Item #: SCP-4877
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: As SCP-4877 is considered Safe, containment efforts are primarily dedicated to preventing public discovery of SCP-4877-1 under the pretense of archeological work. As of 12/09/18, exploration into SCP-4877 via SCP-4877-1 is permitted following Level 3/4877 approval.
Testing with D-class has shown that prolonged exposure to the anomaly causes psychological symptoms similar to those of sensory deprivation. As such, no expedition more than three (3) hours long is permitted for Foundation personnel.
Description: SCP-4877 is an extradimensional area in which perspective is absent. This creates an effect resembling engineering drawings. Notably, the horizon is not seen unless one is eye level with the ground. Objects also appear the same size regardless of their distance, necessitating laser rangefinders to determine proximity. Due to this, subjects experience the visual illusion that objects increase in size with distance.
The area is assumed to be infinite due to rangefinders not receiving any returns. Furthermore, the space is lit uniformly, with a dull blue-white glow visible in all directions.
The bidirectional portal to SCP-4877, the area under an arch located in east Rome, Italy, is designated SCP-4877-1. Recovered documents (see Addendum 4877-1) indicate the possibility of more such portals existing.
Exploration thus far has found various partially constructed devices close to the portal dating to 3 BCE, some anomalous. As such, it is possible that the anomaly was used similarly to modern computer aided design (CAD) software; eliminating parallax error and permitting easier assembly of complex devices.
Addendum 4877-1: Recovered Documents
Documents with an unknown author were found within SCP-4877, largely illegible due to age. Relevant extracts are below, translated from Latin.
… talked with the Senator, and he is agreeable to constructing more Ways throughout the Empire. It would indeed be advantageous for our legions…
… not working as intended. The workmen are restless. They are unused to this place. It seems to require more…
… discontent. Disappointing as it is, I myself feel it encroaching on my sanity. Work has to stop…
It is probable that the project was abandoned by the designer(s) shortly after.
