zechstyr - Sugar Obelisk

Item #: SCP-###

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-#### is to be held within a purpose-built triple-layered vacuum container. This container is to be held in one of two connected clean rooms. The building should be negatively pressurized at all times.

obelisk -> crystal point?

SCP-#### should be observed once every 2 days via D-class personnel wearing hazmat suits with face masks rated at HEPA 99.99% efficiency. Upon evidence that SCP### has grown beyond the marks on the innermost jar's exterior, they should be instructed to break the seals and extract SCP-####. The diamond abrasive belt sander in the nearby clean room will suffice to pare off additional growth.

Anyone who comes into contact with dust from SCP-#### must undergo lengthy physical 'disinfection' procedures. They are then quarantined for three days. Anyone who consumes dust or particles from SCP-#### or fail quarantine are to be immediately placed in a sealed room and executed via asphyxiation. Their bodies are to be immediately incinerated at Waypoint-95 Station until only the ashes remain.

Dust, large particles and fragments, facility filters, hazmat suits, and ashes of infected personnel are to be mixed with molten titanium, formed into ingots, and lowered into the Marianas Trench.

Any personnel who manage to smell SCP-#### and avoid infection should be immediately reassigned to another project.

Description: SCP-#### is a translucent black crystal of an unknown material in the shape of an obelisk, 3.5 cm in length and 1.5 cm in height. The obelisk is cool and smooth to the touch. It ranks a 9.7 on the Mohs scale and has a compressive strength of more than 1.1 GPa. Upon successful compression, SCP-#### violently fractures into hundreds of pieces and releases a cloud of dust. SCP-#### is insoluble. The crystal melts at 1700°C.

Any being with a sense of smell or taste perceives SCP-#### as delicious, but is usually unable to consume the obelisk without swallowing it whole. Upon any sort of oral ingestion the animal is addicted to the taste of SCP-#### and will continue to try to ingest SCP-####. Given the hardness of SCP-####, they usually resort to licking the crystal or swallowing it whole, at which point they are termed SCP-####-1.

Ingestion of SCP-#### infects the SCP-####-1 with SCP-####-2. SCP-####-2 rapidly subverts SCP-####-1's organs, rapidly converting their cells into "factories" which create small crystals within SCP-####-1's body. These small crystals coalesce into a single obelisk of uniform length and width matching SCP-####. This crystal will then erupt out of the subject's soft tissue and is considered a new instance of SCP-####. In most cases the new crystal erupts from SCP-####-1's eye, though it has been observed erupting from the mouth, anus, and nose. Despite this method of reproduction no form of transmission within the body has been found- SCP-####-2 acts similar to a prion, but no causative agents have been isolated. If swallowed, SCP-#### remains intact within SCP-####-1's digestive system.

Humans infected with SCP-####-2 show signs of infection within two to three days and can incubate a obelisk within five. Symptoms of SCP-####-2 include bloody diarrhea, vomiting, a single red eye, and exudation of sweet odors. SCP-####-2 is invariably fatal due to general organ failure and exsanguination. Crystal eruption occurs within four hours of death on average; an outlier of twelve hours has been observed.

SCP-#### also exhibits regular and regenerative growth outside of animal hosts. SCP-### grows at an average rate of 0.5 mm/week, usually only adding length instead of width. When it grows in width, it may splinter and release fine particles of itself. There seems to be no limit to maximum length outside of a host. Sudden anomalous growth has been observed. The largest growth spurt recorded doubled the crystal's size in under thirteen seconds.

When scratched or broken a crystal of SCP-#### will reform into an identical recreation of the initial obelisk over the course of several days. Fragments of SCP-#### will form individual crystal points at a growth rate of 1 mm/week until they reach the standard recorded size.

Six other instances of SCP-#### have been found throughout the world, including a crystal in the corpse of a ████ whale found off the coast of ██████. Given the self-replicating nature of SCP-####, all other instances of SCP-#### have been declared superfluous by Dr. Kravitz and should be neutralized via titanium smelting.

ADDENDUM 1:—-Rewrite as incident log
D-2190 was on assignment to pare down SCP-####. A quantity of the crystal was in D-2190's possession upon leaving the containment chamber. The quantity was discovered to have been mixed with ███████ and inhaled nasally. SCP-####-1 showed signs of SCP-####-2 within 12 hours.
SCP-####-1 was placed under experimental medical observation due to the accelerated progression of SCP-####-2. Eruption occurred 46 hours after ingestion but before the death of SCP-####-1. SCP-####-1 showed no possibility of recovering from SCP-####-2 and was was terminated. The instance of SCP-#### was disposed of as per standard procedure.

ADDENDUM 2:—-Rewrite as incident log
D-3228 was handling SCP-#### when it exhibited abrupt anomalous growth, growing 2 cm in length, 0.5 cm in width, and splintering into several pieces. One piece pierced D-3228's thumb. D-3228 exhibited symptoms of SCP-####-1 during quarantine and was duly terminated.

ADDENDUM 3:—-Memo from Dr. Basil to Dr. Kravitz,
The procedure of limiting obelisk growth by sanding SCP-#### down was called into question by Dr. Basil. Dr. Kravitz has assured the Foundation that this was the best possible way to both preserve an instance of SCP-#### while minimizing danger from explosive compression.

ADDENDUM 4:-Incident report
A remotely operated submarine was assigned by Dr. Kravitz to monitor the titanium ingots. ███ ingots were missing, ███ appeared stable, and one showed evidence of crystal growth on the outside of the ingot. This ingot was removed from the seafloor and the growth tested on D-class personnel, with predictable results. Dr. Kravitz hypothesizes that molecules of SCP-#### are fundamentally indestructible, even if the crystal structure is not. -
Routine, remove speculation

ADDENDUM 5:
Dr. Innes suggests testing of SCP-#### as a lure for other SCPs, and will compile a list of targets after preliminary approval from Dr. Kravitz.
