Object Class: Thaumiel (formerly Safe, Euclid, and Keter)

Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-9988's containment chamber must remain free of reflective and/or recording devices and must be overseen by live MTF personnel at any given time.¹ Within its containment chamber, MTF members are required to maintain constant visual contact during duty and are prohibited from averting their gaze until they have fully exited the chamber.² Outside the chamber, patrolling personnel must maintain continuous observation of the sealed containment area. The exterior of the cell must be maintained at full operational capacity at all times.

Personnel assigned to SCP-9988 must rotate shifts no longer than five hours and are prohibited from interacting with the subject without approval of Level 4 personnel.³

SCP-9988 must never exit its chamber with the exception of when assigned to Thaumiel duties. Thaumiel duties include but are not limited to pacifying⁴ and redirecting⁵ highly aggressive anomalous subjects and assisting in warning about⁶ possible future containment breaches.

Necessities for any creature⁷ must be provided for SCP-9988.⁸ These necessities include raw, primal meat, fresh or salt water, warm⁹ and secluded¹⁰ resting areas, and enough space for it to be permitted to move around the chamber.¹¹ None of these basic needs are to be removed at any given time unless permitted by Level 4 and Level 5 personnel.

Noncompliance with the procedures above is to be reported immediately to Level 4 personnel and is punishable by reassignment and/or termination at the discretion of Level 5 personnel. All communication attempts must be documented and reviewed by Level 4 personnel.

Description:
SCP-9988 appears as a feminine, serpentine organism around 450 kilometers in length and 5 meters in diameter. Dermal plating covers its body that is capable of fracturing diamonds under high impact. Its scales display an overall pale grey with white coloration, and shifting cobalt-colored streaks that emit a soft luminescence in darkness. Its true eye color is unknown, however, they are recorded to be black in shadows and iridescent in the sun. Spines of unknown, hard matter row along its vertebral column to wrap around the end of its tail as a mode of offense and/or defense.

SCP-9988 exhibits a defined set of values. It generally seeks to assist those in pain, whether mental, physical, or both. It demonstrates an appreciation for transparency, empathy, intellect, and sentience in other beings. It is capable of harming others as a form of “corrective instruction”.¹²

The entity also exhibits forms of wrath and vengeance,¹³ and a strong disgust for those it deems "too upright"¹⁴ to be subject of the comfort it provides. It is, however, passive and benevolent despite this, usually wishing no harm upon any other lifeforms it encounters. It tends to employ persuasive techniques including but not limited to charm, trust, and hypnosis.¹⁵

SCP-9988 is confirmed to be sentient, demonstrating the capability of forming meaningful connections and deep emotional intelligence. Its mentality appears similar to that of a human's,¹⁶ however, it tends not to react to any emotional stimuli.¹⁷

SCP-9988's anomalous abilities are not fully understood. Documented observations suggest it can influence the perceptions, moods, and sense of reality of subjects by emitting “waves” of tranquility or distress into their minds. These waves appear to adjust dynamically according to the mental state of the target.¹⁸

Its regular domain is the sea, however, it will change¹⁹ into a tetrapod-like form at the will to walk on the land and/or fly in the sky.

Subjects interacting with SCP-9988 often express a feeling of attraction to its physique before it starts to emit low-pitched frequencies that draw said subject closer to it. Its complete physical prowess is not fully understood, however, it is documented to possess large amounts of speed and strength.

Subjects exposed to SCP-9988 may experience full alteration of emotional and cognitive states. While some interactions induce profound calm or bliss, others provoke extreme anxiety, fear, and/or psychological trauma. While humans are the most common targets due to their intelligence,²⁰ any other sentient beings can also be approached.²¹ The extent of SCP-9988's capabilities remain under investigation.

Addendum 9988-A: Recovery Log

Anomalous activity was detected around Site-██’s perimeter. MTF agents were deployed to investigate and neutralize the source. SCP-9988 emitted "waves of tranquility and calm", preventing agents from taking hostile action.

Capture was achieved because SCP-9988 voluntarily entered containment. The rationale behind its cooperation remains unknown. No casualties reported.

Addendum 9988-B: Testing Log
Test 01:
Subject: D-9342

Procedure: Instructed to physically subdue SCP-9988.
Result: Subject reported overwhelming feelings of bliss and lost awareness of orders within five minutes. Repeated reminders were ineffective.
Second D-Class replacement experienced identical effects. Testing was terminated due to deterioration of awareness among personnel.

SCP-9988 was subsequently classified as Euclid.²²

Test 02:
Subject: SCP-█████

Procedure: SCP-9988 introduced into containment chamber of SCP-█████.
Result: SCP-█████ initially displayed hostility, attempting direct aggression. SCP-9988 remained motionless, maintaining eye contact, and issued a silent command to cease.
Over approximately 5.6 minutes, SCP-█████ was rendered immobile before being followed by involuntary convulsions. Testing was terminated to prevent further escalations.

SCP-9988 was subsequently reclassified as Keter.²³

Test 03:
Subject: SCP-█████

Procedure: SCP-9988 tasked with pacifying SCP-█████.
Result: SCP-█████ initially resisted. SCP-9988 did not physically intervene; it merely “shushed” SCP-█████. Within five minutes, SCP-█████ exhibited signs of mania and briefly attacked SCP-9988 before returning to a dormant state.
Continued exposure caused repeated convulsions and behavioral alteration. SCP-9988 remained unharmed and compliant.

Keter classification retained; Thaumiel consideration postponed.²⁴

Test 04:
Subject: D-5565

Procedure: D-5565 instructed to initiate verbal communication with SCP-9988.
Result: SCP-9988 initially refused to respond. After repeated prompts, SCP-9988 stated: “Containement breche shal falle at Site-██²⁵.“
Approximately five hours later, a containment breach was confirmed at Site-██. Due to prior preparation, the incident was contained with minimal casualties.

Keter classification revoked; Thaumiel reclassification under review.²⁶

Addendum 9988-C: Interview Log
Interviewer: Dr. █████
Subject: SCP-9988

Dr. █████: ”Do you possess a name or a title of your own?“
SCP-9988: ”Mi name is Nameless. Mi title is that which the balancer biddeth to be yiven unto me²⁷.“
Dr. █████: “Why do you not maintain a fixed form?”
SCP-9988: ”I so chese to be what thy mind biddeth to see²⁸.“

Attempts to continue the interview were unsuccessful. SCP-9988 demonstrates limited cooperation in verbal communication.³¹

Addendum 9988-D: Notes
SCP-9988 exhibits highly unpredictable cognitohazardous effects. Exposure results in profound psychological alterations ranging from euphoria to distress, sometimes simultaneously. Subjects have reported heightened awareness, forced introspection, and occasional hallucinations interpreted as “lessons” delivered by SCP-9988. When interacting with other SCPs, SCP-9988's presence suggests the invocation of mania and/or seizure-like symptoms.

It mentions “balance of the body and mind”,³² but refuses to elaborate.

Continued study is recommended to determine potential containment improvements³³ and long-term cognitive effects on personnel.
