Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX, XXXX-1, and XXXX-2, are contained at Site-02 in a standard climate-controlled containment chamber. The room is constructed of reinforced concrete, with the walls and ceiling lined with lead to prevent any unauthorized viewing. Access to SCP-XXXX is restricted to Level 3 personnel or higher, and all interactions with the object must be documented and approved by the Site Director.

A bookshelf, two beds, a coffee table, a couch, and adequate lighting have been requested and fulfilled. Any requests concerning foods, drinks, entertainment media, and hygiene products made by XXXX-1 or -2 are to be accepted. Any abnormal requests are to be denied.

An armed guard must be present outside the entry to SCP-XXXX’s containment chamber along with surveillance cameras and motion detectors that are to be consistently monitored at all times. In the event of unauthorized access to SCP-XXXX, or unauthorized tampering with SCP-XXXX, Site-02 security is authorized to use lethal force. In the event of a breach or loss of control of the containment area, a failsafe protocol is to be enacted, whereby the immediate and simultaneous termination of all biological subjects1 is to be executed via the dispersion of nerve agent toxins within the containment chamber.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an ancient wooden chessboard of unknown origin, measuring 50cm x 50cm x 6cm, with a set of modern chess pieces2. The chessboard itself is intricately and faintly carved with various symbols and runes of unknown significance, and the pieces are finely crafted from dark, aged wood. The board and pieces are in a state of near-perfect preservation despite their age, which is estimated to be several millennia old.

SCP-XXXX's anomalous properties manifest when two individuals, hereafter referred to as SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2, engage in a game of chess on the board. They are two men ranging from ages sixty (60) to seventy (70) who are commonly described with canny characteristics and wearing formal attire. Besides playing with SCP-XXXX, most of their time is spent reading books and engaging in casual conversation about life outside of the Foundation.

The chess games played on SCP-XXXX follow conventional rules, with each instance switching colors3, but the outcome of each game appears to influence or directly cause real-world outside events. Once a game is over, the results of the game have a direct impact on geopolitical events, often leading to the start of wars, conflicts, and even peace negotiations. The chessboard seems to determine the outcomes of these events according to the movement of pieces with military movements. Historical records indicate that SCP-XXXX has been responsible for major shifts throughout history.

Efforts to destroy SCP-XXXX or intervene in the game have been unsuccessful, as any attempt to dismantle or damage the object results in immediate and severe consequences. In some cases, such actions have led to unanticipated military engagements, natural disasters, or other calamities (Incident XXXX-01). Notably, SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 appear to be immune to harm while playing on SCP-XXXX, and they continue to exist as long as the object is intact.

It is of utmost importance to contain and study the object to mitigate the potentially catastrophic consequences of its use. Research into its origins, purpose, and means of control is ongoing.

Historical Records

Summary: The following are a few notable historical events tied to the use of SCP-XXXX:

  • The War of the Sicilian Knights (12th Century): SCP-XXXX's first known appearance in historical records. The chess game played on SCP-XXXX influenced the conflicts in Sicily, leading to widespread bloodshed. It ended with a successful rebellion on the island of Sicily against the rule of the French-born King Charles I of Anjou.
  • Thirty Years' War / Treaty of Westphalia (17th Century): The Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War, was directly influenced by a game played on SCP-XXXX, leading to the establishment of modern international diplomacy. It also brought peace to the Holy Roman Empire, closing a calamitous period of European history that killed approximately eight million people.
  • World War I (20th Century): During this time, SCP-XXXX was contained by the Foundation. SCP-XXXX played a role in the events leading up to World War I, with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand being one of the first direct results of the chess game played on the board. Foundation staff observed the moves and therefore made a diagnosis that the placement of the pieces, as well as the pieces themselves, tied together with military movements and strategies.
  • World War II (20th Century):
  • Cuban Missile Crisis (20th Century) [Incident XXXX-01]:

Current Geopolitical Tensions: SCP-XXXX remains active today, with ongoing games shaping current geopolitical events, particularly in areas of global conflict and tension. The results of ongoing conflicts are always redacted for safety and continuity.
