View from western end of main street, SCP-5XXX-B
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-5XXX must be contained on site. The border of SCP-5XXX as determined by the Steyr-Fukuoka model [1] should be clearly marked by red warning lights spaced at intervals of 10m. A 5m tall electric fence should encompass SCP-5XXX at a radius of 12km from the center of SCP-5XXX. This fence should be marked with signage indicating the presence of landmines and warning that the area within is an active US military weapons testing facility.
Access inside the border of SCP-5XXX should be conducted via robotic means only. In the event that human presence is required, class D personnel may travel up to 5km into SCP-5XXX. Access beyond this point is strictly prohibited to all personnel.
- [MEASURES COMPLETED AS OF 08/13/1999, NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED] Sections of all roads passing into SCP-5XXX should be destroyed and evidence of their existence covered up between the perimeter of SCP-5XXX and their junction with the nearest connecting road. A section of CR-██ which passes through SCP-5XXX should be diverted onto nearby Hwy-███.
- [MEASURES COMPLETED AS OF 09/01/2012, NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED]
Satellite imagery of the region visible on Google Earth and other mapping applications should replaced with false terrain created to blend seamlessly with the surrounding area.
Description:
SCP-5XXX is a circular region of land in the United States approximately 17km in diameter. The region possesses a desert climate and consists of mostly flat topography. The ground is covered in the small shrubs and other plant life endemic to the larger region, though no wildlife has been observed.
Once any physical entity (organic or non-organic) travels sufficiently far into SCP-5XXX as to break line of sight to the surrounding topography over the horizon, it becomes impossible for that entity to leave SCP-5XXX by any known means. Any physical entity attempting to pass back out of SCP-5XXX in this manner will encounter SCP-5XXX-A. Electronic signals such as radio waves do not encounter SCP-5XXX-A and can pass in and out of SCP-5XXX as normal.
SCP-5XXX-A is an apparently infinite region of flat, featureless desert landscape extending to the horizon in all directions, incongruent with the well-mapped topography of the surrounding area. Robotic expeditions which have traveled into SCP-5XXX-A have discovered that, regardless of apparent distance traveled away from SCP-5XXX, SCP-5XXX will always be found located immediately over the horizon in the direction opposite of travel. This phenomenon is not currently well understood, but several hypotheses about “spatial looping” and an “omni-directional treadmill effect” have been put forward.
At the exact center of SCP-5XXX is a small town designated SCP-5XXX-B. It sits adjacent to a now-decommissioned section of CR-██, which passes through SCP-5XXX. SCP-5XXX-B is typical of many small towns in this part of the United States. It is approximately 1.6km by 0.9km in area and consists of a central plaza and main street surrounded by several blocks of houses. The dominant architectural style could broadly be described as "mid-20th century." The town's name is unknown, and despite extensive searching through public and private archives, no record of a town in this location has been discovered. Whether SCP-5XXX-B's position at the center of SCP-5XXX has any significance or whether it is simply a coincidence is not currently known.
Populating SCP-5XXX-B are many instances of SCP-5XXX-C. Each instance of SCP-5XXX-C appears to be a normal human being, primarily of Caucasian and Hispanic ethnicity with a few instances of American Indian ethnicity having been observed. The total number of these instances is unknown but rough estimates place the population between 1200-1500. They appear to have consistent and regular behavioral cycles, with individual instances observed traveling, going to work or school, shopping, and eating. Instances are invariably observed dressed in clothing styles commonly worn in the United States in the 1950s and 60s. Automobiles driven by instances of SCP-5XXX-C have also been identified as various models from this time period.
Addendum I: Historical Incidents
Below is a list of high profile disappearances and anomalous incidents reported in the area that occurred between the first probable case in 1967 when the Foundation cataloged SCP-5XXX. Please note that not all of these incidents have been definitively connected to SCP-5XXX, nor should this list be considered comprehensive.
(Note: in the case of disappearances, the dates listed below refer to the last time the missing person or persons are known to have been seen. In the case of other anomalous incidents, the dates refer to the date the anomaly was discovered or is said to have occurred).

Description: Anthony Aldridge (42) was last seen leaving a bar in ███████, ████, approximately 220km east from what is now classified as SCP-5XXX, driving a blue 1954 Chevrolet Bel-Air. He had announced his intention to travel to ██████, California to visit relatives, a journey that would have been most easily accomplished on Interstate 15. Mr. Aldridge failed to arrive at his destination. After several days with no contact, his family filed a missing persons report. Mr. Aldridge has not been seen or heard from since, nor have his remains or his vehicle been located.
It is speculated that Mr. Aldridge may have attempted to take a more direct westerly route on the rarely-traversed backroads that crisscross the region, an action which would not have been out of character according to his family. If this is the case, it is possible his route took him directly through SCP-5XXX, which would make him the first known victim of the phenomenon.
Additional Notes:
This case was not brought to the attention of the Foundation until after the more high profile disappearance of Thomas Becker, Andrea Dorn, Michael Adelaide, and Sally Hale (see Incident Report 1969.06.22).

Description: The partial remains of a Caucasian male in his late 20s or early 30s were discovered just outside the border of SCP-5XXX as determined by the Steyr-Fukuoka model [1]. The posterior half of the man's head and torso were missing, as if he had been cleaved along the coronal plane. The right heel and left wrist and hand were also missing. The amputations were clean and neat with light scorching visible on the skin. Internal organs and tissue were similarly affected, with their anterior portions still being present in the body cavity.
Additional Notes:
The man's identity has not been determined. Remains were transported to Site 11 for further study.

Description: Five friends - Thomas Becker (21), Andrea Dorn (19), Michael Adelaide (19), Sally Hale (20), and Irene Baker (21) - were traveling southbound on Interstate 15 in a blue 1962 Ford Fairlane.
According to the report given by Ms. Baker, the group had been drinking, and at around 9-9:30pm, decided to stop for gas and snacks at a small, remote service station. While at the station, either Ms. Dorn or Ms. Hale noticed what she described as a "distorted red light" in the distance to the north. In her report, Ms. Baker described "the sky as sort of warping into the light." A more clear description was not given. The group watched for approximately 30 seconds before the phenomenon vanished. Mr. Adelaide proposed investigating, and the other members of the group agreed, save for Ms. Baker who said she "had a really bad feeling about it, like really bad" and elected to stay behind at the station (Ms. Baker later stated in an interview that she had been in an argument with the rest of the group prior to stopping at the service station, a factor which may have also contributed to her decision to stay).
The other four members of the group were last seen driving north on a small unpaved road near the service station. Ms. Baker waited around till morning, by which time the group had not returned. The station attendant drove her to the police station in nearby ██████, where she attempted to file a missing persons report, however this was initially denied on the basis that the group had only been missing for a little over 12 hours at that point. Ms. Baker eventually returned home on a bus.
Several days later when no contact had been had with the group, their parents successfully filed a missing persons report. A large team consisting of local police departments and a contingent of the national guard searched the region where the group was seen heading for weeks, though no trace of the four missing persons or their vehicle was ever found. Four days after the search began, a pair of ██████ state sheriffs also disappeared (see Incident Report 5XXX-1969.06.26).
Additional Notes: Abandoned 1960's Ford Fairlane discovered in SCP-5XXX-A may belong to the missing group members. Identification inconclusive (see Exploration Log 5XXX-V).

Description: Roland Edwards (40) was flying his Cessna 172G approximately 12km from what is now classified as SCP-5XXX at an altitude of 11000 feet. Mr. Edwards stated in a report that around 1pm, the sky to the northwest appeared to "warp into itself." About ten seconds later Mr. Edwards claims to have observed a series of streaks of red light crisscrossing his field of view in "an almost spiral pattern." At 1:12pm he contacted ██████████████ Air Traffic Control. Below is the transcript of their conversation with added notes.

Edwards: █████████ Center, November Golf Zero Nine One Three, uh, I have a, uh, situation up here
ATC: November Golf Zero Nine One Three, you say you have a "situation?"
Edwards: Yeah, uh, I'm not, uh, really sure how to describe it
ATC: November Golf Zero Nine One Three, do you wish to declare an emergency?
Edwards: No, no, well, I don't know. I don't know what - I don't know what this is. It's like the whole sky is warping somehow. Off to my left
ATC: I'm sorry, you say the sky is "warping?"
Edwards: Yeah, there's that, they're almost like these streaks of red, almost like, light, I think. But not like anything I've seen.
*[Pause]*
ATC: Well November Golf Zero Nine One Three, I don't know what you're seeing up there, we don't have anything else on radar. Advise you -
Edwards: Oh god they're in front of me! There are lights everywhere!
*[Pause]*
Edwards: What the heck is that…?
*[Edwards's Cessna 172 is seen on radar to rapidly climb to 17000 feet (see additional notes), then abruptly descends to 9000 feet before disappearing from radar]*
ATC: Uh, November Golf Zero Nine One Three, please respond
*[Pause]*
ATC: Say again, November Golf Zero Nine One Three, please respond
ATC: *Muffled* Oh goddammit… Mikey, get Tom on the line, tell him we might have a crashed Cessna
Mr. Edwards's plane was suddenly observed to ascend and then descend rapidly before radar and radio contact was lost. According to the report later given by Mr. Edwards, several minutes later he found the aircraft flying straight and level at his original altitude of 11000 feet with no recollection of what happened after first observing the red lights. He diverted to nearby ██████ █████████ Airport where he landed safely.
Upon inspection, minor damage was discovered to the aircraft's landing flaps and elevators. The underside of the wings and fuselage were discovered to be sticky, as if the paint had partially melted. Edwards was given a psychiatric evaluation and found to be fit to continue flying, although he only made a few more flights following this incident.
Mr. Edwards's mental health degraded in the following years and he committed suicide by gunshot in November of 1983. Whether this had any relation to the 1974 incident is not known.
Additional Notes: 17000 feet is well above the service ceiling of a Cessna 172G under normal atmospheric conditions

Means: Robotic (Nomad I)
Outcome: Successful
Date: April 29-30, 1998
Distance Traversed: 22km
Description: Nomad I entered SCP-5XXX at 7:14am on April 29 and passed over the horizon at 8:05am. It reached SCP-5XXX-B at 10:26am. It passed around the perimeter of the town twice, observing buildings and occasional instances of SCP-5XXX-C for roughly four hours before entering the town on main street from the south end just before 2:30pm.
Instances of SCP-5XXX-C were evidently aware of Nomad I's presence, as on several occasions the drivers of vehicles slowed to avoid colliding with or passed around the relatively slow rover. However no instances appeared to consider Nomad I's presence abnormal or alarming in any way, and largely ignored it. Nomad I spent the night in the town square, with most of the overnight activity occurring at a small bar illuminated by neon signage. Instances of SCP-5XXX-C were observed behaving normally given the setting, with several instances appearing to be various levels of intoxicated. Activity died down around 2am and began to resume around 5am as the town's population began their daily routine. It was at this point where several of the same instances of SCP-5XXX-C from the previous afternoon were observed traveling to work, demonstrating that instances are evidently persistent.
Nomad I spent the rest of the morning exploring various side streets observing mostly residential structures (many of which appeared abandoned). Its battery began to run low around 11am and contact with the rover was lost just before noon.
