloy 30 X 30 X 30 cm No Effect
Diamond 30 X 30 X 30 cm No Effect

SCP-XXXX has not experienced any change after the scraping tests of any kind. Observing SCP-XXXX's surface using an advanced SCP Foundation electron microscope before and after the scraping tests has confirmed SCP-XXXX's lack of change even at the structure of the atomic level.

SCP-XXXX underwent pressure testing using several hydraulic presses of varying design. Each Hydraulic press at its maximum pressure capacity failed to have any effect on SCP-XXXX and left minor indentations in the equipment in the shape of SCP-XXXX.

Composition Testing: No testing of composition can be accomplished of SCP-XXXX through the use of Mass Spectrometry due to the inability of lab [Redacted] to obtain a sample of SCP-XXXX that it can vaporize for testing.

X-Ray Diffraction would be the recommended testing procedure to learn more about SCP-XXXX's composition of material; however, lab [redacted] has reached the end of its testing capabilities due to incident [Redacted] relative to SCP-[redacted]

Addendum: Material testing of SCP-XXXX-1: SCP-XXXX-1 appears to have absolutely no anomalous properties and its manufacturing appears to have originated from a Chinese factory located at [Redacted] that manufactures similar ring boxes of varying shapes and designs. Given its close proximity to and its prolonged levels of exposure to SCP-XXXX, SCP-XXXX-1 will remain to be the carrying case ring box of SCP-XXXX for the foreseeable future.

Addendum: Failure of Anomalous Activity: Approximately 23 D-class have been exposed to SCP-XXXX. All exposed D-class have shown no changes or having been affected by SCP-XXXX despite having the following backgrounds seemingly related to the previous affected subjects:

  • 14 D-Class stating they were in a romantic relationship
  • 23 D-Class are within the age range of 20-26 years of age
  • 23 D-Class are male with a heterosexuality

There is yet to be a connection between SCP-XXXX and its affect on individuals.

Addendum: Removal of Lead Researcher Daniel Williams: Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams has been removed from his position and is to remain detained for the foreseeable future. After Assistant Researcher Dr. Sarah Krieg began to observe noticeable changes in mood and personality from Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams, the connection of sale and ownership has been made in regards to the progressively deteriorating symptoms of all male subjects. Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams is to be contained within a private D-Class holding cell until further accommodations can be made.

Addendum: Changes in Dr. Daniel Williams: Dr. Daniel Williams has begun to show both interesting and unexpected changes that have led to new hypothesis and theory as to the effects of SCP-XXXX on its male subjects. It is now believed that SCP-XXXX does not deteriorate the mentality of those exposed to its effects but instead proves to "enhance" them.

Emotional Change: Originally hypothesized that the effects of SCP-XXXX led subjects to commit suicide for seemingly unknown reasons other than exposure, it is now understood that SCP-XXXX- among its other anomalous properties- increases the empathetic tendencies of individuals.

Dr. Williams was strapped into [Redacted] and shown images over the course of 30 minutes that contained pictures of D-Class both happy and sad. We found that Dr. Williams had greater blood flow to areas of the brain involved with emotion, awareness and empathy — indicating physical evidence of the changes on Dr. Williams neurology from exposure to SCP-XXXX. This occurred regardless of whether Dr. Williams was looking at the sad or happy photos.

Increases in Intelligence & Creativity: Dr. Williams has also shown a radical increase in both his intellectual and creative capacities. After being given an Intellectual Quotient test, Dr. Williams was found to have scored incredibly high amongst categories of Memory, Word Comprehension, Logic, Numerical Sequencing, Perception, Visual Designs, Spatial Relations, and Creativity which earned him an approximate IQ of 160.

We had also provided Dr. Williams with an instrument he claims to have no prior experience playing or learning about, provided a recording, a composition and gave him the instructions of playing the piece. At his request, Dr. Williams was left alone to teach himself how to play said instrument which took him roughly 65 minutes.

(Recording below of a two-minute audio log of Dr. Williams playing the provided instrument after only one hour of his introduction to said instrument)

Addendum: Peak in Growth: Further tests of Dr. Williams has shown that his dramatic changes and increase in both intelligence and emotional capabilities have begun to slow. This slowing down of growth appears to be for more mechanical reasons than expected, seemingly reaching a limit in regards to neuroplasticity. This could be caused by genetic factors and it is theorized that Dr. Williams is merely reaching the peak of his mental capabilities, or perhaps the ability and limits of humanity, in general.

Addendum: The Termination of Dr. Daniel Williams: At approximately [redacted], Dr. Daniel Williams attempted an escape when en route to his private D-class holding cell following an interview between himself and Lead Researcher Dr. Sarah Krieg. As Dr. Daniel Williams was being escorted back to his containment cell by Officer [Redacted], Dr. Williams stole Officer [Redacted] standard issue handgun and fired a non-fatal wound in the shoulder of Officer [Redacted].

Soon thereafter, as Dr. Daniel Williams began to roam the Facility, he attempted to [Redacted] after [Redacted] only to [Redacted] at the amazement of all [Redacted]. only to be gunned down and terminated while standing next to SCP-049. It is the position of [Redacted] that Dr. Daniel Williams showed incredible hostility and instability, in effect, justifying immediate termination by MTF without investigation. Due to these actions, Dr. Daniel Williams was guilty of "Conspiracy To Cause Containment Breach" and, given the effects of SCP-XXXX, Dr. Daniel Williams death is ruled by [Readacted] as "Suicide by MTF".

There will be no investigations into the circumstances that took place leading up to the death of Lead Researcher Dr. Daniel Williams and SCP-XXXX is to be redirected for containment and placed at site [redacted] storage facility for the foreseeable future. No further testing of SCP-XXXX will be continued for the foreseeable future.
