SCP-XXXX No You Can't go back to Constantinople
Item: SCP-XXXX
Depiction of Varagian Guard in Chronicle of John Skylitzes. Seen in Backround.
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a standard humanoid containment cell at Site 17. SCP-XXXX is to remain ignorant of the current date. All materials and furnishings provided to SCP-XXXX must be consistent with those accessible to a 15th century Byzantine nobleman. All interviews are to be conducted in Medieval Greek; interviewers are to wear period-appropriate clothing. SCP-XXXX is not permitted to remove SCP-XXXX-1. Additional recreational materials may be provided on request once reviewed by a staff historian specializing in 15th century Byzantium.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a human male (approx. 1.8m) in height and approximately thirty-two years of age. SCP-XXXX claims to have been born in 1421 and it was engaged in the siege of Constantinople (circa 1453) when its anomaly manifested during a bombardment by Ottoman Turkish forces. SCP-XXXX states that the anomaly manifested due to a projectile fired from the Orban Bombard. SCP-XXXX wears armor in the style of the Varangian Guard (the official bodyguard of the Byzantine Emperor) This armor designated SCP-XXXX-1.
When not in contact with SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX's skin will excrete a black viscous substance. Once the excreted substance exceeds half of SCP-XXXX's mass, it will ignite and combust. This occurs regardless of the temperature or availability of oxygen. If SCP-XXXX-1 is returned before ignition it will absorb the material. If SCP-XXXX-1 is returned to SCP-XXXX after ignition the material's combustion will accelerate. Although this combustion causes SCP-XXXX severe pain, it inflicts no visible damage.
If a human touches SCP-XXXX without SCP-XXXX-1 the materials effect will spreading across the subject's body in all cases burning them to death. If the subject is Eastern Orthodox the subject will not be injured by the fire. Wearing SCP-XXXX-1 has no effect on exposed individuals regardless of their religious creed.
SCP-XXXX heals from any wound sustained. If the damage would be fatal to a normal human SCP-XXXX will heal in a time proportional to the level of damaged received. SCP-XXXX-1 shows similar qualities with dents and scratches being repaired in a time relative to the damage. SCP-XXXX does not require food or water but expresses enjoyment of the activity.
SCP-XXXX exhibits extreme emotional distress when recalling the fall of the of Constantinople in addition to psychosis attributed to isolation within the caves it was recovered from. It is aware of its immortality, but due to SCP-XXXX's fragile mental state it is recommended that all interaction with modernity be limited to a minimum until it is stable.
Discovered in [REDACTED] Cave in Istanbul, Turkey SCP-XXXX was contained by resident Foundation personnel investigating rumors of a mad man hiding in the tunnels near the ancient Theodosian sea walls. SCP-XXXX was subdued and transported to Site-17.

Interviewed: SCP-XXXX
Interviewer: Dr. Wakefield
Dr.Wakefield: Good morning Constantine.
SCP-XXXX: Good morning doctor, what are you here for?
Dr.Wakefield: Just to ask you some more questions about the siege if that's alright?
[SCP-XXXX shuffles in it's chair]
Dr.Wakefield: Constantine?
SCP-XXXX: Fine.
Dr.Wakefield: Then we'll begin. Take as much time as you need. Describe the best you can the events of the siege.
SCP-XXXX During the first day of fighting the Emperor Constantine XI stationed us to guard the gates. The fighting had not begun in earnest yet but the barbarian leader had ordered a bombardment of walls. One in a long line of novelties he and his predecessors had used to destroy our great walls. The attack lasted through the day but the fire did little more to the walls then break the outer bricks.
Dr.Wakefield: So no damage was done to the city.
SCP-XXXX: None at the time. The second day the barbarian ordered his horde across the Hellespont and surrounded the city on its western side and continued with his bombardment. This began a siege that would last months. The ending of the siege was clear but we would not give the heart of Rome so easily.
Dr.Wakefield: What caused the fall of the city?
SCP-XXXX: Betrayal. A traitorous snake Orban built a massive cannon for the barbarian use against us. It was to fire a ungodly relic; something the barbarian had found in the mountains north of his homeland and required a special cannon for its use against us in an effort obliterate our walls. The Barbarian had sent us letters threatening its power and demanding our capitulation. That is General Manuel sent word to the emperor that the Orban cannon had be sighted across the Hellespont and sent us to guard the walls with a contingent of Venetians. That is when they fired on us.
Dr.Wakefield: You agreed to discuss the anomaly earlier Constantine. We have to know what you saw.
SCP-XXXX: I spoke of the darkness's powers not its creation. What need do you have to recreate such abominations.
Dr.Wakefield: We don't want to recreate, it we only want to understand it. If you can tell us how this happened to you we can stop it from happening to anyone else; you must understand our mission is the same as yours.
SCP-XXXX: You cannot understand the depths that unholy fool saught in it's creation. Promises from your kind mean nothing to me.
Dr.Wakefield: Then this interview is over SCP-XXXX.

Dr.Wakefield: Have you reconsidered your stance Constantine?
SCP-XXXX: No I haven't but I cannot do my duty if I am trapped here. So telling you is the only thing I have left to me.
Dr.Wakefield: Then please allow us to carry out your duty Constantine.
SCP-XXXX: Flattery is useless but it's of no matter now. When the blackened thing struck the wall the earth itself heaved. It had hit the wall under our station and tore the ramparts like they were a glass. Then I felt the ground beneath my feet shatter as the hellfire flowed up my body. My Venetian comrades fell in with me and I felt something pierce my back as I landed on the rubble. A dark shard had pierced me and well did realize what it was then I it was a piece of the relic that had imparted some of its evil inside me. I righted myself and saw around me the fate of the Venetians, they, oh God they crackled and split like pigs. It seemed as if the stone around me bled and I felt the pain of all of them welling with in me- they were afraid and-
[mumbled sobbing is heard]
Dr.Wakefield: Its fine if you can't continue we can always-
SCP-XXXX: No. I can continue. Above me, [Clearing throat] Above me the walls had, had rotted away dark fissures had rippled into the walls and burst onto the causeway. the men that hadn't fallen were impaled having their veins eaten into by that cancer. I felt my legs weaken and collapsed where I stood. During my disillusion my fellow Varagians brought me back from the wall and had the relic torn out of me as it had fused itself to my flesh. I, I thought I could hear them then, screaming.
[SCP-XXXX becomes unresponsive and cannot speak further]
Dr.Wakefield: That is all for today Constantine thank you for you cooperation.

Dr.Wakefield: Hello Constantine. Have you adjusted to your accommodations?
SCP-XXXX: Somewhat, accommodations is a charitable language
Dr.Wakefield: So do you lack a reason to exist then?
SCP-XXXX: Perhaps?
Dr.Wakefield: How are you so certain that that power is destroyed?
SCP-XXXX: If the barbarian had been able to send more of that dark magic to us I don't think that he would have afforded us that mercy. When I was sent back to fight my damages healing I witnesses the consequences God had wrought on their sin; the cannon stood cracked and surrounded by death. The horde of the enemy never returning to the hill it was stood on. The same rot that had woven itself into the walls of Theodosius had consumed the hill itself; a mass of cancer on the land men trapped on hand and knee fused to darkness. Had they been the creators of such a thing I doubt they would allow it to ravage the portion of the horde the Barbarian found most important.
**Dr.Wakefield: Well then if I may I would like to ask you to remember your last interview. Near the end you refer to hearing "them". Could you tell me who or what "them" are?
SCP-XXXX: In all truth could not tell you. It felt, leviathan. Like those lost on the walls or in the city or even the empire. Like a folding of the soul of mankind into itself. I felt it, saw it, but I lack the words to describe it. I'm glad to say it left me once the shard was fully wrenched from my side, though clearly some part of it still remains.
Dr.Wakefield: Did you ever feel this presence again?
SCP-XXXX: Only fleeting senses of it. In the blackness of my entombment as my eyes met the same darkness as they had seen in my sleep, it would always enter my mind.
Dr.Wakefield: Interesting, You said you had a children; would you like to discuss them?
SCP-XXXX: No.
Addendum XXXX-2: SCP-XXXX's regular instances of unresponsiveness are not related to its anomaly and may represent a regression into the state it experienced while being inside the cave. All attempts to interact with SCP-XXXX during this state have failed and all interviews are to concluded and their contents to be given to the designated psychologist.
Addendum XXXX-3: Due to SCP-XXXX reference to more entities in REDACTED] Cave it is recommended that further exploration by Foundation task forces take place to confirm or deny their existence.
