Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained within a standard 5m x 5m x 3m containment chamber. Chamber tiles are to have a clear 1m radius around SCP-XXXX visible. Chamber is to be monitored at all times. Any emission from SCP-XXXX whilst not in the presence of a member of staff is to be reported immediately to Dr. Stephens and site security is to be called.

Personnel testing SCP-XXXX must be rotated on a bi-weekly basis, with a staff member spending at least two months assigned to other projects after two weeks assigned to SCP-XXXX. Testing and experimentation on SCP-XXXX is suspended as per the results of Experiment XXXX/12. See Addendum XXXX/1 for details.¹

Description: SCP-XXXX is a cube with side length 50cm, comprised of a dark stone-metal alloy of unknown composition. In the centre of one face of the cube is a 10cm x 10cm x 40cm indentation, with a rested metal grate spanning the length of the opening. If a light is shone into the opening, small marks resembling hieroglyphs can be seen at the base of the cavity. For this reason, SCP-XXXX is considered manmade, though it is not yet clear by whom it was created.

If an adult human is within a 1 (one) metre radius of SCP-XXXX, the cube may 'activate' and emit a thick, black smoke that fills the immediate vicinity. If a human inhales this material, they will experience a vivid, daydream-like fantasy. The hallucination will differ from subject to subject, but all those affected by it have later noted that they experienced a vision of a something that they greatly desire.

Approximately 30 (thirty) seconds after a subject inhales the substance emitted from SCP-XXXX, an entity hereby referred to as SCP-XXXX-2 will manifest as part of the subject's hallucination. The subject perceives the smoke thickening and convening above the cube, into a vaguely humanoid shape. Any individual that has not inhaled the smoke will experience no change to their surroundings.

Descriptions pertaining to the form of SCP-XXXX-2 vary. All agree that it is humanoid, but some accounts describe it possessing as few as 0 (zero) limbs and as many as ██ (██████). All descriptions of its 'face' are congruent. It has no discernible features other than many triangles of light surrounding the centre of the being's 'head'. In the centre of this appendage is what appears to be a ██████. Subjects have recounted staring into this ██████ for extended periods of time. However, no more than 60 (sixty) seconds after encountering SCP-XXXX-2, subjects will fall unconscious.

Subjects' consciousness is restored approximately two to three hours after initial activation of SCP-XXXX. At this time, there have been no documented psychological effects on subjects affected by SCP-XXXX. Any personnel conducting further research into SCP-XXXX are required to have a full psychiatric evaluation after every test.

Transcript of Experiment Log XXXX/12

Lead Researcher: Dr. Evan Stephens
Acting Researcher: Dr. ███████ Montrose

Dr. Montrose had been overseeing testing on SCP-XXXX for the past four days. Tests on the previous three days exclusively involved D-Class personnel and Dr. Montrose had asked Dr. Stephens personally if she was permitted to perform tests herself. None of the D-Class used in previous testing had inquired about any possible motive for the appearance of XXXX-2. Dr. Montrose claimed that she would have more success in communicating with the entity as she would be less affected by it, due to her psychotraining.

Dr. Montrose stands at the door of the containment chamber. SCP-XXXX is standing on a pedestal at the far end of the room.

Dr. Stephens: Alright, the feed sees you ███████. Can you hear me?

Dr. Montrose: Yep, I hear you Evan. Are we good to start?

Dr. Stephens: Yes, you're good to go. Whenever you're ready, Doctor.

Dr. Montrose: Okay, I am Dr. ███████ Montrose, Experiment XXXX/12. Objective of experiment is to cause XXXX-2 to manifest, and try to communicate with it.

Dr. Montrose steps forward towards SCP-XXXX. She reaches the radius circle, and steps over the line.

Dr. Montrose: Okay… where are you?

Fifteen seconds pass. Dr. Montrose looks back at the containment chamber camera.

Dr. Montrose: Nothing is happening, Evan. Usually, it activates just by being close to it. I'm going to touch the cube.

Dr. Montrose pulls on a pair of disposable latex gloves and rests her hand on SCP-XXXX. As she does, the room is engulfed in thick, black smoke. Dr. Montrose is last seen jumping backwards before the containment chamber is filled with the material.

Dr. Stephens: Dr. Montrose?

Dr. Montrose: What the fuck? Why… Who is that? Oh. Oh my god.

Dr. Stephens: ███████, what do you see? Can you hear me?

There is a brief pause. Dr. Montrose is heard inhaling deeply.

Dr. Montrose: I can see her. It's █████. She's all grown up. Look how happy she is! Oh honey, I'm so proud of you. I always knew you'd make it as a doctor. Just like mum. God, look at me, I'm a mess. You're making me cry, █████. They're tears of happiness, I promise.

Dr. Stephens: Dr. Montrose, it's a hallucination. You are under the effects on SCP-XXXX. Try to regain your composure, remember we are here to experiment.

Dr. Montrose does not reply. She is heard quietly sobbing. The containment chamber is still filled with the material emitted from SCP-XXXX. By all accounts, Dr. Montrose should have suffocated.

Dr. Stephens: ███████. I need you to talk to me or I'm sending in security. Can you see XXXX-2? Can you describe it to me?

Dr. Montrose: You don't understand, Evan. She's so happy. She's so happy. She's so hap—

Dr. Stephens: ███████?

Dr. Montrose: She's gone. It's all fading. You're… you're it aren't you?

No change to the containment chamber is apparent.

Dr. Montrose: Why… why did you show me that? Why did you show me her? What do you want?

There is a pause. After approximately ten seconds, Dr. Montrose inhales sharply.

Dr. Montrose: And then… █████? She'll—?

Dr. Stephens: ███████, you're hallucinating! You're a professional, you have training for this!

Dr. Montrose: Your face. It's beautiful. So many lights… I'm sorry, Evan.

Dr. Montrose is heard to collapse. The smoke filling the containment chamber begins to dissipate. Dr. Montrose is seen unconscious with a weak smile on her face.

Dr. ██████: Good afternoon, Agent. Can you recount your name and Task Force identification please?

Agent ████████: Ellen ████████, MTF Eta-8-7.

Dr. ██████: Thank you. I understand this was your first assignment as a member of Eta-8.

Agent ████████: Yes, that's true. I was only told I'd been reassigned two days ago.

Dr. ██████: And you were immediately transported to █████, correct?

Agent ████████: Yes. It was the first time I've ever even left the country, and to go all that way…

Dr. ██████: Thank you. Please describe the anomalous object you found.

Agent ████████: We were sent out to Libya because we had heard a report of a small cult forming in the city. Usually we wouldn't be interested in something like this, but-

Dr. ██████: We are aware of your assignment. Please describe the anomalous object you found. Where was it located?

Agent ████████: Yes, sorry. It was in a cave, a couple of hours drive outside the city. It was so unassuming, someone had dug into the rock beneath the sand, seemingly at random. There were a few tents scattered about, abandoned, then this hole in the ground, covered by a manhole cover. I guess they'd stolen it from the city.

Dr. ██████: And the object was inside this cave?

Agent ████████: Yes. Standing on a tiny little pedestal of rock. The only light in the room was coming down from the hole that we'd left uncovered, so we turned our flashlights on and there it was. It was strange, to see such a perfect cube of metal in such a rough place. It was intriguing, to say the least.

Dr. ██████: And when did SCP-XXXX-2 manifest?

Agent ████████: We assumed that the cube was the anomalous object but we had no idea what it would do. After checking for possible cognito- or infohazards, the boss told us to pick it up and load it into the truck. Sooner we got it back to base, the better, he said. As we went to pick it up, a huge plume of smoke erupted from the top of the cube. We hadn't even fuckin' noticed the grate in the top. We tried to get back up the ladder to the surface but we'd already inhaled a tonne of the stuff.

Dr. ██████: And you saw hallucinations?

Agent ████████ pauses for several seconds. She stares at the table between her and Dr. ██████, seemingly lost in thought.

Dr. ██████: Agent ████████?

Agent ████████: Sorry. It's hard to get out of my head. I thought I was going to die when I inhaled that smoke. It was so thick, I thought it was only a matter of time before I choked to death. But I never stopped breathing. I looked around and couldn't see or hear my squadmates, the smoke was so thick, but I was breathing fine. And then, I saw her.

Dr. ██████: Her?

Agent ████████: My mother. She was working as a counsellor, helping kids with their problems. She had always wanted to do this; I'd heard her talking to dad about it hundreds of times, but she never thought she was up for the job. I was sitting in her office, seeing her entire career as a counsellor go by. Saw these kids, so broken and hopeless, taken under her wing, seeing her give them a reason to live again. I've never seen her so happy.

Dr. ██████: How long did the hallucination last?

Agent ████████: I don't know. Hours, days, I have no idea. It was like, I was seeing her entire life in fast forward, but I was taking it all in. When it finally passed, I felt like crying of joy.

Dr. ██████: And that was when you saw it?

Agent ████████'s face suddenly grows more sombre.

Agent ████████: Yes. A person, a thing, made out of the smoke, standing right there in front of me. It had arms of smoke reaching everywhere I could see, and on its head, a thousand blinking lights. All surrounding a…

Dr. ██████: A what?

Agent ████████: It was like, a ██████. I could see so deeply into it, until it felt like I was looking back at myself. Then I heard a voice in my head.

Dr. ██████: What did the voice say?

Agent ████████: Release me.

SCP-XXXX before cotainment.

Special Containment Procedures: As SCP-XXXX is located on a residential street in an urban area, complete containment is impossible without a large-scale evacuation of the surrounding area. As such, until more information can be gleaned as to the nature of SCP-XXXX, it shall remained cordoned off by Foundation personnel. Access to SCP-XXXX is forbidden by any Foundation personnel who are not currently assigned to inhabit the building. As per the results of Exploration Logs XXXX-1 and XXXX-2, at least two Foundation personnel must inhabit SCP-XXXX at all times.

Discovery: SCP-XXXX was initially reported to the Foundation on ██/██/20██ after its inhabitants (two parents in their late sixties) found malicious notes written in the handwriting of their youngest son in the basement bedroom. The son was living in ███████, Scotland at the time, and had moved out of the house eleven months prior. After a short police investigation, Foundation researchers were notified of SCP-XXXX and its inhabitants evacuated. A cover story of carbon monoxide poisoning leading to actions being forgotten was put in place. [delete this]

Description: SCP-XXXX is a two storey terraced house located on a residential street in ███████, West Sussex, England. The exterior exhibits no anomalous properties, and presents no danger to any person outside its walls. When viewing the interior through windows or other entrances, SCP-XXXX presents itself as non-anomalous.

The interior of SCP-XXXX is, at times, pristine, as if it had never been lived in. At others, it is in a state of such disrepair that, were it not anomalous, its structure would be liable to collapsing in on itself. SCP-XXXX has never been recorded changing its interior. The state of which it is in will only differ if all inhabitants are unconscious. Some time during their unconsciousness, any recording equipment will malfunction and will only reactivate once its inhabitants are conscious again. The interior will have changed during this time.

If occupied by one or more personnel, non-corporeal entity/entities that inhabit SCP-XXXX, hereby referred to as SCP-XXXX-A, begin to exhibit anomalous activity. Approximately 1-2 hours after a person or persons inhabit the house, messages may appear written on walls and notes may manifest themselves in uninhabited rooms. These messages always share the handwriting of the current inhabitants of SCP-XXXX, or the next of kin thereof.

The longer SCP-XXXX is occupied, the more personal and malicious the activity will become. Personnel have recorded the appearance of objects of sentimental importance, or letters written by deceased family members appearing within the walls of the house. Occasionally these messages are identical to real letters that inhabitants have received in their lifetime. Most often, letters are written in harsh scribbles and present offensive and personally affecting messages from loved ones, which can have a distressing effect on inhabitants. Whether this is the result of a memetic effect or simply the result of reading an upsetting message is unknown at this time.

At present, the true nature of SCP-XXXX-A is unknown. See Addendum XXXX-. What is apparent is that SCP-XXXX-A is sentient and has almost complete control over the interior of SCP-XXXX. See Exploration Logs for details.

Interview XXXX-1 was conducted with Mrs. █████ Bower, the inhabitant of SCP-XXXX who first recorded anomalous activity in the house.

Mrs. Bower sits opposite Dr. ██████. She is small in stature, age in her late sixties. She looks visibly nervous.

Dr. ██████: Good afternoon, Mrs. Bower. How are you today?

Mrs. Bower: I'm alright. I must say I wasn't expecting this kind of fuss made about my house.

Dr. ██████: Do not be alarmed, I am not here to interrogate you. I simply need you to answer my questions to the best of your ability. Can you do that?

Mrs. Bower exhales deeply.

Mrs. Bower: Yes, I can do that. I'm sorry, I've never been interviewed like this in my life.

Dr. ██████: I understand. Can you tell me when you first started to notice strange things occurring in your house?

Mrs. Bower: I think it was about three months ago. I went into [REDACTED]'s bedroom, to see if he'd left anything he might need for his new house, and saw a note on his desk.

Dr. ██████: [REDACTED] is your youngest son, correct?

Mrs. Bower: Yes. He moved out a few months ago.

Dr. ██████: Thank you. What did the note say?

Mrs. Bower: It was just one word: "why?". In all lower case.

Dr. ██████: This was strange to you?

Mrs. Bower: Well, yes. It was in his handwriting. I'm certain I'd never seen it before. I would have noticed it. Something felt strange about the way it was written from the moment I saw it. It wasn't a sad "why", it was an angry "why". I probably sound like a mad old woman.

Dr. ██████: You don't, Mr.s Bower, thank you. Was there anything else?

Mrs. Bower: Yes. Little things. Old shoes of his would be in different places in his room. I'd come down one day and his bed would be unmade. I thought my husband was having me on, so I asked him about it.

Dr. ██████: What did he say?

Mrs. Bower: He told me I was going mental, and that [REDACTED] probably wrote the note while he was living here, after a girlfriend left him or something. He ignored me and went to bed.

Dr. ██████: What happened next?

Mrs. Bower: The next morning he woke me up. I've never seen him like it before. His face was completely white. He'd found a note in the drawer of his bedside table. I don't know how long it had been there.

Dr. ██████: What was the note?

Mrs. Bower: It was similar to the one from before. One word. Scribbled. All lower case.

Dr. ██████: What did it say?

Mrs. Bower: "hate".

Dr. ██████: Was it in [REDACTED]'s handwriting?

Mrs. Bower: No. It was in his own.

Mr. Bower shifts in his seat.

Dr. ██████: Mr. Bower?

Mr. Bower: Hate. It said hate.

Dr. ██████: In your handwriting?

Mr. Bower: Yes. I never say that word. My parents always told me that to hate something means to wish death upon it. I don't wish death upon anything, I swear!

Dr. ██████: Can you tell me how long you have lived in that house?

Mr. Bower: █████ grew up there, her parents had lived there since it was built after the war. I moved in in the eighties after her parents passed away.

Dr. ██████: And you have never noticed anything strange there until now?

Mr. Bower: No. not at all.

Dr. ██████: Thank you, Mr. Bower.

Mrs. Bower and her husband were administered Class-B amnestics, relocated, and informed that they were merely victims of mild carbon monoxide poisoning. At this time, research into SCP-XXXX was handed to Site-74 for further in-depth investigation.
