Item #: SCP-9967
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9967 is to be contained within a 10 m x 10 m x 10 m containment chamber at Site-██, constructed entirely of Quikrete™-brand concrete, per Material Integrity Report 9967-C. The statue must remain encased within an additional 2 m-thick concrete shell at all times.
Access to SCP-9967’s containment chamber requires written approval from at least one (1) Level 4 personnel. All surveillance equipment placed within the containment area must operate on closed analog circuits, as digital feeds experience frequent unexplained interference.
Any personnel assigned to SCP-9967 must undergo psychological evaluation every two (2) weeks. Audio monitoring of the chamber is prohibited following Incident 9967-A.
Description: SCP-9967 is a concrete statue of an eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), measuring approximately 0.45 meters in height and 0.30 meters in length. The statue’s composition is consistent with standard Quikrete™ concrete, with the exception of its eyes, which are composed of an unknown black material. Attempts to sample or damage this material have failed, even under extreme heat (>3000°C), pressure, and molecular abrasion.
The statue is sculpted in a standing position, clutching a concrete acorn molded seamlessly into its paws. Any attempt to remove the acorn results in severe structural degradation of surrounding matter rather than the statue itself.
When unobserved for extended periods (typically exceeding 10 minutes), SCP-9967 has been documented to change orientation or position within its containment chamber. These movements are never captured on video, though the statue’s location, posture, and orientation visibly differ between frames.
Personnel who remain in close proximity to SCP-9967 for longer than 30 minutes report the following symptoms:
- Auditory hallucinations resembling scratching, gnawing, or chittering.
- The persistent sensation of being watched.
- The appearance of small piles of crushed acorn shells near the containment door (chemical analysis reveals these shells are organic in nature, not concrete).
Addendum 9967-A: Discovery
SCP-9967 was recovered from a college campus in ███████, Pennsylvania, after multiple reports of “a squirrel statue that keeps moving closer to the academic center.” Local law enforcement dismissed the reports until one officer’s body camera footage showed the statue appearing in a different position between frames. Foundation agents embedded in local animal control intercepted the footage, administered Class-A amnestics, and retrieved SCP-9967.
The president of the college, [REDACTED], stated that he purchased the statue at a yard sale from an unidentified elderly man who described it as “the watcher of the yard.” The man has not been located.
Addendum 9967-B: Incident Report
Date: ██/██/20██
Summary: During a scheduled inspection, Dr. ████ ordered partial removal of SCP-9967’s outer casing to analyze its material composition. Within 3 minutes of exposure, all analog video equipment malfunctioned, and containment personnel reported intense scratching noises. When visual contact was reestablished, SCP-9967 had rotated 180 degrees and was facing the observation window. Dr. ████ later reported experiencing recurring dreams of “black eyes watching from the trees.”
Containment protocol revised. Further physical study of SCP-9967 is suspended indefinitely.
Integrity Report 9967-C
Filed by: Dr. Halvorsen, Materials Division
Date: ██/██/20██
Subject: SCP-9967 containment material analysis
Summary:
Following repeated containment breaches involving micro-fractures and unexplained displacement within SCP-9967’s previous holding chamber, a full analysis of material compatibility was conducted to determine optimal containment medium.
Testing Procedure:
A total of nine (9) concrete formulations were tested, including standard Portland cement mixtures, reinforced concrete with steel mesh, and five (5) proprietary blends. SCP-9967 was exposed to each under controlled conditions for 48 hours.
Results:
| Material Composition | Result Summary | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Portland mix | Micro-fractures observed after 22 hrs | Audible scratching intensified |
| Reinforced concrete (steel mesh) | Mesh distortion; localized corrosion | SCP-9967 rotated slightly toward mesh contact |
| Hydraulic cement | Rapid setting, partial containment | Unexplained expansion in wall cavities |
| Quicklime-based mortar | Chamber destabilized | Presence of fine gray dust in corners |
| Quikrete™ commercial concrete mix | Stable for 96+ hrs, zero displacement | No auditory anomalies recorded |
Conclusion:
Quikrete™ brand concrete exhibits anomalous resistance to SCP-9967’s displacement effects. Chemical analysis shows no significant deviation from standard concrete composition, yet SCP-9967 exhibits markedly reduced activity when encased within it. Cause remains unknown.
Recommendation:
Per Material Integrity Report 9967-C, containment chamber and inner shell are to be composed exclusively of Quikrete™-brand concrete. Any alternative materials must receive Level 4 approval.
“Either this thing respects brand loyalty, or there’s something in the Quikrete it recognizes. Don’t change it.”
— Dr. Halvorsen
Incident 9967-A
Date: ██/██/20██
Location: Site-██, Temporary Containment Wing
Involved Personnel: Dr. ████, Research Assistant P. Meyers, Technician L. Han
Summary: Unscheduled behavioral event during early observation phase.
Event Description:
At approximately 03:14 hours, analog surveillance within SCP-9967’s chamber recorded a brief loss of video feed lasting 47 seconds. Upon restoration, SCP-9967’s orientation had changed from facing the north wall to facing the observation window directly.
Research Assistant Meyers reported auditory disturbances (“scratching in the walls”) preceding the camera malfunction. Technician Han entered the observation area to inspect wiring; both Han and Dr. ████ reported “the sense of something shifting” despite no visible motion.
Within minutes, the temperature inside the chamber dropped to 12°C (a 9°C decrease). Han requested permission to exit, but before clearance could be granted, a loud impact was heard from inside the containment cube. The outer casing was inspected—no structural damage found.
After the incident, SCP-9967’s eyes exhibited a faint reflective sheen when viewed under low light, not previously recorded.
Aftermath:
Personnel involved displayed mild paranoia and sleep disturbances for several days following exposure.
Dr. ████ reported recurring dreams involving “black eyes” and “rustling leaves.”
Psychological evaluations indicate heightened anxiety in all involved staff.
Full isolation protocol enacted; all further analysis suspended.
Conclusion:
Incident 9967-A marks the first recorded instance of SCP-9967 demonstrating reactive or possibly sentient behavior toward observation. All non-essential visual monitoring was terminated following this event.
“It wanted to be seen. Then it didn’t. Whatever it is—it knows when you’re looking.”
— Dr. ████
Note from Dr. Halvorsen:
“We’ve confirmed it doesn’t like being looked at, but it doesn’t like being ignored either. Keep it sealed, keep it concrete, and for God’s sake—no one feed the squirrel.”
