Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to have its collar set to the "OFF" or "DEMO" position and be contained in a locked animal carrier of a suitable size for an adult golden retriever. The carrier and SCP-XXXX should be cleaned once every two weeks to prevent excessive buildup of dust and other natural residue. Due to the subject's anomolous properties, no forms of sustenance or maintenance are required outside of testing. All forms of testing with SCP-XXXX-1 set to the "NIGHTMARE" setting are prohibited without review by the Ethics Committee.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an adult male canine, specifically a golden retriever. Around the subject's neck is an undecorated collar (designated SCP-XXXX-1) made of plain leather which is fused to into its flesh. Testing on the leather has concluded it to be canine in origin and DNA analysis matches with that of SCP-XXXX itself. The front of the collar does not contain any tags or markings. On the rear of the collar is a small brass plate etched with the words "OFF", "DEMO", "EASY", "NORMAL", "HARD", and "NIGHTMARE" in that order, each indicating various settings. Attached to this plate is a brass dial that controls its current setting. The anomolous properties of the subject vary based on the setting that SCP-XXXX-1 is currently on.

OFF: SCP-XXXX spontaneously ceases all signs of life. The subject's corpse shows no indication of injury, decomposition or preservation, being kept completely intact indefinitely through anomolous means. No method tested outside of changing SCP-XXXX-1's setting has proven capable of reviving the subject.
Although incapable of natural bodily decay, the corpse may be aritifically damaged by any standard means, such as surgical incisions, dissolving via acid, incineration and etc..
Should the setting of SCP-XXXX-1 be changed, all parts of SCP-XXXX (regardless of their condition or location) will reassemble themselves at the location of the collar and form into an undamaged and living golden retriever.

DEMO: The subject appears and behaves as a normal and well-behaved dog, however it is rendered seemingly impervious to all forms of damage and has no basic needs such as food, water, or air. The subject will remain to appear completely content with its current situation no matter what physical or mental stress is applied including attempts at physical and verbal abuse.
In this mode SCP-XXXX is capable of following an undetermined quantity of pre-assigned commands. Several tested examples include the commands; sit, lie down, speak, shake, fetch and roll over. During testing, it has been determined that the subject also knows the command "play dead", however instead of playing dead all of its vital signs will spontaneously cease. There is no known method to reverse this outside of changing the settings on SCP-XXXX-1 to off and then back to demo. The subject has shown no capacity to learn new commands.
Any command that the subject recognizes will be followed without any hesitation regardless of the language or specific wording used. It appears to follow commands based on their intended meaning rather than the command itself.

EASY: The subject acquires basic needs and is capable of being harmed, but in both cases demonstrates an unusual resillence such as only requiring food and water once a day, rarely shows any need to defecate or urinate and requires an excessive amount of force to be applied to damage its body.
There appears to be no pre-assigned commands recognized by the subject, however it has displayed a remarkably rapid ability to learn new commands. Despite this perceived intelligence, it is incapable of learning any complex commands not teachable to any average non-anomolous domestic dog.

NORMAL: Quite simply, SCP-XXXX will be indistinguishable from a non-anomolous golden retriever in every way outside of the inclusion of SCP-XXXX-1.

HARD: SCP-XXXX becomes extremely sensitive to mental and physical stimuli, becoming easily frightened and injured. The subject will now require a minimum of twice the water and nutritional intake as it would in the "NORMAL" setting and will frequently need to urinate and defecate.

NGHTMARE: The subject is in a near constant state of distress and will be very easily injured if it is not handled with extreme care. To date, SCP-XXXX has not survived beyond a period of 32 minutes when in this setting, most often due to rapid dehydration and physical trauma.
Due to ethical concerns, testing on this setting is prohibited as per Special Containment Procedures.

If SCP-XXXX-1 is adjusted from a higher setting to a lower setting (such as from "HARD" to "NORMAL") no changes will occur and SCP-XXXX will remain on the higher setting. The only method to lower the setting is to adjust the dial to "OFF" and then to the desired setting, effectively "resetting" the subject. Although capable of being trained and demonstrating an average memory, resetting will cause the subject to consequently forget anything it has learned while it was active, suggesting that each time the dial is changed from the "OFF" position SCP-XXXX is reset to a default state.
Regardless of the setting of SCP-XXXX-1 no displays of anger or aggression have occurred in SCP-XXXX. Even when antagonized or through attempted training the only responses have been fear or indifference.
