Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Though all extant instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are currently thought to be contained, reputable news sources and hospital records across the Midwestern United States are to be monitored for reports of individuals willfully ingesting harmful materials. Any individual surviving such an event is to be monitored and, if determined to be an instance of SCP-XXXX-1, detained by MTF-Tau-25 ("The Biggest Losers").
Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are to be contained in standard humanoid containment chambers. Under no circumstances are instances to be provided with any material considered edible or potable, nor should any attempt be made to feed SCP-XXXX-1 intravenously. Personnel found to have violated this rule are to be detained and examined for possible infection by SCP-XXXX. Instead, instances are to be provided with "nourishment" according to Document-XXXX-DR, "Dietary Restrictions to be Imposed on SCP-XXXX-1." Any non-dietary request made by an instance is to be reviewed by the SCP-XXXX research project's current supervisor (Dr. Herman Keel as of this writing).
As symptoms of SCP-XXXX cause SCP-XXXX-1 considerable distress, each instance is to undergo monthly psychological evaluation and considered on a case-by-case basis for counseling and/or psychiatric treatment. Any request for termination or attempt to self-terminate automatically qualifies an instance for such treatment. If an instance's mental state has not markedly improved after 3 months of continuous treatment, requests for termination are to be reviewed by the Ethics Committee and granted or denied based on majority vote. Any instance of SCP-XXXX-1 previously diagnosed with one of the medical conditions outlined in Document-XXXX-M is to be automatically granted termination upon request.
Testing of SCP-XXXX is to be conducted only with express written approval from either the Ethics Committee or no fewer than 3 members of the O5 council. Any proposition will be automatically rejected unless the proposed research fulfills one of the following purposes:
- Determining a less harmful means by which to sustain SCP-XXXX-1
- Determining the vectors by which SCP-XXXX is transmitted
- Determining the means by which SCP-XXXX-1 instances heal internal damage sustained as a result of SCP-XXXX
As the transmission of SCP-XXXX is not fully understood at this time, contact with SCP-XXXX-1 is to be kept to a minimum except in circumstances outlined above.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous condition that prevents those afflicted (hereafter SCP-XXXX-1) from consuming anything that does not inflict severe pain and/or internal damage upon ingestion. This includes but is not limited to:
- Sharp objects such as broken glass or razor blades
- Toxic and/or corrosive chemicals
- Materials heated to temperatures sufficient to burn tissue
For a full list of approved materials, refer to Document-XXXX-DR.
Though instances of SCP-XXXX-1 report extreme pain and discomfort and exhibit symptoms consistent with severe damage to the mouth and esophagus during the consumption of such materials, no instance has thus far been found to ever have suffered an esophageal rupture of any kind as a result, even when such a rupture almost certainly should have occurred. Furthermore, upon making contact with the lower esophageal sphincter, any ingested material appears to vanish entirely and all internal damage inflicted by the process is rapidly healed between 30 seconds and 2 minutes after the material most recently consumed has demanifested.
Consumption of harmful materials is the only means by which SCP-XXXX-1 are capable of receiving sustenance. Biochemical analysis has shown that nutrients typically obtained from the digestion of edible/potable substances (including water) spontaneously appear in the bloodstream a number of days after the demanifestation of swallowed materials.1 This will be accompanied by the appearance of fecal matter in the lower large intestine and urine in the bladder, the mass of which, when combined with the total mass of nutrients obtained, is approximately equal to the mass of material originally ingested. Though no solid correlation has yet been found with regard to the specific nutrients obtained from any given material, the effective caloric value of a "meal" appears to be directly proportional to the amount of pain inflicted upon SCP-XXXX-1 during the consumption of said meal, and harmful liquids will generally provide instances with some amount of hydration.
Attempts to feed SCP-XXXX-1 without inflicting damage to the esophagus invariably fail. Ingested food or drink will be painfully regurgitated before reaching the stomach. Intravenous feeding results in symptoms similar to severe leukemia, and any nutrients thus obtained will be filtered from the blood via the kidneys and expelled from the body during urination. Individuals with medical conditions that necessitate intravenous feeding or otherwise render the individual incapable of utilizing his or her esophagus for the normal process of digestion are not immune to SCP-XXXX and are thus unable to survive for longer than 3 days after infection.
