SCP-2823 as seen from under a microscope.
SCP-2823
Object Class: Keter
Disruption Class: Vlam
Risk Class: Danger
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-2823 is to be kept in a vacuum-sealed, cryogenic chamber. The chamber, nicknamed CVAM, is 3ft by 4ft by 5ft, and is made of tungsten. The chamber is to have a dry, inert, and argon sealed ampoule in the middle, and the inside covered in an insulative sealant. The chamber is to be kept at temperatures of -50C to prevent cell division. The chamber must be kept vacuum sealed to prevent airborne reactions with the Rubidium. The room containing the CVAM must be sterilized. The room is 20ft by 20ft by 30ft, and has a remote control arm on the ceiling. A 5ft by 20ft part of the room is used for observation. Below the arm is a hospital bed used for Class-D experimentation.
The CVAM chamber in which SCP-2823 is to be held.
Description:
SCP-2823, often dubbed "Larry" by staff personnel, is a singular cell (seemingly not an animal or plant cell) that undergoes mitosis every second. SCP-2823 was found to have traces of Rubidium inside the cytoplasm, causing violent and explosive reactions when put in contact of air. In the event of any change in temperature, SCP-2823 seems to adapt to the cold temperatures, and will continue mitosis. The temperature must be progressively lowered with each change in temperature due to an unknown mutation, caused by the rapid production of cells. The rapid mitosis causes necrosis to nearby lifeforms due to the cell using so much ATP. It also has a high mutation rate due to unstable genes, caused by rapid mitosis. The range of SCP-2823's effects is about 1-2 meters, hence the robotic arm. The human body mistakes the Rubidium ions in SCP-2823 for Potassium ions, and since potassium is responsible for nerves, muscle contractions, and more, Class-D have shown signs of seizures, confusion, muscle spasms, paralysis, organ failure, cardiac arrest, hallucinations, and loss of motor control.
Addendum 2823-1: Discovery
SCP-2823 was found on a coastal fishing village near Point Hope. it was spotted by a local, who reported it to the State Guard. The object soon hit local news outlets, and was picked up by the Foundation AI, labeling it a level 2 threat. Site-7 dispatches a Field Liaison Team, whom contacted MTF unit Beta-7. From there, it is held in a temporary location, a decommissioned NORAD base. From there it was promptly sent to Site-103, in ████████
The current holding site of SCP-2823.
Addendum 2823-2: Containment Breach at Temp. Holding Site
Date: ██████████, SCP-2823 is held at a temporary holding site in Anchorage, Alaska. The cooling unit had malfunctioned, causing SCP-2823 to adapt to the temperature. Normally, the chamber will alert all nearby staff of temperature changes, but the unit didn't. The cell adapted to the temperature without staff's knowledge, and mutated rapidly. By the end, the cooling unit had to be sold, and a new military grade one bought, with a max temperature of -240C. The temperature fluctuation somehow caused a small burst of air to go inside the chamber, causing the whole unit to chemically explode from the rubidium. 5 staff died from necrosis and deprivation of ATP, glucose and oxygen. The new chamber would be what staff now call, CVAM.
Notes:
Hi. This is my first time making an SCP, so if you have any ideas, please do tell, I would love to hear your feedback! I am new to this, but am not new to the SCP universe. Also, fun little fact, everything I said about the cell thing is true, with the exception of Rubidium being in a cell. If mitosis happened at such a high rate, you would experience necrosis, you would be hard of breathing and more. The Rubidium thing is true too.
