Disguised as a high-energy physics research institution, Area-03 is the backbone of the Science Department, a shadow department dedicated to reforming the Foundation's modus operandi toward vehement technocracy.

Overview

Area-03 is currently the largest research-oriented facility in the mainland United States disguised as a physics research institution combined with a private-owned spacecraft firm. Located near the western coast and hiding deep within the hilly area of Santa Ynez Mtns, CA, it is famous for owning the world's largest particle accelerator under it, its diameter exceeding 10 km.

Author's Comment: Obviously, St. Ynez is just a small hilly area in countryside south California, and I've never been there except virtually on my phone's Google Earth. But its environment, though, created a great contrast with the facility's marvellous, otherworldly existence, and serves well for this purpose due to its serenity. In the early versions of the draft of Parallelism - the story that enrooted the canon of Area-03, the relaxing and tranquil vibe of the countryside played a great role. I cherish the feeling that the awe of an unmet world could emerge from anywhere common and familiar.
The accelerator also marks the border of Area-03. Inside the circle, three interconnected wings are designated wings A, B, and C clockwise.

High-Energy Quantum Physics
One of the most prominent branches of research of this facility, however, is experimental physics. It is unknown that when the particle accelerator was approved to be constructed at this area, making it look like a rivalry with CERN which had to fall to the second place when it comes to the accelerator's diameter.

Cosmology & Astrophysics
Area-03 has a large rocket launching center above the ground, and perhaps due to aesthetical rather than engineering reasons, the launch tower stands exactly at the center of the circular particle collider. The tower and its ground base have undergone several reconstructions.

On-site Missions

Boundless is the main outer space mission project of Area-03. It launches probes and rockets usually farther than the solar asteroid belt, even outside of the solar system, to pursue opportunities to investigate lesser-known particles, dimensional wormholes, spatial and temporal ruptures, as well as other types of anomalies that rarely occur on Earth.
Directed by the astronomy division of Area-03, Boundless serves for both research and defense purposes. With the help of well-controlled spatial telekinetic and telecommunication anomalies, it's possible to open temporary, yet stable portals to send spacecraft farther than the reach of bare engine cruising speed.
Although most of the missions so far are remote-controlled, plans for crewed exploration is always on the schedule. The major reason is the future incentive of Boundless - to test out the homogeneity of our universe, i.e., to find out whether our known science principles are isotropic, even in the remote universe outskirts lightyears away from Earth, and
hence to discover possibilities to transgress rigid "science" and better explain the paranormal.

Area-03 serves as a crucial resource for the Foundation to carry out violent experiments on dangerous spatial, temporal, reality-warping, and other physics-affecting anomalies, as a part of an effort to rationalize and explain such anomalies to the highest extent possible.

Despite that most veteran researchers are totally aware of the restriction of modern science and the ultimate boundaries of human knowledge, it was repeatedly proven to be beneficial to push the boundary further into the unknown.
Manufacturing
Area-03 has an extensive storage of essential materials and equipment that could be deployed once in need of containment in the site's vicinity, or to temporarily provide housing for personnel during emergencies. The manufacture wing , and weapons are based on outcomes of anomaly-focused experiments.
