Painted depictions of SCP XXXX-4 found in the antechamber of SCP XXXX

Item #: SCP XXXX
Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: Foundation personnel are to be posted at all SCP XXXX-1 locations. Archeological excavations conducted near SCP XXXX-1 locations are to be kept to a minimum by Foundation personnel embedded in various academic institutes. If such excavations cannot be stopped, Foundation personnel is to be embedded within the excavation and keep civilians away from SCP XXXX-1 instances. Web crawlers and personnel embedded in academic and archaeological institutes are to stay vigilant for any possible new instances of SCP XXXX-1. Should a new instance be discovered, similar containment procedures are to be established as soon as possible and civilian activity in the region is to be kept to a minimum.
Further exploration of SCP XXXX and the opening of SCP XXXX-2 instances must first be approved by the 05 Council.
All objects removed from SCP XXXX-2 instances must be fully catalogued before the end of the lunar month.

Description: SCP XXXX is an area believed to be extradimensional in origin accessed through numerous anomalous locations (designated SCP XXXX-1) throughout the world. At present, the following locations have been identified as SCP XXXX-1 instances:

  • A cave on the river Acheron, Greece
  • An underground river beneath the city of Coban, Guatemala
  • A hole beneath the Roman Forum in Rome, Italy
  • A well in the Fengdu Ghost City, in China
  • Oweynagat Cave, Ireland

Stepping through an SCP XXXX-1 instance results in transport to SCP XXXX. All SCP XXXX-1 instances thus far discovered lead to the same area of SCP XXXX. This region, hereafter referred to as ‘the antechamber’, is a rectangular room measuring approximately 300 square meters. The antechamber is lined with paintings and carvings of figures, generally humanoid, seemingly taken from a wide variety of cultures. On one end of the antechamber is an archway, where individuals entering through an SCP XXXX-1 instance arrive. Notably, leaving through the archway will return one to the SCP XXXX-1 instance they used to arrive. This will occur even if multiple people who used different SCP XXXX-1 instances to enter SCP XXXX walk through the archway simultaneously. Additionally, materials taken from within SCP XXXX seem to be unable to be removed from SCP XXXX. Thus, for the purposes of research and monitoring, the antechamber has been made the site of Research Outpost 39.

At the other end of the antechamber is the entrance to the main area of SCP XXXX, hereafter referred to as ‘the necropolis’. The necropolis consists of numerous rows of objects resembling large (10 meters by 20 meters by 10 meters) sarcophagi of varying composition, designated SCP XXXX-2. The necropolis is constantly lit by dim light, similar to that given off by a torch. No source of this light has yet been found. Thus far, each SCP XXXX-2 instance has been found accompanied by an inscription. The language of each inscription varies, though inscriptions of the same language are always found grouped together. As of ██/██/19██, the opening of SCP XXXX-2 instances has been approved.
When SCP XXXX-2 instances are under study, their lids are to be removed through the use of cranes or another non-damaging method, and must be returned to their place as soon as the study is concluded.

Within each SCP XXXX-2 instance has been discovered an anomalous entity, designated SCP XXXX-3. SCP XXXX-3 instances show no vital signs or movement and are presumed deceased. Most SCP XXXX-3 resemble the mummified remains of organic lifeforms. Attempts to genetically analyze the SCP XXXX-3 instances has thus far failed, as the instances seem to lack genetic material. For information on specific instances of SCP XXXX-3, see the attached research logs.
SCP XXXX-4 refers to a group of non-hostile anomalous entities inhabiting SCP XXXX. SCP XXXX-4 instances resemble small (usually less than half a meter tall) humanoids with entirely black exteriors and spindly limbs. At certain intervals, usually corresponding to a day of mourning or remembrance among an ancient culture, large numbers of SCP XXXX-4 instances will manifest, often carrying one or more objects between them. The instances will proceed through SCP XXXX until approaching an SCP XXXX-2 instance, where they will place the objects they carry and seem to perform a ceremony of some sort before departing and demanifesting. Efforts to capture images of SCP XXXX-4’s manifestation and demanifestation have thus far failed. SCP XXXX-4 will also attempt to repair any damages caused during excavations, and will manifest at the end of each lunar month and retrieve any items removed from the tombs.
